Trespassers on the rooftops: a secret history of Mexico City's cultural revolutionaries (Dr Atl on the roof of former convent La Merced, with church cupulas in the background. Photograph: Instituto Nacional de Bellas Artes) In the 1920s, Mexico City’s roof spaces, or azoteas, became a laboratory for modernist creativity, offering a space where artists and thinkers could push the boundaries of culture and bridge the gaps in society, writes Valeria Luiselli

The Secrets Of Uber's Mysterious Surge Pricing Algorithm, Revealed Is the way Uber changes its prices fair? And, maybe more importantly, does it actually work? Researchers just reverse engineered the app to find the answers. Most people who use Uber know they may pay more for a ride on a rainy winter evening than on a sunny summer’s day. Uber’s use of dynamic surge pricing—its practice of charging more when demand for rides is higher than the supply of cars—is now famous (or infamous, if you are someone who paid hundreds of dollars for a New Year’s Eve lift.) Other industries, even Disney’s theme parks, are copying the model. And the entire selling point of would-be competitor ride hailing companies is that they’re surcharge-free.

5 Brilliant TED Talks That Will Boost Your Emotional Intelligence These talks will inspire you to think differently about yourself and others. Emotional intelligence is more than a hot topic or trending hashtag. The term describes an extremely important concept: a person's ability to recognize his or her own and other people's emotions, to understand the powerful effect of these emotions, and to use that information to guide thinking and behavior. This quality greatly enhances your efforts to achieve success--in many areas of life. So how do you develop emotional intelligence? As with any skill, you must study and practice. Here are 5 TED Talks that will help you increase self-awareness and start targeting areas for improvement.

Dorms for Grownups: A Solution for Lonely Millennials? In a new model of living, residents will have their own “microunits” built around a shared living space for cooking, eating and hanging out. This office looks like a pretty typical co-working space, what with the guy with a ponytail coding in one corner, the pile of bikes clustered in another, and the minimalist desks spread across a light-filled room. Troy Evans opened this space, CoWorks, in a downtown building here in February.

The rating game. How Uber and its peers turned us into horrible bosses ("CUSTOMERS EXPECT RITZ CARLTON SERVICE AT MCDONALD'S PRICES.") The on-demand economy has scrambled the roles of employer and employee in ways that courts and regulators are just beginning to parse. So far, the debate has focused on whether workers should be contractors or employees, a question sometimes distilled into an argument about who’s the boss: are workers their own bosses, as the companies often claim, or is the platform their boss, policing their work through algorithms and rules?

Russia and the Curse of Geography. Want to understand why Putin does what he does? Look at a map. Vladimir Putin says he is a religious man, a great supporter of the Russian Orthodox Church. If so, he may well go to bed each night, say his prayers, and ask God: “Why didn’t you put mountains in eastern Ukraine?”

Y Combinator, the X Factor of tech A tech talent-spotter has come to dominate Silicon Valley’s startup scene. IT SOUNDED like an oddball idea, but that is how many breakthroughs in Silicon Valley begin. In late 2008 three young men applied to Y Combinator (YC), a school for startups, looking for help with their tiny firm, AirBed & Breakfast, a website that helped people rent out inflatable mattresses in their living-rooms during conferences. Paul Graham, one of YC’s founders, did not think much of their idea, but liked their pluck. Strapped for cash, the three had sold novelty breakfast cereals during the presidential election (Obama O’s and Cap’n McCains) to earn enough money to keep their startup going. Mr Graham and his partners at YC helped them to refine their idea and meet early investors. Today Airbnb, as their firm is now known, rents out whole apartments in 190 countries and is one of the most talked-about startups, valued at $25.5 billion.

Why Virtual Classes Can Be Better Than Real Ones I teach one of the world’s most popular MOOCs (massive online open courses), “Learning How to Learn,” with neuroscientist Terrence J. Sejnowski, the Francis Crick Professor at the Salk Institute for Biological Studies. The course draws on neuroscience, cognitive psychology, and education to explain how our brains absorb and process information, so we can all be better students. Since it launched on the website Coursera in August of 2014, nearly 1 million students from over 200 countries have enrolled in our class. We’ve had cardiologists, engineers, lawyers, linguists, 12-year-olds, and war refugees in Sudan take the course. We get emails like this one that recently arrived: “I’ll keep it short. I’ve recently completed your MOOC and it has already changed my life in ways you cannot imagine. I just turned 29, am in the middle of a career change to computer science, and I’ve never been more excited to learn.”

Architects Say This Apartment Complex Is the Year's Best Building–Here's Why The Interlace is an apartment complex in Singapore designed by Ole Scheeren, a German architect who spent many years as a partner at OMA (where he masterminded Beijing’s CCTV building). Today at the World Architecture Festival, it was chosen as Building of the Year after two days of presentations from finalists vying for the award.

(con dedicatoria) The Ultimate Guide To Getting Published In A Literary Magazine In this essay, I will attempt to tell you everything I’ve learned about submitting and publishing in literary magazines. Here’s the first thing: When you publish a book of stories that were published in literary magazines, you have to pitch essays like this one. Here’s the second thing: “Write what you know” is horrible advice for fiction writing, but really good advice for essay-to-promote-a-book writing. And pretty much the only thing I know about is literary magazines.
