Welcome to the 8th BrasilCineIdentity is not frozen, it is constantly in progress! Consequently, one can conclude that Brazil’s identity is also developing and changing. The population, the main actor in this changing process, has gone through a long maturity process, and has gradually taken over the streets to express their opinions and discontent.

At the same time it can be noted that Brazil has been undergoing a rapid development, which enabled the country to reach macroeconomic balance and stable growth. These economic and structural changes are reflected not only in the people but also the most varied art forms, especially cinema. During the past years, filmmakers have increasingly portrayed Brazilian society and its everyday life, as an attempt to look for diffe-rent ways to address the many social problems the country still faces.

This documentary-like engagement conceived a new way to produce films in Brazil, through new stories, styles and views that bring people and cities together. This is why this year’s edition invites you to a journey where a reflection of how people handle life and how the urban modern Brazilian reshapes the self through the many changes is in focus.

Changes are not just a characteristic of Brazil alone. They can also be noticed in BrasilCine, which this year returns to Gothenburg where it first began. The very much dreamed of Little BrasilCine for children will also come to life for the very first time this year. All in all, BrasilCine continues to follow its main aim, which is to discover and highlight new talents, strengthening BrasilCine’s proposal of promoting Brazilian culture in Scandinavia.

Identitet är inte frusen, utan i ständig utveckling! Följaktligen kan man konstatera att Brasiliens identitet håller på att förändras. Förändringen drivs av befolkning som i en lång mognadsprocess gradvis har tagit plats på gatorna för att uttrycka sitt missnöje. Detta är tydligt!

Samtidigt lägger man märke till att Brasilien har genomgått en stark utveckling, vilket har möjliggjort att landet nått makroekonomisk balans och stabil tillväxt. De ekonomiska och strukturella förändringarna i landet har starkt påverkat dess befolkning som i sin tur gestaltar dessa förändringar i olika konstformer. De senaste åren har filmmakarna allt oftare avbildat det brasilianska samhället och dess vardag, på jakt efter ett annorlunda sätt att visa samhällsproblem.

Detta dokumentära engagemang skapade ett nytt sätt att producera filmer i Brasilien, genom nya berättel-ser, stilar och visioner som sätter människor och dess städer i fokus. Detta är anledningen till att BrasilCine i årets upplaga bjuder in dig till en resa genom landets förändringar, en reflektion om hur befolkningen hanterar situationen och om hur den moderna människan omskapar sig själv genom dessa förändringar.

Årets upplaga visar inte bara förändringar i Brasilien utan även i festiva-lens struktur som i år återvänder till Göteborg, inför Lilla BrasilCine på programmet och fortsätter att ge plats åt nya talanger, vilket förstärker BrasilCines roll som främjare av den brasilianska kulturen i Skandina-vien.

HöJdPunkterOmslagsillustratör till Brasilcines 8:e upplaga: Binho Barreto är en brasiliansk konstnär som arbetar med teckning, graffiti, installationer och tvärvetenskapliga projekt. Han är också frilansillustratör och lärare som genomför undersökningar inom digital teknik. Hans teckningar är djupt och starkt påverkade av det dagliga livet i städer. Hans verk har ställts ut över hela Brasilien och i andra länder såsom Norge, Frankrike och USA. Han har examen i konst och läser masterprogram i arkitektur och urbanism.

Cover illustrator for 8th edition of Brasilcine: Binho Barreto is a Brazilian visual artist who works with drawing, graffiti, installations and interdisciplinary projects. He is also a freelance illustrator and teacher carrying out researches in the field of digital technologies. His drawings are deeply and strongly influenced by the everyday urban life. His works have been exhibited all over Brazil and abroad, in places such as Norway, France and USA. He has a degree in arts and is currently taking his masters in Architecture and Urbanism.

möt andré novais & filmes de Plástico André Novais de Oliveira (1984), från Belo Horizonte, har examen i historia och Filmvetenskap. Han har regisserat många kortfilmer som deltagit i över 50 festivaler runt om i världen och vunnit över 20 priser i Brasilien och utomlands. Han producerade bl a Dona Sônia (officiellt urval i Rotterdam och Clermont-Fer-rand). Hans senaste film, Pouco mais de um mês, hade världspremiär vid Mostra de Cinema de Tiradentes 2013 och fick ett speciellt omnämnande i Cannes. Hans nästa projekt är hans första långfilm Ela volta na quinta. Tillsammans med sina partners Gabriel Martins & Maurilio Martins, grundade han produktionsbo-laget Filmes de Plástico baserat i Contagem (Brasilien) 2009. Filmes de Plástico har producerat kortfilmer och långfilmer, både fiktion och dokumentärer samt musikvideor, och söker alltid innovativa former av kreativitet. Meet André Novais & Filmes de PlásticoAndré Novais Oliveira (1984), from Belo Horizonte, has a degree in History and Film Studies. He has directed many shorts selected in over 50 festivals worldwide and winning over 20 awards in Brazil and abroad. He produced Dona Sônia (official selection in Rotterdam and Clermont-Ferrand) among others. His latest film, Pouco mais de um mês, had its world premiere at the Mostra de Cinema de Tiradentes in 2013 and received special mention in Cannes. His next project is the feature Ela volta na quinta. Together with partners Gabriel Martins & Maurílio Martins, he founded the production company Filmes de Plástico based in Contagem (Brazil) in 2009. Filmes de Plástico has produced shorts and features, both fiction and documentaries, as well as video-clips, always looking for innovative forms of creativity. Doctor K is an old and wise draftsman, who doesn’t know everything. He loves to create sceneries, characters and stories to demonstrate how to do a cartoon. To achieve that, he gets help from his own characters, besides some strange tools that will help him solve big mysteries about animated films.

Doktor K är en gammal och klok tecknare som inte vet allt. Han älskar att skapa landskap, karaktärer och berättelser som visar hur man gör en film. För att uppnå detta får han hjälp av sina egna karaktärer, och använder några konstiga verktyg som hjälper honom att lösa de stora mysterierna kring animera-de filmer.

Filmmaker and professor at one of Brazil’s biggest university, UNICAMP in São Paulo where he has worked for 22 years. Lazaretti is the founder of the Animation Film Association, which focuses on independent animation productions, which differ substantially from commercial productions.

A film funded by the public, from the Xingu region to the world. It is a gripping documentary that focuses on the struggle of indigenous peoples for land, respect and environmental preservation. The trigger was the government’s decision to deploy the Belo Monte dam, which will affect the way of life of indigenous communities who depend on the Xingu River. Thus, this documentary questions the model of development proposed for the Amazon.

Seven adolescents take on the mission of filming their family’s housemaids for one week and handing over the footage to the director to make a film. The images that confront us uncover the complex rela-tionship that exists between housemaids and their employers, a relationship that confuses intimacy and power in the workplace and provides us with an insight into the echoes of a colonial past that lingers in contemporary Brazil.

Sju ungdomar accepterar ett uppdrag: att filma sina hembiträden under en vecka för att sedan ge materi-alet till regissören för att skapa en film. Bilderna som konfronterar oss avslöjar den komplexa relationen mellan hembiträden och deras arbetsgivare. Det är en relation som blandar makt och intimitet på ar-betsplatsen. Den ger oss en inblick i resterna av det kolonialla förflutna som finns kvar i dagens Brasilien.

Mascaro has directed four feature length documenta-ries that have circulated in major festivals around the world including IDFA, CPH:DOX, BAFICI, Cartagena, Visions du Reel, Munich Film Fest. Gabriel’s recent work transits between documentary, fiction and experimental art video.

Brazil and Angola while on either side of the Atlantic Ocean have the same language, a common colonial past and many shared stories. In this film, corres-pondence is exchanged between these two places – some people are longtime friends, others have never met.

Born in Rio de Janeiro, Murat was an activist during the dictatorship in Brazil. and this experience is highly influential in all of her work. Murat is undoubtedly one of the most sensitive and critic female directors in Brazil’s contemporary cinema. In its 5th edition (2010), BrasilCine payed homage to the director.

Gatto and Barbot are lifelong companions for more then 40 years and have just moved to an abandoned building in Rio de Janeiro, where they start to live and promote their dance company rehearsals. The difficulties of everyday life are merged to artistic creation and to their belief in the Orishas Gods. Bit by bit, they spread their dance throughout the city.

Gatto och Barbot har varit vänner i mer än 40 år och har precis flyttat till ett övergivet hus i Rio de Janeiro där de bestämmer sig för att leva och driva sin dans-grupp. Deras dagliga svårigheter blandas med deras konstnärliga skapelser och så småningom sprider de sin dans över staden.

lilla BrasilcineEfter många år har vår dröm äntligen slagit in och vi på BrasilCine kunde inte vara gladare och stoltare att pre-sentera den första upplagan av Lilla BrasilCine med filmer helt tillägnade barn och ungdomar.

Under BrasilCine visar vi fyra filmer uppdelade i 10 sessioner, varav 8 är skolbio och 2 är öppna för allmänheten.

En av Lilla BrasilCines största målsättningar är att bli en mötesplats där filmare, producenter och finansiärer får chansen att diskutera och utveckla samproduktionsprojekt både i Brasilien och Sverige. Vi har därför bjudit in två fantastiska samarbetspartner. Financing Forum for Kids Content är det enda evenemanget i sitt slag i nor-ra Europa som bidrar med nätverk, engagerande verktyg och kunskap till oberoende producenter, distributörer och finansiärer av Children’s Media Content: Film, TV och Multi-plattform. Vi har även bjudit in den mest kända brasilianska barnfilmsfestivalen, Florianopolis Children’s Film Festival som är en öppen plats för samproduk-tion och kulturell integration mellan olika länder. Festivalen är en referens när det gäller social integration och medborgarskap genom film.

Little BrasilCineAfter many years, our dream has finally come true and we at BrasilCine could not be happier and prouder to present the first edition of Little BrasilCine with movies entirely dedicated to children and youth.

During BrasilCine, 4 films will be screened in 10 sessions, of which 8 are private school screenings and 2 are open to the general public.

One of our aims with Little BrasilCine is to also become a solid meeting-place where filmmakers, producers and financiers get the chance to discuss and develop co- production projects both in Brazil and Sweden. To acheive this we have invited two amazing actors to joined us. Our first partner is the Financing Forum for Kids Content, which is the only event of it’s kind in Northern Europe. It provides industry network, engaging tools and knowhow for independent producers, distributors and financiers of Children’s Media Content: Film, TV and Multi-platform. Our second partner is Brazil’s most renowned festival dedicated to children, Florianopolis Children’s Film Festival. It is an open space for co-production and cultural integration between countries and serves as a reference of social inclusion and citizenship through cinema.

Annette Brejner har startat, utvecklat och varit ansvarig för BUFF Financing Forum 2007-2012. Under 1990-talet var hon projektledare på Danska filminstitutet i Köpenhamn och ansvarig för kortfilmer och dokumentärer för barn och vuxna. Hon är före detta festivaldirektör på International Female Film Festival Malmö (IFEMA) och sedan 2010 har hon varit chef för BUFF:s Kids Cluster.

Erling Ericsson är en svensk animatör och TV-producent. Han har arbetat med barn i över 20 år och lärt dem att göra animerad film, och har utvecklat en pedago-gisk modell för filmskapande som har spridit sig över hela världen.

Luiza Lins anordnar filmfestivaler för barn i olika städer i hela Brasilien. Hon har varit filmkurator för många brasilianska filmfestivaler och har föreläst om film och utbildning i olika universitet och evenemang i Brasilien och utomlands. Under 2002 organiserade hon den första upplagan av Florianopolis Children’s Film Festival, ett evenemang som främjar social integration och utbildning genom film och utveck-ling av barns filmer.

Wilson Lazaretti är professor på ett av Brasiliens största universitet, UNICAMP i São Paulo där han har jobbat i 22 år. Han bildade och driver Animation Film Association, som fokuserar på oberoende produktioner inom animerad film som skiljer sig från de kommersiella filmerna.

Little BrasilCine’s special guests:Annette Brejner has started, developed and been in charge of BUFF Financing Forum from 2007 until 2012. She has been the curator for many Brazilian film festivals and given lectures on film and education at various universities and events in Brazil and abroad. Since 2002, she or-ganizes Florianopolis Children’s Film Festival, an event that promotes social inclusion and education through film and development of children’s cinema.

Wilson Lazaretti is a filmmaker and professor at one of Brazil’s biggest university, UNICAMP in São Paulo where he has worked for 22 years. He is the founder of the Animation Film Association, which focuses on independent animation productions that differ substantially from commercial productions.
