the opener four straight years from 1994 through 1997.

    MOUNTAIN WEST STANDINGSSTORYLINES

n San Diego State head coach Rocky Long has won his last three games against teams from the Pac-12

Conference. He guided the Aztecs to a 42-24 win over Washington State last season. That victory

snapped the schools 17-game losing streak in Pac-12 games. Prior to coming to The Mesa, Long guidedNew Mexico to wins over Arizona in 2008 (36-28 in Albuquerque, N.M.) and 2007 (29-27 in Tucson,

    Ariz.).

n SDSU opens the 2012 campaign after advancing to bowl games each of the last two seasons (PoinsettiaBowl in 2010 and New Orleans Bowl in 2011). San Diego State has never gone to bowl games in three

    consecutive seasons.

n The Aztecs play seven home games in 2012, which ties for the programs highest number since 1976.

SDSU plays its next three games at home (Army, North Dakota and San Jose State).

n San Diego State has won its last two season openers - both at home - dating back to a 2009 loss at

UCLA in the lidlifter. The Aztecs have dropped their last 10 openers that have been played on the road.

The last time SDSU opened a season with a win away from home was in 1981, when it defeated Col-orado State, 30-14.

n San Diego State enters the opener having won three consecutive road games. It is the first three-game

road winning streak for the Aztecs since 2000 (longest streak in 12 years). A win would make it thelongest streak since 1980-81.

n Dating back to last season, SDSU is playing its third consecutive game in a stadium that houses an

NFL team. San Diego State ended last season playing Fresno State at Qualcomm Stadium and facedLouisiana-Lafayette in the Superdome in the New Orleans Bowl. After this game, the Aztecs play their

next three games at Qualcomm Stadium, making it six straight games in NFL venues. A Sept. 29 trip

to Fresno State will snap the NFL venue streak at six.n Despite serving as an assistant coach at SDSU for two seasons (2009-10), Rocky Long opens the 2012

campaign as the second winningest coach in Mountain West Conference history. Long has 70 wins

while a member of the league, trailing only TCUs Gary Patterson (77 wins). With TCU no longer in the

league, Long needs seven victories to tie the record and eight to break it. The other nine active coachesin the league have a combined 75 wins while their teams have been a member of the conference.

n Entering the 2012 football season, San Diego State has compiled the nations highest winning percent-

age in combined football and mens basketball during the past two seasons. The Aztecs are a combined77-20 (79.4 percent) in the two sports since the beginning of the 2010 football season. See chart

n Adding the success of the womens basketball program at SDSU, which has advanced to NCAA Tour-

nament play in two of the last three seasons, further demonstrates the departments overall success.

Combining football, mens basketball and womens basketball records from last season and San Diego

State owns the sixth-best winning percentage in the country, trailing only Baylor, Stanford, Kentucky,Brigham Young and Notre Dame. See chart above

n The Aztecs have posted a 17-9 record over the past two seasons after needing 57 games to claim 17

victories prior to the 2010 campaign (SDSU went 17-40 during that stretch from the fifth game of the2005 season through the end of 2009 campaign). The 17-9 record the last two seasons is tied with

Baylor, Brigham Young, Kansas State and Toledo for the 29th-best record in the country over that two-

    year span.

n SDSU has only five seniors listed as starters on the current depth chart, three on offense (RG Nike Em-

bernate, C Alec Johnson, QB Ryan Katz) and two on defense (CB Leon McFadden and CBJosh Wade).

    OFFENSIVE QUICK HITS

n San Diego State returns seven starters on offense from last seasons 2011 team that scored 387 points, the second highest total for an Aztec squad in the last 15 seasons.

n SDSU has four offensive players appearing on preseason watch lists for the top player at their position

in the country - junior tight end Gavin Escobar (John Mackey Award Watch List (TE), Rotary Lombardi

Award Watch List (lineman)), senior center Alec Johnson (Rimington Trophy Watch List (center)), seniorrunning back Walter Kazee (Doak Walker Award Watch List (RB)) and sophomore wide receiver Colin

vs. Air Force on Oct. 21, 2006) and Ryan Lindley (49 games during the 2008-09-10-11 seasons

Senior Oregon State-transfer Ryan Katz will become the fourth SDSU player to start at the position in

the last 66 games when he takes the opening snap in Seattle.n Although Katz will be making his first appearance as an Aztec at Washington, he comes to The Mesa

with a wealth of experience. A native of Santa Monica, Calif., Katz started 14 consecutive games for thBeavers, including all 12 games of the 2010 campaign. Among his highlights, was a 17-for-24, two

touchdown performance in an upset victory over USC during his sophomore campaign.

n Last season, due to graduation and injury, San Diego States combined receiving core ended the cam

paign with four career catches for 39 yards. That has changed significantly in 12 months, as SDSU enters the 2012 campaign with a Bletnikoff Award candidate and preseason all-Mountain West Conferenc

selection in junior Colin Lockett (58 catches, 970 yards, 8 TDs in 2011), a former walk-on who had

five or more catches six times last season, including three times in his final four games, in junior DylanDenso (49 catches, 634 yards and 3 TDs in 2011) and highly-decorated USC transfer senior Brice

Butler (41 catches, 554 yards and 3 TDs at USC).

n Although San Diego State look to replace third-round NFL Draft selection Ronnie Hillman, the Aztecshave quality depth at the position. Sophomore Adam Muema rushed for 119 yards and two touchdown

against 10th-ranked Boise State in a game last season. In 2011, he rushed for 253 yards on 42 carrie

for a 6.0 yards per carry average in just six games. In his first 42 career carries, he has amassed moreyards rushing than Hillman did in the same amount of carries. Also in the backfield, is senior Walte

Kazee. A career 1,000-yard rusher, Kazees season was cut short last season when he suffered a sea

son-ending knee injury at Colorado State.

n The offensive line is anchored by two returning starters - senior center Alec Johnson and senior righguard Nik Embernate. Joining the two seniors on the offensive line is converted tight end, now left guard

junior Bryce Quigley, junior left guardJapeth Gordon and sophomore right tackle Zach Dilley. The only

new member of the coaching staff, former SDSU offensive lineman Mike Schmidt, leads the unit.

n San Diego State has gone 64 games without suffering a shutout (Nov. 18, 2006 at TCU). That is th

only time the Aztecs have been shutout in their last 159 games.

    DEFENSIVE QUICK HITS

n SDSU returns six starters off a squad that has continually gotten better under the direction of second-year head coach Rocky Long, who is in his fourth season as the defensive coordinator. Statistically on

of the nations worst units less than five years ago, Long has transitioned the San Diego State defenseinto one of the most feared units on the West Coast. Below is a look at the progress made under Longsdirection.

n The Aztecs are led on defense by Mountain West preseason defensive player of the year, senior corner

back Leon McFadden. McFadden is on the preseason watch list for the Bronko Nagurski Trophy (besdefensive player) and the Jim Thorpe Award (DB). McFadden, who has been a first-team all-Mountain

West selection the past two seasons, is looking to become the schools fourth three-time first-team al

league selection, joining Marshall Faulk, Kabeer Gbaja-Biamila and Kirk Morrison.

n Plenty of other defensive players received preseason attention from at least one publication. Junior Azteback Nat Berhe and sophomore linebackerJake Fely were among the players getting attention. Berhe

is the top retuning tackler of the 2011 squad, and has 106 stops and three interceptions in his tw

seasons. He posted a career-high 10 tackles in the R+L New Orleans Bowl last season. In his first fuseason on the field, Fely had 55 tackles, 5.5 sacks and forced three fumbles.

n SDSU has forced a turnover i 13 of their last 14 games, including three or more in five times in the las

    12 games.

n San Diego State has allowed a total of 124 yards rushing in its last two games combined. The Aztec de

fense has held its opponent to 100 yards or less on the ground in three of the last six games.

LONG HAS BEST DEBUT SEASON IN PROGRAM HISTORY

n Rocky Long, the schools 18th head coach, became the first San Diego State coach to lead the team toa bowl game in his inaugural season.

n Rocky Long posted an 8-5 record in his first season as head coach with the Aztecs. That is the highestvictory total in a SDSU head coaching debut season since Denny Stolz finished 8-4 in his first year in1986.

n With eight first-year wins, Rocky Long had one more coaching victory in his inaugural season as theprevious two San Diego State coaches combined (Brady Hoke went 4-8 in 2009 and Chuck Long was

    3-9 in 2006).

n Last season marked the third time in Rocky Longs head coaching career that his team has won at leasteight games (also 2007 and 2003). His squads have won six or more games in eight of his last nine

    seasons as a head coach.

n Last year, Long helped guide the Aztecs to their first 3-0 start in 30 years, ended the programs 19-

game losing streak to Pac-10/12 foes, snapped SDSUs 23-game losing streak to automatic qualifying

BCS teams and gave the program its first win in the Eastern time zone since 1972, all in the openingmonth of the season.

n San Diego State finished the 2011 season above .500 for only the second time in the last 13 seasons.n The Aztecs won eight games in a campaign for just the second time in the last 15 seasons.n Long has 73 victories while coaching teams in the Mountain West. That is the second-highest total in

    the history of the conference.

SAN DIEGO STATE 2012 ACCOLADES SDSU TABBED TO FINISH FIFTH BY LEAGUE MEDIA

n The San Diego State football team is picked to finish fifth in the Mountain West preseason poll, whichwas released on July 24. The Aztecs had 173 points in the 2012 preseason poll, which is voted on bymedia representatives who cover the conference.

The fifth-place projection is SDSU's second highest in the last eight years. Last season, San Diego Statewas selected fourth and finished fourth. It marked the sixth time in the last seven years that the Aztecs finished at or higher than their projected finish. SDSU also picked up one of the 30 first-place votes, a firstin its 14-year history of the MW.

Boise State was picked to win the league with 296 points, including 27 first-place votes.
