Part 1, Headlights….Let’s face it, lighting technology in the 1950’s was hardly what it is today. The original sealed beams in your classic were great at the time, but why limit the amount of range you get with sealed beams when you can substantially increase the range you get with Xenon bulbs, along with a much brighter, whiter light? You will have to do some modification to install them but we feel the increase in range far outweighs the trouble. Besides, it’s winter…what else are you going to do with your car?

Tools You Will Need:• Phillips Screwdriver• Small & Medium Flat Blade Screwdrivers• Needle Nose Pliers• Tin Snips or Similiar Cutting Tool• Round Rat Tail File• Wire Cutter / Crimp Tool• Electric or Air Drill• 13/64" Drill Bit• 3/8" Nut Driver or Socket with a Ratchet• Heat Shrink Tubing with a Hair Dryer or similiar to heat it with• Two 10/24 Screws with Nuts and Star Washers (Plus 2 extra Star Washers for the ground wires)• Three 14 GA Male Spade Connectors• Two 14 GA Loop Connectors• Two #10 Sheet Metal Screws• Danchuk #639 Moulding Clip• Danchuk #14646 Xenon Headlight Kit• Danchuk #16826 Headlight Wiring/Relay Kit

See and Be Seen…Upgrade the Lights in your Classic!

We try and do these types of mods with a minimal amount of cutting up of the car/parts, like we feel our readers would do. You get a cleaner looking result. Also, we did our install on a ‘56 - there may be slight differences for ‘55 and ‘57 applications. The harness mounts inside the engine compartment with the relays on the driver side mounted to the core support filler panel. Depending on the harness you are working with the colors of the wires in the harness will vary. We also found that, depending on the harness; there is either an inline fuse in the battery connec-tion or fusible links.

1.) Disconnect the battery.2.) Using your Phillips screw-driver, remove the 3 screws for the head-light bezel and remove the bezel.

3. ) Loca te the sp r ing that holds the headlight ring in place and us ing your needle nose pliers pull on it slightly to unhook it from the headlight ring.

4.) Remove the headlight/headlight ring and unhook the plug from the back of the bulb.

5.) You will need to trim the sub bucket to fit the new bulb. Remove it by prying next to the screw and twisting a little to get the tab out of the slot. Photo on next page.

6.) Trim the sub bucket with your tin snips, cutting a little at a time, until the headlight fits flush in the bucket. Clean up the cut with your file.

The headlight harness is not made specifi-cally for 55-57 Chevy’s and requires modifi-cations to make the install seamless. We are using crimp wire connectors, but you could solder the wires into the new connectors if you wanted. Be sure to seal the ends with shrink tubing to protect them.

7.) Remove the headlight bucket by removing the 4 Phillips head screws with your Phillips head screwdriver. Remove the gasket.

8.) Remove the existing headlight wires from the grommet and disconnect the tan (low beam) and light green (high beam) wires from the stock connector at the core support. They will just pull out of the plug.

9.) You will need to remove the new wires from the supplied connector on the new harness and modify them to work with the stock connector. Using your small flat blade screwdriver work the screwdriver in on top of the new wiring connectors. A little downward pressure may be necessary to release the tab that holds the connectors in place. You will have three wires, white and blue and black OR white and red and black.

10.) The blade connectors on the new har-ness are too large to fit into the stock plug. Using your wire cutters cut the existing flat blade connectors off the white and blue or white and red wires of the new harness. Remove the outer sleeve from the wires with your wire strippers. Fit the exposed wire into the 14GA male spade connectors and crimp the wire into the connectors with your

crimping tool. Shield the wires with shrink tubing to protect them. The black wire is a ground, we put a loop terminal on it and ran that wire back thru the core support and grounded it with the other black ground wires in step 21. This could be connected to a ground anywhere, however.

11.) Plug the white (high beam) and blue (low beam), or white (high beam) and red (low beam) wires into the stock connector at the core support.

The supplied plug for the headlights is much too big to fit thru the stock hole in the core support and inner fender. You can run this wire two ways. Using a hole saw, cut a new hole in the core support filler panel and inner fender large enough for the plug to pass thru OR you can do what we did and take apart the plug, run the wires, and reassemble. We didn’t want to cut additional holes.

12.) You will need to remove the wires in the new headlight socket from the socket so they can be run through the core support. Push back the blue cover to expose the connector.

(Depending on the harness you are using there may be no blue cover.) Use your small flat blade screwdriver on the tab on the top of the connector, like you did in step 9, to loosen the wires from the connector. Then, using a shape knife or razor blade carefully cut the blue covering so you can remove the wires. Mark on the connector which wires you are removing from which socket. You will have a blue, and white or yellow and blue. You do not have to remove the ground (black) wire. Put the connector and blue cover aside, you will reassemble in step 17.

13.) Re-install the sub headlight buckets into the main headlight buckets in the reverse of how you removed them. Re-install the headlight buckets. Don’t forget the headlight bucket to fender gasket.

14.) Route the wires you removed from the new headlight sockets through the grommets in the filler panel and inner fender and into the headlight bucket through the back.

15.) Route the passenger side of the har-ness under the core support upper bar and zip tie it to the existing wires.

16.) Thread the passenger side wires through the core support and inner fender grommets like you did on the driver side in step 14.

17.) Reassemble the headlight plug putting the wires back in their proper places; just snap them back into place. If you have the ceramic plug, slide the blue cover back in place and tape it up with electrical tape.

18.) Install the ring around the new headlight and line up the three tabs on the headlight with the slots in the sub bucket. Then line up the tab on the sub bucket with the slot in the retaining ring and hook the spring into the retaining ring. Re-install the headlight bezels.

Now you will mount the relays, ground the system and connect to a power source. As mentioned before there are two harnesses, one with an inline fuse, which we used in this article, and one with two 30AMP fusible links. If you are wiring up the harness with the fusible links you may have to replace the fusible links with longer ones or extend the harness another way. We used a hot wire on the horn relay for our power source, you could extend the power wires and hook them directly to the battery as outlined in the instructions that comes with the harness. The power wire in the harness is not long enough for a 55-57 Chevy unless you get power from the horn relay.

hole in the core support filler panel to mount your relays. Depending on the kit you will either have clear relays or black. If you have the clear, we drilled 2 13/64" holes in a spare (Danchuk #639) moulding clip, mounted the relays to that and mounted the assembly to the core support. Nice and clean. If you have the black relays you can do the same thing or use the supplied bracket and hardware.

20.) Using your wire cutter, remove the ex-isting loop end on the red power wire and replace it with one that is smaller and fits better on the horn relay terminal. Hook the red power wire to where the red wire is on the relay.

21.) Now you will ground the system. The black wires that come off the plugs that go to the new headlight bulbs need to be grounded as well as the black wire from Step 10. Either use the existing hole in the core support filler panel or drill a new one with your 13/64" bit. Use a #10 sheet metal screw and put a #10 star washer under the wire connector ends. They will bite into the metal to assure a good ground. You may have to replace the loop end like you did in step 20 for a clean fit. Tighten the screw with your flat blade screwdriver.

22.) Install some wire covering over the wires, reconnect the battery, and you are done!

That’s it. This photo shows you the contrast between the stock light, left, and the new Xenon light, right. Pretty drastic if you ask us, and well worth the time and effort. This takes care of the seeing part of our story…next time we will deal with the being seen part, we install a full set of LED tail and park lights. Till then…..

Art and Dan Danchuk have had a love affair with cars long before they were even teenagers. So it is no surprise that over the years they have amassed quite a col-lection. From Dan’s Model A’s with juice brakes to Art’s 1970 big block Chevelle, the Corvettes and, of course, the Tri-5’s. Their collection of cars is quite diverse and spans many, many different years and models. In 2013 there are two cars that were added to the collection that deserve some attention. A 1957 Chevy Nomad that is an original Fuelie car and a 1955 Chevy convertible that Art just finished restoring.

The 1957 Nomad was originally restored to 100 Point perfection by a very close friend of Art and Dan, Eric Vrem. Eric probably knew more about Nomads than anyone else on the planet. He was a member of the Chevy Nomad Association since it’s inception and was also a member of the National Nomad Club.

Eric owned the car since 1959, a present for his wife at the time. They used it as a daily driver and Eric would race it on weekends. In the late 90’s Eric decided it was time to bring the car back to original, and a frame off restoration was begun using the NOS parts Eric had been collecting for the car since 1960. This Nomad was his passion and he spent years restoring it to the pristine condition you see in these photos. Eric passed away in 2011, not long after the car was finished.

Before he died he told his

son that the car should go to Art and Dan

if they wanted it, they had first right of refusal. The Danchuk brothers purchased the car in mid 2013. It will be parked with the other cars on display in the Danchuk Museum located inside the Danchuk Manufacturing building in Santa Ana, California.

The car is painted Matador Red with a red vinyl and cloud pattern cloth interior and black carpet. It rides on original steel wheels with Bel Air hubcaps and a set of Goodyear 7.50 x 14 bias ply tires with wide whites, the look of the times. All the original gauges were refurbished and the car still has the original radio and clock, both still work.

What really makes this Nomad special is the power train. This car sports an original 283 with the optional Rochester Fuel Injec-tion, rated at 283 hp, and an original cast iron powerglide. The fuelie engine makes it very rare and mated with the automatic…well, they are very few and far between.

A beautiful car and a testament to the talents of Mr. Eric Vrem. If you are ever in Santa Ana, go by Danchuk and have a look. You won’t be disappointed.

The Latest and Greatest Additions to the Danchuk Classic Car Collection

Now, the 55 convertible! This car is all Art Danchuk and was built to be a daily driver. Art purchased this car from his friend, Harold Drake, around 2009-10 and immediately started a frame off restoration. The body and frame were media blasted and the frame went off to be powdercoated black. Our auto/body shop massaged the body to perfection. It is 100% steel, no fillers were used. When the body was perfect, it was shot a flawless PPG Harvest Gold and India Ivory paint.

On the interior, Art decided to go with a period correct custom two-tone tan/brown with tuck and roll inserts and tan stitching which was done by Milton Bito of Milton’s Auto Upholstery in Santa Ana, California. Beige Daytona carpet from CARS was installed to finish things off.

The original gauges were refurbished and an under the dash gauge panel was installed to keep track of the vitals on the 327. A Custom Autosound USA-630 stereo assures Art will have something to listen to while sitting in traffic on the 405 freeway.

Originally the car came with the 265 and a powerglide. Art wanted a little more in the engine compartment and an updated transmission for those long rides down Pacific Coast Highway. Now the ‘55 runs a 1968 327, decked out to look totally original, and an Art Carr modified TH-200-4R.

a ‘55 ConvertibleThe suspension and brakes were completely rebuilt and are all original down to the Treadle-Vac power brake unit. The car rides on stock steel 15" wheels and Diamond Back Classic 205-75-15 wide white wall tires. The wheels are decked out with the prettiest set of wire wheel covers you have ever seen, the perfect finishing touch for this beautifully restored classic.
