FROM THE PASTOR

"ONE AND 'TWENTY" PLUS

When I was four or five years old, almost nightly, I would ask my parents an all important question before going to sleep: "HOW MANY MORE DAYS BEFORE MY BIRTHDAY?" They never gave me a mathematical answer. It was either "a long time" or "not a long time” or "soon.” Why did I do that? Kids like parties-- especially their own. There were also birthday gifts and all the special attention. I could even pick my favorite Sunday breakfast-- French Toast with cinnamon and sugar. Long ago, I stopped asking my parents for a “countdown” in anticipation of my birthday. I received practical gifts to mark the passage of years - - long pants, a bicycle, my own phonograph , a good fountain pen and eventually my first electric shaver. At twenty-one, I informed everyone that, after graduating from college, I would enter the Seminary. Like many other people, my twenty – first was my happiest birthday. That wasn’t because I was “of age” and could have beer with my pizza. It was because so much of life lay ahead! When you are twenty—one everyone wants to give advice. Rarely is it heeded. Were I to chose a poet for twenty - one year olds, it would be A. E. Houseman. In fact, Houseman wrote the perfect short poem to celebrate the "wise-folly" of youth. When I was one-and-twenty I heard a wise man say, "Give crowns and pounds and guineas But not your heart away; Give pearls away and rubies But keep your fancy free. But I was one-and-twenty, No use to talk to me. When I was one-and-twenty the wise man said again, "The heart from out the bosom Was never given in vain; ‘Tis paid with sighs a-plenty and sold for endless rue.” And I am two-and-twenty, And , Oh, ‘tis true,” true. A .E. Houseman's poem appealed to my melancholy side. I memorized it and tried (unsuccessfully) to set

it to a folk song melody . It was the kind of twenty- two year old behavior that went with Harris Tweeds and a pipe from Iwan Ries, the tobacconist of choice in the 1960s.

I had another favorite Houseman poem that was both funny and cynical enough to appeal to me after 35. It’s "Terrence , This is Stuff.” I suppose, in a bitter nutshell, it offers advice to all who would live in a real world that contains "much good, but much

less good than ill." Escapism isn’t the solution, nor is it a morbid fatalism.

“Terrence, this is stupid stuff: You eat your victuals fast enough; There can't be much amiss, tis clear, To see: the rate you drink your beer.”

Houseman advises "train for ill and not for good.” He uses as his model, Mithradates of Pontus, who slowly immunized himself from poison by taking a little each day. Thus, Mithradates survived his enemies. They poured strychnine in his cup And shook to see him drink it up: They shook, they stared as white’s their shirt. Them it was their poison hurt. -- I tell the tale that I heard told. Mithradates, he died old. Now past my middle years and even past my “prime,” I no longer eagerly count the days to my birthday, but I savor the years after twenty-one. Houseman still delights even if he “bites.” I now prefer Chesterton and Newman. I am one and twenty plus forty - six. I do hope and pray for more! - Fr. Luczak

SPIRITUAL LIFE

RESPECT LIFE MONTH

+THE MEASURE OF LOVE IS TO LOVE WITHOUT MEASURE….”The catch is that we will not be fit for heaven until we have learned to love one another as God loves us, as he radically demonstrated on the Cross. If we don’t learn to love sacrificially, we may not only fail in reaching heaven, we will make life on earth hellish for ourselves and others. If ‘we succeed in pushing away everyone who is dependent, then we’re left with ourselves, our ego-centric, sin-rationalizing, defensive, irritable and vain selves. If we never learn to give till it hurts, till the painful reality that we’re not the center of the universe sinks in, we will fail at marriage, at parenthood, at citizenship, even at simple neighborliness. Our community will become a marketplace of the physically strong, but morally weak.’ “….How we care for an unexpected child, a parent suffering from cognitive impairment, or an infant with a disability does not reflect the degree of their humanity but our own. We are as dependent on them as they are on us. There can be no compromise with the standard Jesus set and continually calls us to: The measure of love is to love without measure!” c2010, USCCB + Join Bishop Joseph Perry and people from around the Archdiocese on Friday, October 15th for a special Respect Life Month Eucharistic Holy Hour. It will be at 7:30 p.m. at St. Mary of the Angels, 1850 N. Hermitage Avenue in Chicago. All are welcome!

SOMEONE WE SHOULD KNOW

On this Inclusion Sunday, a joint effort of the Archdiocese of Chicago and the Pathways Awareness Foundation, which encourages parishes in their efforts to create accessible faith communities where everyone can participate, we share the story of Mary Virginia Merrick. Mary Virginia Merrick was born to a prominent Washington, DC family on Nov. 2, 1866. A fall when she was a teenager damaged her spine and Mary used a wheelchair for mobility the rest of her life. In 1884, learning of a mother who had no clothing for her expected child, Mary gathered a group of friends from her parish who sewed baby clothes for the new baby. With help from her friends she also purchased Christmas gifts ‘from the Christ Child’ for children with families with limited resources. Thus the Christ Child Society of Washington, DC began. Within 10 year the scope of the Society’s activities expanded to provide health care and educational services to needy families in the Washington, D.C. area. With the encouragement of Cardinal James Gibbons, Mary organized the National Christ Child Society in 1905. Today there are 38 diocesan chapters across the country with over 8,000 volunteers working to assist America’s neediest families. Each chapter provides clothing for new babies and a variety of other services according to local needs. Miss Merrick continued as president of the National Christ Child Society until 1948 and remained head of the Washington D.C. Chapter until her death. Mary Virginia Merrick died Jan. 10, 1955. On April 2, 2003, the Congregation for the Cause of Saints in Rome declared her a Servant of God. The National Christ Child Society has launched the first steps in the canonization process. “Her leadership was made possible because her disability…was accommodated and her gifts were recognized. Her parish and religious leaders supported and encouraged her work. Mary’s life demonstrates the positive outcomes achieved when everyone is encouraged to share their gifts in our faith communities.” Thank you, people of St. Isaac Jogues Parish, for all you do to open your hearts, minds and doors to everyone!

The formula is sold in cans & plastic containers (8, 12.4 & 12.9 ounce). A baby who consumes any tainted formula may experience stomach or intestine discomfort & not want to eat. Health Literacy Month

To help clients manage illnesses & keep them healthier, health professionals need to share information & in-structions with them. A client’s understanding of what they are told or read is important to following directions & making changes that better their health. It is the job of the doctor, nurse, pharmacist, etc. to communicate in terms the patient can understand. Clients, though, can help by asking questions. The following, known as ASK ME 3, are designed to help you better care for your health: What is my main problem? What do I need to do? Why is it important for me to do this? Asking these 3 can help you better care for yourself, prepare for tests, & take your medicines the right way. You then are better prepared & know what to do for your health. If you don’t understand the answers or what you are to do, let the health professional know. Ask them to explain it again or use more everyday words. Re-member everyone needs help figuring out health information. At times, most of us find things confusing. By using ASK ME 3, we can better know how to stay well or get better. PARISH LIFE

Touchables

They always seemed To come out of nowhere

At sunset, at the end of the day When the dark clouds hover

Casting a silhouette, a shadow On their disfigured faces

Without looking They begged for alms and food

Whatever, in the gutter By the bridge, anywhere

Not so conspicuous To the ever maddening crowd

People wouldn’t come near More horrified than curious To see the open wounds

And what seemed like Puss, blood or something oozing

From their shrunken hands and noses

Leprosy might have put a chain On their withering bodies

But the fear and lack of compassion Shown by the people passing by

Seemed heavier to bear More difficult to unshackle

Mass and again at 7:00P.M. in the evening. The video is truly remarkable, stunning in its presentation and very moving. Based on the memoirs of Sister Lucia Dos Santos and eyewitness accounts, The 13th Day dramatizes the incredible true story of the three shepherd children from the village in Portugal who experienced the apparitions with a 'Lady from Heaven" between May and October 1917 which culminated in the final prophesied miracle. Stylistically beautiful and technically innovative, the writer-directors Ian and Dominic Higgins used state-of-the-art digital effects to create stunning images of the visions and the final miracle that have never before been fully realized on screen.

———————————————————————————————————————————————————— ADDING NAMES TO THE PARISH SICK LIST

It has always been the policy of St. Isaac Jogues to offer our parish community an opportunity to pray for those parish-ioners who are ill and in need of our prayers. We have tried to keep close track of these names for our Bulletin as they are made available to us. However, now we face an important privacy issue, very much like the issues faced by hospitals, health institutions, and certainly by other parishes. We cannot (by law) publicly let our parish community know the health status of any of our members without their permission. We appreciate the fact that often friends, neighbors, and acquaintances wish to do something special for a person who is ill, and ask to place their name on the list to be prayed for. While their intentions are surely good, we simply can no longer accept names in this manner. We will institute a new process regarding calling in names for the Bulletin list. Names for the sick list placed in the Bulletin have to be called in by the person who is ill, or by a member of their family. At the time they call in the name, they will be asked whether they are the sick person him/ herself, or a member of their family, and if they give permission for the name to be placed on the list. They will be asked for the cor-rect spelling of the sick person's name. If a family member, they will be required to give their name for our records. Thank you for your patience regarding this new process. We wish to do all we can to offer our parish community the opportunity to offer prayers for those who are ill — but we must also be cognizant of the fact that all members of our con-gregation are entitled to their privacy in this regard.
