Erie County Fair Beef & Dairy Cattle Show Results

The Erie County Fair Open Class Beef Show was held on Friday and Saturday, August 21st and 22nd. 28 exhibitors showed 64 animals representing six breeds of beef cattle. Local winners include: Champion Jackpot Steer: Nathan Hoelscher of Eden, NY. The Fair was also host to 163 color breed dairy cattle. Over $15,000.00 of premium money was awarded to the 35 dairy color breed cattle exhibitors. Local winners include: Milking Shorthorn: Champion Jr. Female: Richmond Farms Dairy of North Collins, NY; Oth-er Dairy Breeds: Champion Senior Female, Grand Cham-pion Female & Champion Udder: Michaela Richmond of North Collins, NY.

Erie County Fair ALSA Llama Show Results

The Erie County Fair was host to 78 llamas on Friday, August 14th through Sunday, August 16th, when the 20th annual Erie County Fair ALSA Llama Show was held. The 15 exhibitors from New York competed in halter classes, as well as showmanship, pack, public relations, and obstacle. Over $3,450.00 in premiums and prizes were awarded dur-ing the three day show. Local winners include: Champion Heavy Wool Female: Susan K Phillips of Lawtons, NY- TCRNY’s Sugar Cookie; Intermediate Youth Reserve Per-formance Champion: Ivy Schrecengost of Eden, NY; Junior Youth Reserve Performance Champion: Mya Schrecengost of Eden, NY.

Michael G. Herman, Jr., age 30, of Rapid City, South Dakota, formerly of Eden, New York, died unexpectedly on Sunday, August 23, 2015. He was born April 2, 1985 in Buffalo, New York. The son of Michael G. and Jeanne (nee: Buck) Herman, Sr. Michael graduated from Eden Central School in 2003. He was an active member of Young Life while growing up. He joined the United States Army and served 3 tours in Iraq. His last rank held was Staff Ser-geant. He married his wife, Alison Southerland on May 26, 2013 in Grand Rapids, Michigan. He enjoyed riding his motorcycles, dirt bikes and target practicing. He had a special love of children. He was a friend to everyone he came in contact with. He was the devoted husband of Alison (Nee: Southerland), son of Michael and Jeanne (Nee: Buck) Sr., brother of Sara (Matthew) Monnat and Kimberly (Joseph) Nicosia. Grandson of Antoinette (late John) Herman and late Guy and Betty Buck. Also survived by 5 nieces and one nephew. DEAR DR. ROACH: You recently wrote that antihis-tamines used for sleep can increase the risk of falls. Are there any sleep aids that don’t increase fall risk? -- C.A.L.ANSWER: Since almost all medications are associated with fall risk, reducing the overall number of medi-cations should be a goal for all of us who prescribe medication for older peo-ple. Some medications are more risky than others, such as the antihistamines I mentioned, but also pre-scription sleep aids such as Ambien, Lunesta and Sona-ta, antidepressants such as amitriptyline (Elavil) and others, diazepam (Valium) and related drugs. Major tranquilizers such as Sero-quel are high risk.Insomnia itself increases fall risk, so eff ective treat-ment that doesn’t use medi-cations that cause problems the next day is the goal. Melatonin works for some people; melatonin 0.3 mg might be eff ective and ap-pears to have a lower risk of falls. Better still, non-drug treatment such as cognitive behavior therapy, including sleep hygiene, has no risk of medication-associated falls and may reduce overall fall risk by improving sleep.Basics of sleep hygiene in-clude avoiding long (lon-ger than 20 minutes) naps, avoiding bright light (in-cluding TV and computer) before bed, reserving the bed strictly for sleep and maintaining the same bed-time and wake time every day. A CBT therapist can give much more detailed and personalized informa-

Can you please explain to me what it means to be a “carrier”? I would hate to think that I might pass it on to my grandchildren by touching them, or changing their diapers, etc.I work in a hospital and feel I have a “dirty” secret, be-cause all I get is, “Just wash your hands.” Any informa-tion that you may have on the subject would be greatly appreciated. -- M.D.

ANSWER: A carrier is someone who harbors a condition but who has no symptoms of the condi-tion. Th ere is a possibility of passing on a condition when you are a carrier.In your case, the bacteria Clostridium difi cile, uni-versally called “C. diff ,” is present in about 3 percent

of all healthy adults. How-ever, somewhere between20 percent and 50 percentof patients in hospitalsand long-term-care facili-ties have asymptomatic C.diff . Th e spores of C. diff are very, very diffi cult toeradicate and can be found on many surfaces, and sohospital workers as well aspatients may become in-fected (with symptoms ofdiarrhea) or can be carriers.Th is may be how you ac-quired the bacteria.Current guidelines do notrecommend treatment forcarriers. Th e most import-ant way to prevent yourpassing on the infection isgood hand-washing. Th ebest method is warm wa-ter and soap aft er using thebathroom. (My hospitalrecommends singing “Hap-py Birthday” in your headtwice to be sure you arewashing long enough.) Al-cohol sanitizers are ineff ec-tive for C diff . By being me-ticulous in hand-washing,you can minimize the riskof passing on the bacteria.
