Throughout the centuries of academic and scientific advancement Acadamic Regalia was adopted as a symbol of distinction between the professor and lhe student, the cleriC and the Tayman, the man-of-letters and the common-man. The habit originated in Europe, and this particular mode of dress was chosen mainly for its functional necessity: it afforded the wearer some degree of protection against the hazards of unheated buildings during icy-winters. The gown, as with all forms of apparel, was unable to resist the progression of fashionable change, and developed in such a manner that in 1894 it was decided to attempt a universal standardisation. The College of the Bahamas has chosen its Academic Dress in conformation with this code:
Black gown to be worn buttoned with full-length sleeves to be square at the wrists,
Black cap with a coloured tassel indicating the Division of the discipline studied-
Applied Science - Orange Business Studies - Drab Education - Blue Humanities -White Natural Science -Golden-yellow Social Science -Crimson Technical Studies -Brown
Today, it is hoped, the Costume is worn not to identify the differences of ability in mankind, but to acclaim the opportunities pursued by the individual through personal endeavour and sacrifice. The Costume should be regarded also as a tribute to the many associates- parents, family, friends, local institutes and Government - who support and encourage the student's efforts.
