It was a truly impressive and memorable assembly and the children, as usual, asked many sharp and interesng quesons, including ‘What do they do when one of them has a birthday while they are away?’ We were all astounded and delighted at the end when Mr McCarter showed us video clips of Joanna Lumley and the great Sir Ran himself (just off the plane aſter being flown home with frostbite) personally addressing us all at Kew College and thanking us for our interest and support. From the show of hands at the end it is clear that Kew College will be boasng many famous explorers in the future. I will be watching with interest! HEADTEACHER’S COMMENDATIONS Congratulations to the following children, who received the award this week: Amelia C, in 1K, who received the award this week for a beautiful holiday

diary project.

Well done!

Dear Parents, On Wednesday 6th March we were extremely fortunate to have Mr Paul McCarter, the fa-ther of a pupil in Nursery, who is the Communications and Technology Adviser for The Coldest Journey’s Antarctic Expedition, talking to the Junior children in assembly. He gave us a very vivid, clear and informative talk about how the journey has been organised, the equipment needed, the extreme temperatures, the risks involved and the benefits to be derived from this kind of expedition. The children were fascinated to see film of the ex-pedition’s ship being loaded with all the equipment needed for a whole year’s journey, to hear of the perils of extreme temperatures, crevasses and frostbite, and to learn about the different ways in which we, and explorers in remote and dangerous locations, can com-municate over large distances. It was a truly impressive and memorable assembly and the children, as usual, asked many sharp and interesting questions, including ‘What do they do when one of them has a birthday while they are away?’ We were all astounded and delighted at the end when Mr McCarter showed us video clips of Joanna Lumley and the great Sir Ran himself (just off the plane after being flown home with frostbite) personally addressing us all at Kew College and thanking us for our interest and support. From the show of hands at the end it is clear that Kew College will be boasting many famous explorers in the future. I will be watching with interest! We have decided to hold the Charity Election for our new school charity at the beginning of next term as the end of this term is very busy. We are very keen to focus on LOCAL char-ities next year, in particular those based in Kew or Richmond, and would be glad to have proposals from you and your children. Thank you. The long-awaited list of Year 6 children’s Senior School entrance exam results will be sent to you on Monday. I wish you a pleasant and restoring weekend. Anne Dobell

The WI Would you like a WI in Kew? For nearly 100 years the WI has been bringing women together to build new friendships, discover new interests, learn new skills, be inspired by others and, above all to have fun! Do you think it is time we had a WI in Kew? There are no rules about what a WI should be, it can develop according to the interests of its members- it will be what we all make it. Please come along to the inaugural meeting on: Thursday 14th March at 7.30pm In The Pavilion North Sheen Recreation Ground (Entrance in Dancer Road) We will be hearing from our local Surrey WI advisers about the WI and how we can start our own. If there is sufficient interest, we can go ahead and elect Officers and an organising Committee whose first task will be to sign up members. Bring along your friends for a fun social evening tea and coffee will be available to buy from the cafe, wine will also be on offer (for a donation).

Kew Book Day By Saoirse 4F and Olivia M 4F

I woke up, kicked my blanket off eager to start what I knew was going to be a fun packed day. I leaped out of bed, ready to put my unique and exotic costume on. I jumped down the stairs, and sprinted exhilaratingly to school. I turned and… WOW! The school had trans-formed into a winter wonderland! I stepped through the icy doorway feeling proud that my school, Kew College looked so fine. I strode into the classroom, where I saw everybody looking outstanding in their costumes. I put my big fluffy reading cushion down and then it was off to assembly. What more surpris-es lay in store for us, I wondered as we started for the sedum. Once inside, we could see that Mrs Belshaw had a problem, she had to look after her poor sick children. Then some-one knocked on the window. It was Captain Read (Mr Schmidt), he jumped through the window to save the day which made everyone laugh, even the teachers. Afterwards we were given a poetry chair where we had the chance to read a beautiful poem to our class-mates. The best part of the day was still to come; the BFG workshop! Kirsty, the teacher, taught us a rap about “human beans”, dramatic freeze frames from the book and we learnt giant names like Flesh Eater, Blood Bottler, Human Hugger and Maid Masher. It was a terrific day and one I will never forget.

The National Grid by Alex 4H

On the 4th March, Year 4 went on a trip to the National Grid. The coach drive was about half an hour long. When we reached our destination the whole year group got really excited. We were led into a room where we had a talk from a man who was running a huge project. The project was to build tunnels under London, then to put huge pipes containing loads of electricity in the tunnels. We went to see a replica of what the tunnels will look like; the pipes were about five centimetres thick!

After the talk we went to see one of the tunnels being made. It was very low down and we could see all the builders working there. When we were walking back to the main room I saw the huge mounds of earth and clay that they had dug up. After learning about the tunnels we went and played some games and quizzes on some computers. I learnt a lot of interesting facts about the National Grid and electricity. Later, after we had lunch, we made these things called Zoom Zoomers, which are basically two paper loops tied together with straws. We had a competition to see who could throw theirs the furthest and I won! Just after that we went to make wind-mills. Mine didn’t work, but it doesn’t matter because it was a great trip and I really enjoyed it. My favourite part was probably seeing the tunnels being made.

The Energy Education Centre at the National Grid by Ella 4F

On Monday 4th March, Year 4 visited the National Grid at Willesden. There we saw a deep, wide shaft which is being used to get deep enough so that other tunnels can be dug underneath the houses and underground train lines. The National Grid are tunnelling a 19 kilometre under-ground electricity super highway under London’s streets and is installing cables that will carry electricity in the future.

We travelled by bus to the centre and first of all we were shown a model of the machine which is being used to dig the tunnels. It was cylindrical in shape, with a pointed end. After that we had a talk about different ways of producing electricity, such as wind, nuclear, solar and gas power. We were then shown the shaft and we could see a long pipe which provided the workers below with fresh air.

After eating our lunch we entered a temporary building which was the activity centre, where we constructed a windmill and a Zoomy Zoomer. This is a rocket shaped flying machine made out of straws and cardboard.

At the end of our trip I learnt that there are many different ways of making electricity and that we need to change the way we make it in the future. I also learnt about how the National Grid is finding new ways to supply energy across London. The part I enjoyed the most was doing the various activities to learn about electricity.

Year 3 Netball v Kew Green Prep On Tuesday March 5th Kew College played Kew Green at netball. The teachers hid a ring and we had to choose a hand. Kew Green won and chose first centre pass. They soon scored a goal. Quite some time after that they scored quite a few more goals. Then Eve scored one goal! It was half time and Miss Sidey gave us an encouraging talk to spread out more. After that we went back onto the court and start-ed the second half. Kew Green then scored a few more goals and we scored one more before the final whistle blew. Well done to everyone who played in the match. I think that we could improve on spreading out a bit more and passing quicker. Lilla 3S

Year 3 A Team Rugby Match v Kew Green Prep On Tuesday the 5th March, Year 3 A team played a tag rugby match against Kew Green Prep. We were all feeling very excited about our FIRST EVER rug-by match. Kew Green started with the ball and were the first to score a try. We soon managed to break through their defensive line and score our first try. It was a close first half and the score was 4-3 to Kew Green Prep. Mr Harry gave us lots of encouragement and we jogged back onto the pitch determined to win. Our tagging was amazing and we managed to get two turnovers (when you get 6 consecutive tags so that the opposition have to give you the ball) which result-ed in more tries for us. The final score was 7-5 to Kew College! Well done to all the team Max, Jake, Leo, William, Paddy, James, Joel R and Me. Next time we need to make sure we keep TWO hands on the ball and do LESS knock-ons (dropping the ball!) Josh 3

Year 5 Rugby v St James All the boys bundled onto the coach to Barn Elms. Buzzing with anticipation we walked on to the pitch, St James won the toss and they chose to start. With some great tackling from the whole team we ripped the ball away, it was extremely slippery in my hands. Determined, I charged to-wards the opposition then offloaded it to Ted, Josh and Benji and I supported desperately as we charged through the defence of St James. At halftime the score was 4 -1 to Kew College and Mr Attenborough gave us an encouraging talk and then we walked back onto the muddy field. We started and we spun into Joseph S hands. With some great passing we scored 3 more tries. Unfortunately, we gave away some silly penalties and they scored 2 tries. Overall we played ex-tremely well, so thanks to Josh, Charlie, Joseph D, Thomas A, Benji, Joseph S and Ted. The end score was 7-3 to Kew College. Oscar Y5

Year 4 B Team Rugby v St James On Thursday 7th March, Year 4 B team played a rugby match against St James. We arrived at Barn Elms in the drizzling rain with freezing cold hands, ready to go. The whistle blew and I passed to Oliver who threw to Vincent and he ran up the pitch and scored an amaz-ing try. There was some outstanding play by the B team, aggressive tackling, impressive running and some successful scrums. However, after a long, ex-hausting and very muddy game, the final score was 9 tries to St James and 4 tries to Kew College. Well played Year 4 B team. I think we need to im-prove on our spacing out. Ptolemy 4H

Year 6 B Team Rugby v St James

On Thursday 7th March, Year 6 B team, and a couple of Year 5’s played an extraordinary match against St. James. We lost the toss, but started with the ball, Shachar was scrum half. We gained a good portion of the pitch, however they soon caught the ball and rushed towards our try line. We hastily sprinted back, deter-mined not to let us fall behind so early in the game. With some fast running, Graham stuck his hand under the ball and stopped it from touching the ground and the Referee came and said it was not a try. There was a scrum, with Rory, Robert and Noah. The other team pushed forward and retrieved the ball and ran forward to score their first try. Although disappointed, we held our chins up and ran forward and again they got the ball and scored two tries before half time. At half time we changed a few positions and had an encouraging talk from Laurence. We walked onto the extremely muddy pitch feeling self-confident. St. James started with the ball this time and ran forward and scored a try. Or so we thought, as it turns out it was a forward pass and we went into another scrum. Time flew by and we managed to stop many tries but did not score any ourselves. Suddenly the whistle went and the game finished 3 - 0 to them. Well done to the players Robert, Rory, Noah, Graham, Jonathan, Luca, Shachar, Thomas Y and ME! Charles Y5

Year 3 B Team Rugby v Kew Green Prep

On Tuesday the Year 3 B team played rugby against Kew Green Prep it was our first Year 3 match! Everyone had a great game and there were fabulous runs and tries from Sam and Andrew. I was very proud to get 5 tries thanks to good passing from the team. We drew 8 all. We need to work on our passing and running straight. Well played! Luke 3B

Year 3 A Team Rugby v St James

On Thursday the Year 3 A Rugby team played a game against St James. It was a muddy match! Thanks to some amazing passing we got lots of tries. The final score was 11-7. Luke 3B

Year 3 Netball Match v Kew Green

On Tuesday 5th March some Year 3 girls played a brilliant match against Kew Green. We won the coin toss and had the first centre pass. When the whistle blew I passed to Ella and we were soon zooming down the pitch and we scored a goal, it was 1- 0 to Kew College. When Kew Green restarted they passed down the pitch to try and score a goal, but they didn't. Then Eliza passed to Tara, she passed to me and we got the ball down the pitch. We tried to score but the goal keeper stopped it. Then Kew Green scored a goal. At half time we were sweating and then we got back onto the pitch after an encouraging talk from Miss Sidey. We scored 2 more goals and Kew Green scored 1 more. The end score was 3 – 2 to Kew College. Well done to all the girls who played especially Angelina for her brilliant goal scoring! I think we need to work on defending our partners and spacing. Emily F 3S

Year 3 Netball Match v Kew Green Prep On Tuesday 5th March, Year 3 played a netball match against Kew Green Prep. Kew Green got the first centre pass and the ball headed straight to their post. They had several attempts at the goal and the ball got in. 1 – 0 to Kew Green Prep. It was our centre pass. Amelie passed to Phoebe who passed to Nikki who passed to Lucy and then Eve, who scored a successful goal. At half time, Miss Sidey gave us an encouraging talk and we returned to the court to start the next half. Kew Green Prep got to the centre pass and scored another goal. The final score was 14 to Kew Green Prep and 2 to Kew College. Well done to all the girls who played. I think we need to work on spac-ing out. Lucy C 3B

Year 5 B Team Rugby v St James

On Thursday 7th March, Kew College B team played a rugby match against St James. After an encouraging talk from Mr Attenborough we headed for the field. St James won the toss and decided to start with the ball in the 2nd half. They managed to tackle us and scored two tries. With some great passing from Daniel K and Daniel B, we managed to score our first two, as the whistle blew for half time. In the second half we tried to score but St James managed to tackle us and score another try. Rohan passed the ball to me and I scored our 2nd Try. St James managed to squeeze in 3 more tries. Lachlan made an amaz-ing run in order to score but was seized by St James. Daniel K scored our final try. The final score was 7-3 to St James. Well done Oliver, Lachie, Rohan Daniel K, Daniel B, Carl and me. Samarth 5L

NURSERY RED AND YELLOW LIVING EGGS

Nursery has had an egg-cellent start to the Spring term! This week we received eggs to begin our

chicken hatching program. Nursery Red saw the eggs beginning to crack and Nursery Yellow were

lucky enough to see our first chick break out of its egg! Chick number one was a boy. We can tell

the difference between boys and girls as boys are bright yellow and girls are light brown.

By Thursday morning five chicks had hatched much to the excitement of Nursery Red! During the

morning one more hatched. Nursery Yellow arrived to come in and see four chicks still in the incu-

bator and the two being moved into their Brooder.

The Chicks will be leaving Kew College next Friday, if any Parents would like to re-home a chick

please inform your child's teacher before next Friday. Thank you
