CASE STUDIES

ISO 14001 Implementation at Mt. Baker Products I. Time ContextAfter all the significant aspects for the mill identified, objectives, targets and environmental management programs had to be developed for each aspect. These programs mean that the company could improve its environmental performance such as sanding operation, mill operation or operational control setting process. Being relatively unfamiliar with mill operation, Josh, an intern hired to manage the EMS implementation process, found that he making a series of mis-step in the part of the implementation, as detailed knowledge of the mill was required for the design of the programs. Another issue was the extremely demanding business schedules of team members because Josh neglected to provide training to team members.

II. ViewpointThe viewpoint comes from Josh the interns hired by the managers of MBP. He is the one responsible to manage the issue. He made decision wherein he is not sure with the result. He made steps wherein he didnt know completely.

III. Problem Statement1. Josh made a series of mis-step in mill operation, as the detailed knowledge of the mill was required for the design of the program.2. The implementation process was extremely demanding business schedules of team members except Josh, wherein Josh realized that transferring knowledge to other team member would be critical or difficult without using or providing training for implementation process.

IV. Statement of Objectives To increase environmental aspects of plywood

V. Underlying AssumptionsSince Josh identified the significant environmental aspect, established the environmental objectives, set the quantifiable targets and the program were already in place and running smoothly, the quality manual documenting EMS was nearing completion and the training sessions for the employees had begun, he felt justifiably proud for his accomplishments. However, he realized that his job was far from done because he was schedule to leave town in a few weeks, meaning he would not be available on site to help MBP as the registration process continued. The training, which he had been providing needed to continue while he was gone; someone else would need to provide it in his absence. VI. Statement of Areas of Consideration Training program should be evaluated carefully to be truly effective Environmental aspect is one of the things that the company needs to consider because it will increase the environmentally conscious customer base.

VII. Statement of Alternative Courses of ActionAlternative 1: Josh should assume that if he needs to leave the company for awhile he needs to set all the things in actionAlternative 2: Josh should assume that if he needs to leave the company for a while he needs to call one of the team to lead the training program

VIII. Statement of ConclusionWe therefore conclude that Josh have to proved more time to further educate or train MBP employee in ISO 14001

IX. Statement of RecommendationsWe recommend that Josh need to train very well all the employee of MBP. Josh should established a well organize step or process in mill operation.

XI. Scenario-Making (Plan B)If unsuccessful, Josh should give a documentation work that summarizes what he knows in implementing ISO to maintain control of the environmental management system.
