Students will fill out a tardy slip if they step in my class after the bell rings or are unprepared to start class.

If you have a note (reason for being tardy) bring it to me and have a seat quietly-no tardy given

1st Tardy – Warning

2 tardies = 1 absence

10 absences = No grade for the semester

2nd Tardy – Parent contacted

3rd Tardy – parent contacted and one day of detention

4th Tardy –Parent contacted and two days of detention

Grade Breakdown

How often will there be homework?

Students can expect to have homework every week, though not every day. The amount of homework often depends on how well students use their time in class.

Goofing off= homework

Extra Credit

Most extra credit opportunities will be extensions of regular labs and assignments. Students may also turn in late passes or hall passes for extra credit. No extra credit will be given to replace missing assignments.

Daily Work / Bellwork

Grades should be updated by Wednesday each week

Seating Chart: There will be a seating chart. I will change the seating chart every nine weeks, and individual changes will only be made if there is a conflict between neighbors.

Daily Work: All new work for the day will be in the trays when you enter the class. This includes notes and handouts we will work on in class. Students are to gather these materials before instruction begins each day. This is part of being prepared for class – it is your responsibility.

· Incomplete work will not be accepted and will be given a score of zero (any assignment that is more than 25% blank answers or responses like “I don’t know” is considered incomplete)

Late Work:

· Assignments typically will be due every Thursday and collected/Graded in class.

· If you do not have the assignment to turn in on the due date an Excuse sheet- must be turned in on the date the assignment is due to receive credit for the assignment.

· When turning in late work. Get a Late Pass from the Pass Book and staple it to the top of the payer

· Put the paper in the Late/Absent tray to receive credit.

· If it is late is because you were absent put Absent on the Late Pass and the dates you were absent

· Students can receive Free Late Pass (allows you to turn in a paper late without losing points) for helping in the class and good behavior

· No Free Late passes will be accepted for projects except under special circumstances

The science department’s late policy

On time = 100% credit. 1 day late = 80% max credit, more than 1 day late %50 max credit, after 2 weeks late the assignment will be a permanent Zero. Long term projects are NOT accepted late unless otherwise indicated by the teacher.

Absent Work: Students have one day to make up work for each day they are absent. For example, if a student

is gone for two school days, they have two school days to make up the work. Students can get the absent work from the Past Assignment file cabinet drawer in the classroom.

· If it is Late is because you were absent put Absent on the Late Pass and the dates you were absent

· It is the responsibility of the student to get and makeup any work missed during their absence

Testing Policy: In order prove mastery of a concept, students must pass each test with at least an 70%

· Students will need something to work on quietly when they are done with their quiz in class.

· Students who score less than 70% on their test will need to get a pass from Ms. Williams to come in on Tuesday to retake the test. This is not meant as a punishment, but rather as a way to help master the material

· Before a student will be allowed to retest they must make test corrections and come in on Tuesday during lunch or afterschool to retake the test. Get a Hall Pass from Ms. Williams on Monday.

Students have gathered notes and material in their science notebooks to utilize as study tools.

Cheating: Cheating is copying from someone else’s work, talking during a quiz, as well as copying information from outside sources without giving credit to those sources. I have a zero tolerance policy for cheating. If you are caught cheating on a test, quiz, homework, or project, it is an automatic zero for the assignment. If someone copies someone else’s homework with that person knowing about it, both students will receive a zero on the assignment.

Incentive Days: These will occur every Friday as a reward for helping in the classroom and showing positive classroom behavior. More will be explained by Ms. Williams

Text @c287f to the number 81010

You will receive a welcome text from Remind

Highland East Science Department is collecting box tops to help buy supplies and equipment. Every time you bring 25 or More box tops to your science teacher you will receive a front of the lunch line pass for every 25 box tops.

Box tops must be:

trimmed and put in an envelope or baggie with your name, hour and # of box tops.

Classroom Expectations: I expect a classroom of respect where we use our time wisely to explore Earth’s systems & Animals!! You need to be an independent learner-

What are the best ways to study?

How do I use a textbook?

How do I would with classmates?

How do I do research?

How do I learn best?

Ho do I solve conflicts?

The following statement summarizes my goal for my classroom..

initial

Grading: All grades will be calculated using a total point system. For example, an assignment worth 50 points could be recorded as 44/50 instead of an 88%.

initial

Testing/cheating: Quizzes will be given weekly about the topic of the week. Science Notebooks and folders will have all of the review materials they need if they are in class and taking the correct notes. Assignments given during the week are the main study guide for the test. Talking during the test or cheating will be ground for an immediate Zero on the quiz.

initial

Extra Credit: Extra credit assignments will be made available throughout the year. Extra credit will follow course curriculum, and will be announced and posted in the classroom throughout the year. Please turn in any extra credit to your hour’s homework tray. Extra credit will not be given to take the place of missing assignments.

initial

Absences and Tardies: Each student is allowed 10 unexcused absences per semester, as outlined in the Moore Public Schools policy. More than 10 absences will result in a loss of credit for the semester, and please note that 2 tardies count as 1 absence, so do you best to be on time to class. I will follow the Highland East tardy policy as stated in your agenda.

1st Tardy – Warning 3rd Tardy – Call home and one day of detention

2nd Tardy – Phone Call Home 4th Tardy – Call home and two days of detention

initial

Absent Work: Students are required to get their absent work. Students have one day to make up work for each day they are absent. For example, if a student is gone for two school days, they have two school days to make up the work. Students can look on the agenda and get their absent folder. Write ABSENT at the top of any Absent work and turn it with the folder in to the Late & Absent Work bin. If a student is absent, they are still required to complete the Bell Work for the missed days.

initial

Notebooks: I expect students to have a science notebook in class each day. They are to keep all notes, graded papers, and any other materials that they receive in class. Quiz questions will come from information in science notebooks and Folders. There will be random notebook grades and an end of semester grade. I will explain how I would like notebooks organized

initial

Late Work: The science department late policy is that regular class assignments will be accepted one day late for a maximum credit of 80% in the 7th grade. After that point late work will be accepted for a maximum credit of 50% until the final deadline set by the teacher. At that point the grade will change to a O. Long term projects are not accepted late unless otherwise indicated by the teacher. Write LATE at the top of any late work, and turn it in to the Late & Absent Work bin.

initial

Projects: We will complete 3 large projects in class. I will send home a parent info. form with each project. The projects will be group work. There will be time to work in class and outside of class. Information and deadlines will be given. All projects must be complete on the presentation dates or a zero will be given. Plagiarism will be grounds for a zero to be given. Problems with the project, group, absences need to be addressed before the presentation dates

Lab Safety Contract

Science classes are often hands on.  Students will be performing activities that may require the use of chemicals, laboratory equipment, and other items which, if used incorrectly, can be hazardous. To keep our class safe, the rules listed below must be followed at all times.  The student and a parent / guardian must sign this sheet to participate in labs

Please read the entire contract before you sign.

- GENERAL SAFETY RULES -

· Follow all instructions carefully.  If you do not understand a direction or part of a procedure, ASK YOUR TEACHER BEFORE PROCEEDING WITH THE ACTIVITY

· Be responsible! Horseplay, jokes, and pranks will not be tolerated

· Keep the surfaces and floors of your work area uncluttered during the lab

· Clean up lab area and properly store equipment after the lab is complete

· Report any broken equipment, accidents, or injuries to the teacher immediately

· Know the locations and operating procedures of all safety equipment including: safety showers, sinks, first aid kits, and fire extinguishers

CHEMICAL SAFETY (many items are chemicals even if they don’t look harmful)

· Wear safety glasses or goggles at all times when working with chemicals

· Don’t touch any part of your face without first washing your hands

· Never eat or drink in the lab

· Follow teacher instructions for proper chemical disposal

· Consider all chemicals to be dangerous – don’t touch, smell or mix chemicals unless instructed to do so by the teacher. Many chemicals look deceptively like water!

FIRE SAFETY

· Use caution when using matches, hot plates, burners or torches

· Only light burners when instructed to do so and never leave a lit burner unattended

· Don’t heat any substances without an okay from the teacher

· Use tongs or oven mitts when handling hot containers (Hot glass looks like cold glass)

· Always wear goggles when heating glass

· Dress properly – avoid loose or baggy clothing or jewelry and tie long hair back

GLASS & SHARP-OBJECT SAFETY

· Handle all glassware with care, never pickup broken glass with your bare hands

· Never run during lab time, especially with sharp objects! (Generally a good rule in life)

· Always hand sharp objects with the blade facing towards yourself
