Located on a bus line in a bustling area of downtown Cincinnati,Queen City Wine & Spirits owner and manager Rinkal Patelsees at least one new customer every day. He’s been using thatunique opportunity to build his business.

“We try to make them a regular customer,” says Rinkal, whosestore is located on East 5th Street, between Walnut and MainStreet.

Since purchasing the store with business partner Vinay Patel in2013, Rinkal and his staff have worked hard to grow the store’sLottery business from scratch. Theprevious owners did not sell OhioLottery games.

Rinkal has worked 12- to 14-hourdays to build his base of Lotteryplayers and inspire customerconfidence.

“That’s what we work hard for,”he says. Rinkal has the supportof one part-time and four fulltimeemployees.

The growth has been substantial.Lottery sales have more thandoubled since 2014, its first fullyear under current management.Rinkal, a University of Toledograduate, decided early on thathe wanted to own his own business. He received additionalon-the-job training from his uncle, who owned a Toledo-areaconvenience store.

Today, Rinkal holds an interest in four Lottery retail locations inCincinnati and Dayton. As a partner in a family-owned business,he devotes his time to Queen City Wine & Spirits, overseeingboth Lottery and the store’s busy wholesale and retail beveragebusiness.

When customers don’t fill out their betcards completely or aren’t sure howto do so, he encourages employeesto help them out, specifically askingthem how they would like to playbefore completing their transactions.He’s seen other retailers makecustomers move to the back of theline to complete unfinished bet cards.Rinkal says this just causes confusionand hard feelings.

As another step to help customers,Rinkal has placed a large sign bythe checkout counter, remindingcustomers to make sure their ticketsare correct before leaving.

“I don’t want to lose customers,” saysRinkal. “We give them 100% of service and listen closely.”

Rinkal now has plans to open another store, Queen City Express,on Walnut Street in downtown Cincinnati, and hopes to see theoverall business grow.

“You have to talk to customers every single day. They can seethat this is my store,” says Rinkal.

Preparing for the new Photon terminalA retailer focus group recently reviewed the basic set-up and operation of the Photon retailer terminal and supporting peripherals. The terminal is now in testing, with distribution expected to begin this fall.

First steps for retailers: Now is the time to think about how you might position the terminal, based on its footprint and other space usage needs. Please note: The Photon is slightly larger than the Microlot terminal.

Equipment measurements:Terminal: 10.5” W x 12.5” D x 21” HPrinter: 6.5” W x 12.0” D x 10” H

The new terminal will replace both the Coronis Hee and Microlot terminals currently in the field.

The clerk-operated equipment will include a terminal with a self-contained scanner, a hand-held scanner, printer and credit/debit card processor.

Enhanced terminal features include:• A 15” touchscreen

• Powerful, camera-based scanner

• Standardized “shopping cart” for transactions

• Improved reliability, as the terminal has no moving parts
