If you are a current or former smoker concerned about lung cancer, a new

test being offered at Summit Medical Group may help put your mind at ease. Low-dose computed tomography (CT) scanning can detect early-stage lung cancer, pinpointing nodules as small as 4 millimeters in diameter, when the cancer is in its most treatable stages.

A SILent KILLerLung cancer is the leading cause of cancer deaths among men and women, resulting in more deaths every year than colon, breast, and prostate cancers combined, according to the American Cancer Society.

The main reason is that there hasn’t been an effective way to screen for lung cancer, explains Jessie Wilt, MD, a pulmonary and critical care specialist at Summit Medical Group. “A small nodule in the lung does not cause any symptoms,” she says. “By the time patients start showing signs like shortness of breath or chest pain, the cancer has usually spread.”

Are You A cAndIdAte?Dr. Wilt emphasizes that CT scans are not appropriate for everyone. A 2011 report from the National Lung Screening

Trial showed that the scans are useful only for individuals who:• Are 55 to 74 years old• Are current smokers or former smok-

ers who quit within the last 15 years• Have a history of at least 30 pack

years (the number of cigarettes smoked per day multiplied by the number of years the person smoked)

• Have no history of lung cancer

Dr. Wilt also notes that patients must have three consecutive negative annual CT scans (no abnormal fi ndings) to be considered “clear,” or to be 99 percent confi dent that cancer is not present. “However, no test will completely absolve someone of risk,” she says.

The scan itself takes 15 minutes, and the results are read by a radiologist within a day. If an abnormality is found, the next step may be a biopsy to remove the nodule and test it for cancerous cells. “Removing an isolated nodule also eradicates the cancer, if cancer is indeed present,” Dr. Wilt says. “If the cancer is still in its earliest stage, and has not spread to surrounding tissues, patients may not need chemotherapy or radiation. For the fi rst time, we have a tool that allows us to intervene early enough for patients to have a better outcome.”

Is Screening right for You?

Summit Medical Group is now offering lung cancer screening to promote early detection of lung cancer for those at high risk.

People at high risk include:• Smokers or former smokers ages

55 to 74• Those still smoking or who quit

smoking within the past 15 years• People with a history of 30 or more

“pack years” (the number of ciga-rettes smoked per day multiplied by the number of years smoked)

Low-dose CT scans without contrast are endorsed by the American Lung Association. CT scans are done once a year for three years in a row. The cost is not covered by insurance. Summit Medical Group is charging $199.

With so many healthcare changes going into effect over the next few months, things can seem confusing at

times. One thing that has not changed is that patients have the right to choose which facilities or providers deliver their care—that choice is yours.

“While it’s a benefit to patients, it can also lead to some confusion because your health insurance company may tell you that another facility can perform a test you need for less,” explains Kathryn Vendemia, medical imaging manager at Summit Medical Group. “It’s your choice to go where you want, and although cost is important, there are many different factors to consider when choosing a healthcare facility.”

‘Second to none’For instance, Vendemia points out, “all of the imaging equipment at Summit Medical Group is state-of-the-art and the quality of services is second to none.” With appointments available seven days a week, including mornings and eve-nings, you can find a convenient time that works best with your schedule. You may even have the option of scheduling several screenings within the same appointment.

“After a test or screening, the images are available

instantaneously,” Vendemia adds. “Thanks to the electronic medical records, once the images from your test or screening are read by our in-house radiologists, your physicians can immedi-ately pull up the images wherever they are.” The electronic medical records also mean that all your information is stored in one place and all of your Summit Medical Group providers can access them at any time for seamless continuity of care.

Your next MoveTo make an informed decision, call your health insurer directly to find out what you can expect to pay, recommends Peter Saunders, Director of Revenue Cycle Management. “Confirm that Summit Medical Group is in your insurance network, and ask what your out-of-pocket costs will be,” he says. Your insurance company’s website also may have an online cost estimator to help determine what you can expect to owe. Keep in mind that routine screenings, such as a colonos-copy, are 100 percent covered under the Affordable Care Act.

“If the rest of your doctors are here, it just makes sense to get all of your medical services under one roof,” Saunders adds. “You have the choice to go where you are most comfortable and will get the best care.”

If you ever need surgery, the doctor who is operating on you may be

seated a few feet away instead of stand-ing next to you. With robotic surgery, the surgeon uses a computer to remote-ly guide small instruments attached to a robot, while a tiny camera inside your body allows him or her to see what’s going on.

Once you’re fast asleep under general anesthesia, the surgeon, without the robot, makes small cuts into your body and inserts the robotic instruments, including a thin tube topped with a camera. (Because there are no big incisions, as there are with traditional open surgery, robotic surgery is what’s called “minimally invasive surgery.”)

MAGnIFIed vIeW The surgeon then sits at a nearby computer. Here, a monitor shows a highly magnifi ed, three-dimensional

view of the surgical site. The surgeon views the site through the monitor while using a set of controls to guide the robotic arms.

Robotic surgery comes with pros and cons. It can take longer than traditional surgery, given robot set-up time. And as with any surgery, you could have a bad reaction to the anesthesia, bleeding and infection. On the other hand, the surgeon is more comfortable sitting at a computer. The robot’s instruments can be easier to use than more traditional instruments, and they can reach places that open surgery and other minimally invasive methods can’t.

More exAct MoveMentS Using the robotic arms, the surgeon can make smaller, more exact movements than would otherwise be possible. For every inch that the surgeon’s hand moves, the robot moves only half an inch. And,

because it’s minimally invasive, robotic surgery means a shorter hospital stay, faster recovery, and smaller scars.

MAnY dIFFerent uSeSSurgical robots can be used for a variety of procedures. They remove gallbladders and kidneys, replace hips and do hyster-ectomies, cut out cancer tissue and perform coronary artery bypasses. At this time robotic surgery can’t do more complex operations, however. And certainly it’s true that the skill of the surgeon is a key factor in the outcome of any surgery.

To know if robotic surgery is your best choice, read as much as you can about it, and talk with your surgeon. Ask what his or her experience is with it. Investigate all the methods for performing the surgery you need. Robotic surgery may not be for you, or it could be just what the doctor ordered.

My pregnancies have been anything but routine, but Summit Medical Group was there every step of the way to ensure a happy outcome.

It all began November 22, 2005. Dr. Whalen was my main obstetrician, and my baby was due on January 13, 2006. I went to Summit Medi-cal Group in Warren to see Dr. Gibbons. It was supposed to be a normal, routine exam, but an exam showed I was 4 centimeters dilated. I was told to go right to the hospital!

An Early ArrivalAt the hospital, every effort was made to keep my baby from being born so soon. But she was going to be born that day. Dr. Whalen eased my anx-iety throughout the delivery.

Kassandra Marie came into the world at 5 pounds, 13 ounces, and so beautiful. Thanks to the Summit Medical Group team of skilled physi-cians, my premature baby was born healthy. She is now 7½ and is more than 4 feet tall.

Summit Medical Group came into play again about a year later. I went to the Urgent

Care Center at Summit Medical Group because of pain, red-ness and swelling in one arm.

It turned out to be a deep vein thrombosis, or blood clot, in my arm. To top it off, I found out in the hospital that I was pregnant again. I was admitted for two days to receive heparin intravenously.

Team Effort Pays OffThroughout my pregnancy, I had to inject myself with a blood thinner. Not only were the obstetricians at Summit Medical Group there for me, but the hematologist team at Summit Medical Group was there for me as well.

Bryan Jr. was born on May 23, 2007—two weeks early, but not premature. Thanks again to the obstetric team at SMG. I have a lot of trust and confidence in the physicians at Summit Medical Group.

Thank you all for the won-derful medical care you gave me. I am blessed with two wonderful children, thanks to your expertise!

Sincerely,Maria Ruban
