WSU-BYU SERIES HISTORY: Washington State and BYU have met three times with WSU owning a 1-2 record in the series that includes the inaugural meeting that came in the 1981 Holiday Bowl. Led by Jim McMahon’s three touchdown passes in his final collegiate game, Brigham Young posted a 38-36 victory in the Holiday Bowl. In 1989, the two teams combined for over 1,000 yards in offense while WSU received a four-touchdown performance by Steve Broussard en route to a 46-41 road victory. In the 1990 meeting, also played in Provo, both offenses again put on a show but Brigham Young picked up a 50-36 win behind Ty Detmer’s 448 yards and five touchdown passes. NEXT WEEK: WSU will host Eastern Washington University next Saturday, Sept. 8 at Noon in Martin Stadium. The Cougars will make their Pac-12 Networks debut, with Pac-12 Washington set to tele- vise the first meeting between the two schools since 1908. MIKE LEACH AGAINST HIS ALMA MATER: Head coach Mike Leach has never faced BYU on the football field. Leach attended Brigham Young University and graduated with honors in 1983. Leach owns a career record of 84-43 and made 10 bowl appearances during his 10 seasons at Texas Tech University (2000-09). COUGARS IN SEASON OPENERS: Washington State owns a 69-42-5 record in season openers in their 116-year history. When opening the season on the road, WSU is 20-27-3 all-time. The last BCS road win to open the season was against New Mexico (21-17) in 2004. WSU is 77-34-3 all-time in home openers, including games in Pullman, Spokane and Seattle. Since 1990 the Cougars boast a 15-7 record in home debuts, and are 25-12 dating back to the start of the 1975 season. Head coach Mike Leach is 9-1 in season openers and has won seven straight. WSU QUICK HITS: • WSU head coaches own a 24-6-1 all-time record in their first game as the Cougars head man. • When playing on a Thursday, the Cougars have won five straight regular season games but have only won three straight overall due to the loss to Michigan in the 1998 Rose Bowl that also came on a Thursday. The 46-41 win over BYU in 1989 was on a Thursday. • This will be the first time WSU is playing on ESPN or an ESPN network, since 2006 when ESPN2 car- ried the Cougars loss at Auburn but the last time on ESPN, WSU posted a 55-21 victory over Nevada in Reno. WSU is 7-5 all-time when playing on an ESPN network, including four straight on ESPN. • Against nonconference teams from the mountain time zone, the Cougars have won eight straight games. When playing against nonconference teams in the mountain time zone, WSU has won four straight. COLLEGE GAMEDAY RECORD: In addition to Chris Fowler, Kirk Herbstreit and Lee Corso, ESPN’s College Gameday has had another constant – the WSU flag, which this weekend will be making its 118th consecutive appearance on the weekly show, dating back to the beginning of the 2004 season. Two flags – Ol’ Crimson and Whitey – have been flown in the background of the Gameday set by dozens of friends and alumni. WSU recognized the Gameday flag wavers in a pregame ceremony prior to the Montana State game last season. In addition to the flags that fly, there is a traveling flag signed by the holders after each episode. The traveling flag is retired after each season, the first of which is hanging in WSU’s Alumni Center. The Davey O’Brien National Quarterback Award is presented annually to the nation’s best college quarterback and is the oldest and most prestigious national quarterback award. Coming off an im-pressive sophomore campaign, Tuel appeared in three games while battling through injuries last season. As a sophomore in 2010, Tuel threw for 2,780 yards and 18 touchdowns while starting all 12 games.

FURNEY NAMED TO LOU GROZA AWARD WATCH LIST: Junior kicker Andrew Furney was named to The Lou Groza Award watch. Furney was named one of 20 semifinalists to the same award during the 2011 campaign. COUGARS GARNER ALL-PAC-12 ACCOLADES IN 2011: Linebacker Travis Long and wide receiver Marquess Wilson each earned second-team All-Pac-12 honors in 2011. Offensive linemen John Ful-lington and cornerback Damante Horton each received honorable mention recognition. Long picked up all-conference honors for the third consecutive season after making 42 tackles, 31 solo includ-ing a team-best 12 tackles-for-loss, good for a tie for fifth in the conference. The Spokane native started all 12 games and also led the Cougs with four sacks. Wilson picked up his second career all-conference accolade after setting WSU single-season records for receptions (82) and receiving yards (1,388) while tying Jason Hill for the second most touchdown catches with 12. The Tulare, Ca-lif. native posted six 100-yard performances and was the only player in the conference to eclipse the 200-yard twice (236 - at San Diego State, 223 - Arizona State). Wilson led the conference in receiving yards per game (115.7), was second in touchdowns and receiving yards, and was third in catches. Fullington earned his first career all-conference honor after starting all 12 games at left guard as a sophomore while Horton earned his first career all-conference honor after tying for the conference lead with four interceptions, returning one for a touchdown. The junior also finished with 31 tackles, three pass break ups and two forced fumbles.

STATISTICALLY SPEAKING, COUGS WERE MUCH IMPROVED: In 2011, WSU’s offense and defense finished far ahead of the past two seasons. Below is a breakdown of the offense and defense for the past three seasons following 10 games of each campaign. National ranking in parentheses:

2011 2010 2009Total Offense 422.42 (33) 323.09 (96) 256.36 (119)Total Defense 409.58 (82) 457.55 (115) 516.64 (120)Scoring Offense 29.83 (45) 18.82 (109) 13.09 (119)Scoring Defense 31.75 (95) 35.91(111) 39.27 (118)

HALLIDAY NAMED PAC-12 PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Quarterback Connor Halliday was named the Bank of the West Pac-12 Offensive Player of the Week after coming off the bench to throw for 494 yards and four touchdowns in the Cougars’ 37-27 win over Arizona State in 2001. His passing total was the second-highest in school history and shattered the previous freshman mark of 385 yards, held by Drew Bledsoe. Halliday’s 494 yards also marked the highest total by a Pac-12 quarterback this season, the 10th-best passing total in conference history and the most yards ever thrown by a conference freshman. Halliday is the second Cougar to earn conference player of the week honors this season as senior linebacker Alex Hoffman-Ellis was named the defensive player of the week following WSU’s victory at Colorado.

WILLIAM “LONE STAR” DIETZ SELECTED TO COLLEGE FOOTBALL HALL OF FAME: Former Washing-ton State football coach William “Lone Star” Dietz was selected to the College Football Hall of Fame 2012 Divisional Class by the National Football Foundation in May. With a lengthy career spanning many schools and decades, William “Lone Star” Dietz provided a foundation for football success at many universities across the nation. He served as the head coach for 19 seasons at seven in-stitutions and enjoyed a distinguished career as an assistant coach, helping College Football Hall of Fame coach Pop Warner prepare Stanford for two Rose Bowl appearances. Truly a legend in his own time, “Lone Star” Dietz had a fantastic career as Washington State’s football coach from 1915-17. His teams posted a 17-2-1 record with 15 shutouts. In his inaugural year, he guided WSC (Washington State College) to the Rose Bowl and a 14-0 shutout of Ivy League foe Brown. That team was 7-0 and allowed just one touchdown and one field goal all year. A year later, WSC was 4-2 and his 1917 team finished 6-0-1 while yielding three points to opponents, a field goal in the second game of the season.

40TH ANNIVERSARY OF MARTIN STADIUM: The 2012 Cougars football season marks the 40-year anniversary of Martin Stadium. In April 1970, a fire destroyed the south stands and press box of then-Rogers Field. For the next two seasons, the WSU football team played its home games at Joe Albi Stadium in Spokane. In the interim, a one-million dollar fund drive began after the decision was made to rebuild the stands rather than relocate or build an entirely new stadium. WSU launched a two-phase renovation plan that created a two-tiered structure that held 17,500, replacing the old seating capacity of 10,000 and increasing the total seating capacity to 30,000. Dan Martin, a Los Angeles businessman, gave $250,000 to the project with the stipulation the stadium be renamed after his father, Clarence D. Martin, governor of Washington state from 1933-40. Although the look and amenities have changed, Martin Stadium has been the home of the Washington State Cougars since 1972. The $80 million Cougar Football Project, which began in Nov., 2011, replaces the old press box on the south stands with a new structure that includes a new press box, club seats, loge boxes, luxury suites and a club room.

HOLIDAY BOWL#14 BRIGHAM YOUNG 38 - WASHINGTON STATE 36

SAN DIEGO - Three games in one was more than the 52,000-plus fans at San Diego’s Jack Murphy Stadium paid for, but three games is what they saw as the Brigham Young Cougars held on to defeate the Wash-ington State Cougars 38-36. The BYU squad won the first game, a 31-minute affair that generated a 31-7 lead for the team from Provo. The next 25 minutes just as convincingly belonged to WSU 29-7. In the end, however, the game belonged to BYU as much for de-fense as anything. They stopped the Pullman team with just over three minutes to play by forcing a punt, then ran out the clock to preserve the win. Jim McMahon, in his last collegiate game, completed 27 of 43 passes for 342 yards and three touchdowns. More importantly, he did not throw an interception. The WSU Cougars used the running of Don LaBomme and quarterback Ricky Turner to baffl e the BYU team, especially in the second half. Turner gained 92 yards in 12 carries and scored twice, while LaBomme added 79 yards in 14 carries and scored once. Robert Williams and Mike Martin also scored for the Cougars. WSU’s failure on a two-point conversion late in the third quarter, an in-terception BYU’s Ron Holmoe returned 35 yards for a touchdown on the third play of the third quarter, and a key sack of Casper on WSU’s last possession loomed big in a game that had numerous turning points.

PROVO, Utah - A national television audience watched ESPN’s telecast of the WSU-BYU game last just over four hours and generate 1,036 yards in total offense, with the visiting Cougars from WSU prevailing 46-41 in one of the wildest passing games ever at BYU’s Cou-gar Stadium. WSU led after the first quarter 10-7, fell behind at halftime 21-17, regained the lead in the third quarter 33-28, expanded the advantage to 46-28, then held on to win 46-41, despite outscoring BYU 29-7 in the first 26 minutes of the second half. Jason Hanson connected on four field goals, including 46 and 52-yard kicks and a school record 58-yarder, while Steve Broussard rushed for three scores caught a 66-yard TD pass to finish with four touchdowns. WSU’s de-fense bent under the pressure of BYU’s passing attack, but came up with three interceptions, including one returned 87 yards by Jay Languein. BYU’s Ty Detmer completed 34 of 53 passes for 537 yards, but the BYU Cougars generated just 71 yards rushing to finish with

608 yards in total offense. WSU had 428 yards in total offense. Brad Gossen passed WSU to the win using big plays, a 64-yarder to Tim Stallworth on the third play of the game, and the 66-yarder to Broussard coming out of the backfield. Gossen ended his second career start hitting 14 of 27 passes for 317 yards. He was inter-cepted once and that a tipped pass. The WSU Cougar defense came up with five sacks, plus the three picks. The game lasted 4:04, with 64,310 the announced at-tendance.

SEPTEMBER 15, 1990BRIGHAM YOUNG 50, WASHINGTON STATE 36

PROVO, Utah - WSU had Brigham Young on the ropes for three quarters, but in the end the home Cougars of Provo had too much offense, winning 50-36. WSU dominated the first half holding BYU to just one yard rushing and forcing three turnovers in the opening 30 minutes. BYU scored once in the third quarter, then generated 36 points and over 300 yards in total offense in the fourth quarter. Their assault included nearly 200 yards passing and over 100 yards rushing. WSU should have put the game out of reach in the first half. Give the BYU defense credit for stopping WSU four times inside the 30 yard line, including drives that stalled at the four and six-yard lines. The crowd of 65,848 was si-lent for the first two quarters, but by the time the fourth quarter arrived, the BYU throng had plenty to cheer about. WSU’s rushing game, after hibernating for two games, came alive, with Shaumbe Wright-Fair gaining 125 yards and Rich Swinton 35. Brad Gossen had a fine day for WSU, completing 25 of 42 passes for 323 yards and two touchdowns, with no interceptions. BYU’s Heisman Trophy candidate Ty Detmer completed 32 of 50 passes for 448 yards and five touchdowns. He was intercepted twice, with Ron Ricard picking off one pass and Alvin Dunn racing 25 yards for a touchdown with a second WSU interception. WSU was guilty of 15 penalties for 128 yards, including 10 for 75 yards in the second half.

2012 WASHINGTON STATE FOOTBALL10

Head Coach

First Season

MIKE LEACH

Washington State University announced Nov. 30, 2011 that Mike Leach has been named the Cougars’ head football coach.

“I asked athletic director Bill Moos to select the best head football coach in the country and I am convinced that he has done exactly that,” said WSU President Elson S. Floyd.

“This is an exciting day for Washington State University and Cougar football,” said Moos. “I have spoken about the need to re-energize our fan base and take Cougar football to the next level. I believe the hiring of Mike Leach accomplishes both of those goals. His credentials speak for themselves.”

Leach brings a proven record of winning to Pullman. In 10 seasons as a head coach, all at Texas Tech (2000-09) his program earned 10 bowl bids. In addition, the Susanville, Calif., native who was raised in Cody, Wyo., recorded a school-record 84 victories during his tenure.

Leading the most prolific passing offense in the country, Leach received three national coach of the year awards in 2008 - the Woody Hayes Award, Howie Long/Fieldturf Coach of the Year, and George Munger Award. His offense spreads the field with his exciting brand of football and guided Texas Tech to six NCAA passing titles and three total offense titles during his 10 seasons in Lubbock. Leach’s offense produced school records in nearly every passing category in 2000, his first season with the Red Raiders, but surpassed those numbers in each of his next nine seasons.

During Leach’s time in Lubbock, Texas, the Red Raiders increased their yards per game by more than 150 and averaged nearly 20 points more per outing. In the passing game, Texas Tech threw for about 300 yards more per game in the decade Leach was at the helm.

Leach led Texas Tech to one of the most memorable seasons in school history in 2008 as the team set a program record with 11 regular-season wins en route to an 11-2 record. The win total tied the mark, set previously by the 1953 and 1973 Red Raider squads. Numerous accolades poured in from across the country as an unprecedented four players earned first-team All-America status, in addition to Leach’s three coach of the year honors. Quarterback Graham Harrell, offensive tackle Rylan Reed and offensive guard Brandon Carter each garnered first-team honors, while wide receiver Michael Crabtree was honored as a unanimous consensus All-American for the second-straight season.

On the field in 2008, the Red Raiders led the nation in passing for the sixth time in Leach’s ten seasons and ranked among the top five in total offense. Harrell finished his storied career second on the NCAA career passing yardage list with 15,793 yards. Harrell also broke the career NCAA passing touchdowns mark with 134.

The Texas Tech program has established itself as one of the nation’s leading producers of productive quarterbacks since the 2000 season. Harrell threw for 4,555 yards in his debut as the starter in 2006 and became the sixth player and third Red Raider in NCAA history to throw for 5,000 yards in a season with his 5,705-yard effort in 2007 and 5,111 yards last season. He also is the third quarterback under Leach to win nine games in a season and the first Red Raider in history to win 11 in a regular season. Former quarterback Kliff Kingsbury in 2002 and Cody Hodges in 2005 each posted nine-win seasons during their careers, while 2003 and 2004 signal callers B.J. Symons and Sonny Cumbie each won eight games in their respective seasons as the starter.

The Red Raiders improved their total offensive numbers from 324.8 yards per game to 531.0 yards per game since Leach’s arrival. Leach’s first nine seasons at Tech rank as the top nine all-time in total offense, while scoring went from 23 points per game in 1999 to a school-record 43.8 points in 2008. The most significant increase was in the passing game, where the Red Raiders averaged 475.3 yards per game in 2008 compared to 175.4 yards in 1999.

The running game flourished under Leach as well. Former Red Raider Taurean Henderson holds the NCAA career record for receptions by a running back. The Red Raiders’ 28 total rushing scores in 2008 were the most for a Tech team since the 1993 team scored 30. Despite Tech’s offense revolving around the pass, Leach did a tremendous job of incorporating the running back position into the mix. Henderson finished his career with 303 receptions, which ranks first in NCAA history among running backs and fourth overall.

The Red Raiders were not known solely for their play on the scoring side of the ball. The Texas Tech defense also flourished during Leach’s 10 seasons. Texas Tech held opponents without an offensive touchdown a dozen times under Leach, including seven shutouts. Three of the whitewashes came in 2000 when the Red Raiders tied for the national lead.

The play of the special teams also improved with each season. Former placekicker Alex Trlica holds the NCAA record with 233 career extra points and another record for extra points made without a miss. He finished with 377 career points, which ranks among the top 10 in NCAA history among kickers. While leading the Red Raiders to 76 wins in his nine seasons, Leach is the only coach in school history to lead ten teams to bowl games.

Although Leach’s presence was felt throughout the team, it also was beneficial for the players individually. In addition to picking up the Sammy Baugh Trophy in 2007, Harrell was the recipient of the National Football Foundation and College Football Hall of Fame’s Post-Graduate Scholarship and was one of 15 players selected as a candidate for the prestigious Draddy Award, the academic Heisman. Harrell also ranked fourth in the 2008 Heisman voting, while Crabtree was fifth. Symons was the second Tech quarterback to receive The Touchdown Club of Columbus’ Sammy Baugh Trophy (Kingsbury in 2002).

Kingsbury, a 2002 All-Big 12 first-team quarterback and sixth-round draft pick of the New England Patriots, led the Big 12 Conference in several passing categories during his final three seasons and was a Heisman Trophy candidate in 2002. He also was named the Verizon Academic All-American of the Year for football and was awarded an $18,000 postgraduate scholarship by the National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame.

In 2004, inside receiver Trey Haverty became Tech’s first Associated Press All-American since Montae Reagor in 1998, when he was selected to the third team. Free safety Dwayne Slay earned first-team All-America honors from Sports Illustrated in 2005, marking the first in seven seasons. Slay was one of the country’s

most punishing tacklers that year and led the conference and finished second nationally with eight forced fumbles.

Leach has coached several players who have gone on to the NFL. While at Tech, 18 players have been drafted and 21 others have signed free agent contracts. In the spring of 2009, four players were selected among the first four rounds of the NFL Draft, marking the most successful draft for Texas Tech in the Leach era. Crabtree became the highest draft pick at No. 10, since Gabe Rivera in 1983. Crabtree, selected by the San Francisco 49ers, is the highest drafted Tech receiver since Dave Parks went No. 1 overall in 1964.

Safety Darcel McBath was selected by the Denver Broncos in the second round, while offensive lineman Louis Vasquez was taken in the third by San Diego. Defensive end Brandon Williams went to the Dallas Cowboys in the fourth.

The program made strides academically as well under Leach. During his 10 years, Tech was recognized as one of the nation’s top institutions for consistently being above a 70 percent graduation rate, according to the American Football Coaches Association.

Prior to coming on board at Texas Tech, Leach, in just one season at Oklahoma, directed a Sooner offense that went from one of the worst in the Big 12 Conference to one of the best. Under Leach’s tutelage, Josh Heupel was named 1999 Big 12 Offensive Newcomer of the Year. For his efforts, Leach was nominated for the 1999 Broyles Award as the top assistant coach in the country.

Leach guided an Oklahoma offense that went from 11th in the Big 12 in 1998 to first in 1999 and 101st in the nation to 11th. In just one year, OU’s total offense numbers improved from 293.3 to 427.2 yards per game.

The rise in passing and scoring offense categories is just as impressive. Oklahoma went from last to first in the Big 12 in passing offense in one year, from 107th in the country to ninth. Under Leach, the Sooners improved from 109.9 yards passing per game to 321.7 yards per game.

In 1998, Oklahoma was last in the Big 12 and 101st in the country in scoring offense at 16.7 points per game. In 1999, the Sooners improved to second in the league and eighth in the country in scoring at 36.8 points per game, an increase of just over 20 points per game.

Under Leach, the Oklahoma offense set six Big 12 Conference and 17 OU records. The Sooners were one of only two schools in the nation to have six players with 20 or more receptions in 1999.

Prior to joining Bob Stoops’ Oklahoma staff, Leach served as offensive coordinator for Hal Mumme at the University of Kentucky and Valdosta (Ga.) State University. For two years at Kentucky under Mumme, Leach coached the Kentucky “Air Raid” offense that was one of the most explosive in Southeastern Conference history. Under Mumme and Leach, the Kentucky offense set six NCAA records, 41 Southeastern Conference records and 116 school records in 22 games.

Leach’s Kentucky offense featured the talented Tim Couch, who passed for 4,275 yards and 34 touchdowns as a senior and was the top pick of the 1999 NFL Draft.

Named 1996 Division II Offensive Coordinator of the Year by American Football Quarterly magazine, Leach helped Mumme lead Valdosta State to a 40-17-1 record. The 1993 Blazer offense smashed 66 school records, 22 conference records and seven national records. In 1994, Valdosta State advanced to the Division II playoffs with Leach’s offense shattering 80 school records, 35 conference records and seven more national marks.

Leach and Mumme first teamed up at Iowa Wesleyan College in 1989. From 1989 to 1991 Leach served as offensive coordinator and line coach for an offense that led the NAIA in passing yardage one season and finished second the other two. Iowa Wesleyan quarterbacks passed for more than 11,000 yards in Leach’s three seasons and broke 26 national records.

Leach also has made coaching stops in Pori, Finland, where he served as a head coach in the European Football League (1989), as well as one-year stints at College of the Desert (1988) and Cal Poly-San Luis Obispo (1987).

After graduating with honors from BYU in 1983, Leach earned a master’s degree from the U.S. Sports Academy and his law degree from Pepperdine University, where he graduated in the top one-third of his class.

The oldest of six siblings, Leach and his wife, Sharon, are the parents of four children; Janeen, Kim, Cody and Kiersten.

SAN DIEGO, Calif. – Ronnie Hillman ran for 191 yards and four touchdowns to lead San Diego State to a 42-24 win over Washington State. Marshall Lobbestael threw touchdown passes of 80 and 78 yards to Marquess Wilson for Washington State (2-1). Lobbestael completed 20 of 42 passes for a career-high 368 yards with three TDs and two interceptions. Hillman, a sophomore, ran 32 times as he scored four rushing touchdowns for the second time in his career. Hillman contributed to 500 yards of total offense for the Aztecs on the day. SDSU quarterback Ryan Lindley threw for 273 yards, but also committed the first two San Diego State turnovers this season with an interception and later fumbling a snap out of the shotgun formation at the Cougars 16-yard line. The Cougars, the nation’s highest-scoring team at 61.5 points per game, scored on its first play from scrimmage, an 80-yard pass to Wilson. Lobbestael later hit Wilson on a 78-yard scoring pass to give Washington State a 24-14 lead early in the third quarter. Lindley passed the 10,000-yard career passing mark with a second-quarter completion. Lindley is second in school history to Todd Santos, who threw for 11,425 yards. Lindley has thrown touchdown passes in 13 straight games, but his lone interception broke a string of 112 pass attempts without one. After the Cougars scored on their first play from scrimmage, San Diego State responded with a score on a 13-yard run by Hillman. Washington State took a 10-7 lead on Andrew Furney’s 48-yard field goal. The Aztecs then went 76 yards in 13 plays with Hillman scoring on a 12-yard run at the end of the first quarter. Lobbestael gave Washington State a 17-14 halftime lead after a 23-yard TD pass to Isiah Barton.

BOULDER, Colo. – Marquess Wilson sped past two defenders and hauled in a 63-yard touchdown pass from Marshall Lobbestael with 1:10 left to lead Washington State to a stunning 31-27 comeback win over Colorado. The Buffaloes were primed for a win in their Pac-12 debut before surrendering two touchdowns in the final 2 1/2 minutes. Lobbestael threw for 376 yards and three touchdowns in leading the Cougars. The Buffaloes led 27-17 with 5:11 left after Rodney Stewart’s 1-yard TD run, which he set up with a 52-yard scamper to the Washington State 21. Lobbestael led Washington State 77 yards in seven plays, hitting Isiah Barton from 19 yards out with 2:35 left to pull the Cougars within a field goal. With three timeouts remaining, Wulff elected to forgo a risky onside kick, and the strategy paid off when the Cougars forced a punt and got the ball back with 1:50 left. This time, they needed just 40 seconds to cover 90 yards. Bottled up for much of the afternoon - 58 yards on five catches - Wilson sped past cornerback Greg Henderson and safety Anthony Perkins and was wide open as he hauled in the pass and raced into the end zone. CU had one more chance, but re-ceiver Paul Richardson was stripped of the ball by cornerback Damante Horton after a 23-yard gain and linebacker C.J. Mizell recovered for Washington State at its 39 with just under a minute left. CU quarterback Tyler Hansen threw touchdown passes of 9 yards to Richardson and 4 yards to Toney Clemons, the latter giving Colorado a 20-10 lead in the third quarter. Lobbestael responded with an 11-yard TD strike to fullback Jared Byers to keep it close. Will Oliver’s third field goal, a 48-yarder as the first half expired, gave Colorado a 13-10 halftime lead. It came just 16 seconds after Andrew Furney tied the game with a 28-yarder following Hansen’s first interception in 133 passes.

PASADENA, Calif. – Kevin Prince threw a go-ahead, 7-yard touchdown pass to Shaq Evans with 3:26 to play, and UCLA rallied from an eight-point deficit in the fourth quarter for a 28-25 victory over Washington State. Prince passed for 173 yards af-ter starter Richard Brehaut broke his leg in the second quarter, mounting two late touchdown drives. Derrick Coleman rushed for two scores, and Josh Smith caught a TD pass for the Bruins. Marshall Lobbestael passed for 235 yards and hit Jared Karstetter and Rickey Galvin for second-half touchdowns. Andrew Abbott intercepted Lobbestael’s final pass near midfield with 2:01 to play, and Smith made an excep-tional catch for a first down while getting hit in the closing seconds, allowing UCLA to run out the clock. Andrew Furney kicked four field goals for the Cougars. After the Cougars settled for three field goals in the first half when their offense stalled inside the UCLA 10, Karstetter scored Washington State’s first touchdown midway through the third quarter. Galvin then caught a fourth-quarter TD pass from Lobbestael, who went 28 for 40. The longtime backup quarterback remained in the Cougars’ starting lineup despite the return of Jeff Tuel, back in uniform after breaking his collarbone in the season opener. Prince immediately sparked the Bruins, connecting with Nel-son Rosario on a 41-yard pass to the goal line, where Coleman scored. Coleman added another short TD on the Bruins’ opening drive of the second half, but UCLA’s fourth personal foul allowed the Cougars to make a short touchdown drive capped by Karstetter’s 8-yard grab over the middle. Lobbestael hit Galvin in stride for a 21-yard TD, but UCLA blocked the extra point and made a swift drive for Smith’s TD catch. Rosario couldn’t hold on to the 2-point conversion throw, keeping Washington State ahead 22-20. Furney hit a 47-yard field goal with 5:49 to play, but Rosario made an electrifying, one-handed 58-yard catch that put the Bruins inside the Washington State 10 moments later. Evans scored on a 7-yard slant, and Rosario caught a 2-point conversion pass, putting UCLA up by three points.

PULLMAN, Wash. – Andrew Luck threw two third-quarter touchdown passes to Levine Toilolo as No. 7 Stanford beat Washington State 44-14 Saturday to extend the nation’s longest winning streak to a school record 14 consecutive games. Stanford (6-0, 4-0 Pac-12) struggled against the Cougars defense before blowing the game open in the second half. Luck completed 23 of 36 passes for 336 yards with four touchdowns and one interception. Washington State (3-3, 1-2) hoped to get a boost from the return of quarterback Jeff Tuel. But they had little success against a Stanford defense that is allowing just 10 points per game. Tuel, who fractured his collarbone on his first series of the season, finally was cleared to play and started the game in place of reserve Marshall Lobbestael. He completed 17 of 30 passes for 145 yards. The Cougars generated 257 yards of total offense in the game. Leading 10-7 after the half, Stanford drove 85 yards on its first possession of the second half, with a 62-yard pass play from Luck to Coby Fleener covering most of the distance. Luck fired a 10-yard touchdown pass to Toilolo for a 17-7 lead. After punting on its next series, Stanford scored on a 62-yard drive late in the third when Luck hit Toilolo for a 26-yard scoring pass and a 24-7 lead. Luck also fired an 8-yard scoring pass to Step-fan Taylor and a 28-yard touchdown pass to Fleener in the fourth. Lobbestael scored on a short run for Washington State in the fourth quarter. In the first half, Jordan Wil-liamson kicked a 23-yard field goal with 1:34 left in the first quarter to give Stanford a 3-0 lead. The Cardinal have not been scored on in the first quarter all season.

SEATTLE, Wash. – Sean Mannion threw for a career high 376 yards and four touch-downs, Malcolm Agnew added 103 yards rushing and Oregon State beat Washing-ton State 44-21 in The Seattle Game. Mannion, a redshirt freshman who took over as Oregon State’s starter in Game 3, threw a pair of scores in the first half, then connected with Joe Halahuni on a 25-yard touchdown in the third quarter as the Beavers ran off 20 unanswered points. Tuel threw for 127 yards and a touchdown, and added another touchdown running, but was sacked three times and took a big hit on an incompletion just before halftime. He was late returning from the locker room at half and was replaced by Marshall Lobbestael, the starter for the first five games of the season. Tuel broke his collarbone in the opener against Idaho State and returned for WSU’s sixth game against Stanford. The Cougars dropped their third straight after a promising 3-1 start to the season and now face the teeth of their schedule with upcoming games at Oregon, California, home for Arizona State and the Apple Cup against rival Washington in the final five weeks of the season. Mannion had touchdown passes of 31 yards to Jordan Jenkins on Oregon State’s opening drive, 12 yards to Brandin Cooks, his third-quarter TD to Halahuni and an 18-yard toss to Clayton York in the fourth quarter to push the Beavers lead back to 20. And when Mannion wasn’t finding open receivers, Agnew was rushing for healthy chunks of yards. Agnew averaged 4.5 yards per carry and had his second 100-yard game of the season. Oregon State entered ranked 107th in the country at running the ball, but finished with 175 yards rushing. Trevor Romaine also kicked three short field goals for the Beavers. Lobbestael finished 10 of 20 for 105 yards and was intercepted in the end zone late in the game. Marquees Wilson had a 20-yard touchdown catch in the first half and Carl Winston rushed for another in the third quarter

EUGENE, Ore. – Freshman De’Anthony Thomas sparked No. 7 Oregon with two second-half touchdowns in a 43-28 victory over Washington State. Darron Thomas returned to start against the Cougars but threw two interceptions in the first half and was replaced by backup Bryan Bennett in the second. Lavasier Tuinei caught two touchdown passes for Oregon. The Ducks have also won 17 straight conference games. De’Anthony Thomas has 11 touchdowns this season, an Oregon record for a true freshman. His second score of the game was a 93-yard kickoff return. Thomas finished with 8-of-13 passing for 153 yards and a score. Bennett completed four of seven passes for 88 yards and two touchdowns. Marshall Lobbestael, who played in place of injured Cougars quarterback Jeff Tuel, completed 28 of 48 passes for 337 yards and a touchdown. He was intercepted twice. Oregon’s special teams set the tone when they blocked Washington State’s punt after the game’s opening series and Boseko Lokombo returned it 26 yards for the touchdown. Andrew Furney kicked a 40-yard field goal to narrow the margin for the Cougars. Oregon made it 15-3 when Darron Thomas, scrambling away from several defenders, got off a pass moments before he was hit. Tuinei awkwardly pulled it down and stumbled into the end zone for a 55-yard touchdown. Washington State cornerback Damante Horton’s 76-yard interception return for a touchdown to narrowed the lead to 15-10 with 1:50 left. Ben-nett set the tone for Oregon in the second half with a pitch to De’Anthony Thomas who ran the rest of the way for a 45-yard score. After Furney’s 35-yard field goal for the Cougars, Bennett found Tuinei in the end zone for a 19-yard touchdown to give the Ducks a 29-13 advantage. The Cougars closed the gap again with Lobbestael’s 24-yard TD pass to Jared Karstetter, but De’Anthony Thomas answered with a 93-yard kickoff return for a score. Kenjon Barner ran for a 28-yard touchdown to open the fourth quarter for the Ducks. Washington State’s Rickey Galvin had an 8-yard scoring run and the two-point conversion was successful for the final margin.

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. – California quarterback Zach Maynard threw for 118 yards and a touchdown before leaving with an injury, Isi Sofele ran for 138 yards and a TD and California defeated Washington State 30-7. Maynard hit Anthony Miller for a 19-yard touchdown pass on the first series of the game by the Golden Bears who made a statement on a drizzly day in their next-to-last game at temporary home AT&T Park. Maynard was hurt recovering a fumble by Sofele with 4:52 remaining in the third, and Allan Bridgford replaced him. Quarterback Marshall Lobbestael and the Cougars (3-6, 1-5) faced constant pressure from the smothering Cal defense and managed only a 5-yard TD run early in the fourth quarter by Rickey Galvin, who attended Berkeley High School but wound up on the Palouse. Will Kapp, the son of former Cal coach and Bears 1959 Rose Bowl quarterback Joe Kapp, ran 43 yards for his first career touchdown on fourth-and-1 early in the third quarter for the Bears’ lone points of the second half. The Bears have won the last seven meetings against Washington State-- outscoring the Cougars 248-98--and four in a row at home. Cal won 20-13 last season in Pullman. Sofele carried 23 times on the way to his third 100-yard game of the season, and C.J. Anderson added a 5-yard touchdown run as Cal outgained the Cougars 411-224. Washington State managed only 22 yards in the first quarter, including four yards passing. Maynard made solid decisions and completed 10 of 17 passes. He was sacked once but didn’t throw an interception. Keenan Allen’s 29-yard catch set up Sofele’s touchdown late in the first quarter and put him over 1,000 yards receiving, the sixth player in Cal history to do so in a season. He finished with eight receptions for 85 yards. Lobbestael finished 15 for 37 for 155 yards.

PULLMAN, Wash. – Freshman quarterback Connor Halliday threw for 494 yards and four touchdowns as Washington State beat Arizona State 37-27 on a wet, snowy Sat-urday night. Despite a mix of rain and snow and temperatures in the 30s, the game featured few turnovers and plenty of offense. Halliday, seeing his first extensive play-ing time at quarterback, completed 27 of 36 passes, and the yardage was a freshman passing record for WSU. Marquess Wilson caught eight passes for 223 yards and three touchdowns for WSU. Isiah Barton caught seven passes for 155 yards and a touchdown. After a WSU fourth-quarter punt, Arizona State marched 58 yards to the Cougars’ 9. But quarterback Brock Osweiler and Cameron Marshall were stopped a yard short of a first down, and the Sun Devils turned the ball over on downs. Wash-ington State then drove 89 yards, with Halliday hitting a diving Barton on an 18-yard touchdown pass for a 30-27 lead with 8:55 left in the game. Arizona State drove to the WSU 5, but two passes and a run failed to produce a touchdown, and Alex Ga-routte’s 21-yard field goal attempt missed left with 5:45 remaining. Washington State mounted a drive from its 4, with Carl Winston rushing over from the 1 for a 37-27 lead with 1:50 to play. Arizona State’s Jamal Miles returned the opening kickoff 95 yards for a touchdown. Halliday hit Wilson in stride for an 85-yard touchdown pass late in the first quarter, but the extra point failed on a bad snap. The reception pushed Wil-son over the 1,000-yard mark for the second consecutive season. Halliday’s 23-yard touchdown loft to Wilson capped a 74-yard drive and gave the Cougars a 16-13 lead with 1:15 left in the half. But Osweiler marched the Sun Devils down the field, and Marshall ran over from the 2 for a 20-16 ASU lead at halftime. Halliday and Wilson hooked up for a third touchdown pass, a 19-yarder with 6:40 left in the third quarter that lifted WSU to a 23-20 lead.

PULLMAN, Wash. – Coleman Petersen kicked a 38-yard field goal in the first overtime as Utah beat Washington State 30-27 on a snowy Saturday. Washington State got the first possession of overtime, and quarterback Connor Halliday was intercepted by Mo Lee, his second of the game. Utah took over and John White ran three times for a total of 4 yards. Then Petersen came in and kicked the winning field goal for the Utes’ fourth consecutive victory. The temperature was 27 at kickoff, with mild winds and snowfall, making it difficult for both teams to gain yards on offense. White finished the night with 186 yards. Halliday completed 21 of 48 passes for 290 yards but was intercepted four times. The game was scoreless until Utah ran a fake punt, with Sean Sellwood instead firing a 49-yard touchdown pass to Luke Matthews. Washington State replied with its best drive of the half, covering 77 yards and ending when Halli-day hit Marquess Wilson for a 6-yard touchdown pass to tie the score at 7 at halftime. Utah fumbled on its second possession and C.J. Mizell recovered for WSU on the Utes’ 24. The Cougars drove to the 3, but had to settle for Andrew Furney’s 20-yard field goal and a 10-7 lead. After a WSU punt, Petersen’s 45-yard field goal gave Utah a 13-10 lead early in the fourth. Washington State receiver Kristoff Williams fired a 47-yard touchdown pass to Bobby Ratliff to cut Utah’s lead to 20-17 with 6:56 left. Utah came right back on its first play, as White ran 56 yards down the left sideline for a touchdown and a 27-17 Utah lead. Washington State had with a 74-yard drive that ended on a 9-yard touchdown pass from Halliday to Jared Karstetter, cutting Utah’s lead to 27-24 with 3:14 left. WSU got a final chance with 52 seconds left and no time-outs, from its own 26. Halliday threw completions of 24 and 44 yards to Karstetter and Furney kicked an 17-yard field goal with 3 seconds left to force overtime.

WASHINGTON STATE VS. UTAHNov. 19, 2011 • Martin Stadium • Att.: 16,419 • TV: FSN

PULLMAN, Wash. – Keith Price threw three touchdown passes to become Washing-ton’s all-time single-season leader in that category, the final one a 22-yard toss to Chris Polk, and Washington held off rival Washington State 38-21 to win the Apple Cup. Price threw his 29th touchdown pass of the season midway through the third quarter, finding Polk on a wheel-route out of the backfield to give the Huskies a 28-14 lead. Washington State pulled within 28-21, but Erik Folk’s 46-yard field goal early in the fourth quarter pushed the lead to 10 and Polk sealed the Huskies third straight Apple Cup title on his 1-yard TD run with 5:23 left. Price finished 21 of 29 for 291 yards. Washington also got a blocked punt that Jesse Callier returned 2 yards for a touchdown in the first quarter. It was 14-0 after Price threw a 16-yard TD pass to Kasen Williams, part of Williams’ monster first half, and it appeared a Huskies rout was on. The Cougars rallied twice, pulling even at 14-all and later getting within 28-21 in the third quarter, but Washington State could not overcome its mistakes. The final one came early in the fourth quarter on a failed double pass. Running back Carl Winston threw back to quarterback Marshall Lobbestael, who then threw for Mar-quess Wilson, but the pass was batted by Desmond Trufant into the arms of safety Sean Parker. Washington took the turnover and capped the clinching drive on Polk’s TD run. Polk finished with 100 yards on 22 carries. Williams already had two catches when he pulled in a 16-yard TD pass from Price in the corner of the end zone to give the Huskies a 14-0 first-quarter lead. Lobbestael was starting in place of redshirt freshman Connor Halliday after Halliday suffered a lacerated liver during last week’s 30-27 overtime loss to Utah that ended the Cougars hopes of becoming bowl eligible. Lobbestael completed 29 of 42 for 344 yards and three touchdowns, but was battered and sacked seven times by Washington’s defense. Wilson finished with seven catches for 108 yards and two TDs, including a 38-yarder in the third quarter that pulled the Cougars within 28-21.
