GENERAL RULES

1. This show will comply in every respect with the requirements and objectives of the National Garden Clubs, Inc., for a Design Specialty Flower Show as established by the Handbook for Flower Shows Revised 2017, with revisions printed in The National Gardener Magazine.

2. Only members of 7th District Federated Garden Clubs of NYS Inc., may enter the show, and each entry must be the work of one person, except in Club Competition.

3. There must be an emphasis on FRESH plant material. 4. No artificial plant material will be allowed in any division. 5. All entries will be received at Burgundy Basin from 5:00 - 7:00 p.m. on

Tuesday, May 5, 2020, and from 7:30 - 9:00 am on Wednesday, May 6. Exhibits must be approved by 9:15 am. All exhibitors off the floor by 9:15.

6. Advance registration is required for all entries in the show. 7. Each exhibitor is limited to one entry per class. 8. The Classification Chairman for each division must review all entries for

proper identification and conformity to the schedule prior to judging. Final determination for conformance is the judges’ responsibility.

9. Judging will take place from 9:30 am to 12:00 pm on May 6, 2020. 10. Judging will be by the NGC Standard System of Awarding, Handbook for

Flower Shows Revised 2017, page 39. The decisions of the judges are final. Awards may be withheld if not merited.

11. The General Chairman and the Classification Chairmen must be available during all judging for possible consultations. They, along with the judges and clerks are the only personnel allowed on the floor during judging.

12. The use of native plants protected by New York State and locally invasive plant material is strictly prohibited.

13. The 7th District of Federated Garden Clubs of NYS, Inc., and Burgundy Basin will strive to assure the safety of all items after arrival and placement, but are not responsible for any loss or damage to exhibits.

14. All exhibits must be removed no earlier than 3:00 pm and no later than 4:00 pm on May 6, 2020.

AWARDS The NGC Standard System of Awards.

Only one first place (blue) ribbon per class. Must score 90 or above. Only one second place (red) ribbon per class. Must score 85 or above. Only one third place (yellow) ribbon per class. Must score 80 or above. One or more honorable mention (white) ribbons as merited. Must score 75 or above.

All non-blue ribbon exhibits scoring 90+ points must be signed and dated by an NGC Accredited Judge on the judging panel.

Division I Design:

Award of Design Excellence, one rosette of gold ribbons is offered and may be awarded to the highest scoring exhibit of 95 or more in the entire Design Division. Table Artistry Award, a rosette of burgundy ribbons, is offered and may be awarded to the highest scoring exhibit in the tables classes in Division I, Sections A, B, and C. Petite Award, one small rosette of blue and white ribbons is offered and may be awarded the most outstanding petite design in a show of otherwise full-sized designs. Division I, Section E is eligible. The Tricolor Award, one rosette of red, blue, and yellow, is offered and may be awarded to the highest scoring exhibit in Division I, Section F. Club Competition Award, one rosette of light blue ribbons, is offered and may be awarded to the highest scoring exhibit in Division I, Section D Agnes Shaddock Award, a rotating silver cup, is a local award. It may be awarded to the highest scoring design by a Seventh District Judges Council member in Division I, Section G. Director’s Award is offered and may be awarded in Division I, Section C, at the discretion of the Director.

Division II Education:

The Educational Top Exhibitor Award, one rosette of brown and white, is offered and may be awarded to the highest scoring exhibit in Division II, Section A.

Division III Botanical Arts:

Artistic Crafts Award, a rosette of baby blue ribbons, is offered and may be awarded to the highest scoring exhibit scoring 95 or more in Division III, Section A. Botanical Arts Photography Award, a rosette of black and white ribbons, is offered and may be awarded to the highest scoring blue ribbon winner scoring 95 or more in Division III, Section B.

DIVISION I DESIGN RULES

1. All general show rules apply. 2. The NGC Exhibit Policies are printed in the NGC Handbook for Flower

Shows Revised 2017, Chapter 7, Exhibiting in the Design Division, NGC Policies and Guidelines.

3. Advance registration in all sections must be made with the Design Entry Chairman, Anne Hauber at 585-872-5352 or 880-9496, no later than

April 22, 2020. 4. An exhibit entered must be the work of only one exhibitor, and that

exhibitor’s name must appear on the entry card. 5. Some plant material must be used in each entry, but need not be grown by

the exhibitor. Fresh and/or dried plant material is permitted, with or without components, unless restricted by the schedule.

6. The exhibit must exemplify the characteristics sufficiently enough that the Design Type is readily apparent and is placed in a space provided by the committee.

7. An exhibitor may enter as many classes as desired, but only one per class. 8. A single flower is not a design and container-grown plants are never

considered designs. 9. Fresh plant material may not be treated in any manner. Only dried plant

material may be treated to alter its appearance, and no artificial flowers or foliage are permitted.

10. Cut fruits and vegetables and open beverage containers are not permitted. 11. It is the responsibility of the designer to find a substitute if not able to fulfill a

reservation and to notify the Design Entry Chairman Anne Hauber. 12. All plant material used in the design must be identified on a card, provided by

the exhibitor, and included with the entry tag. 13. Guidelines for Design Types, Advance Design Types, Table Designs, and

Table Appointments are printed in the NGC Handbook for Flower Shows Revised 2017, Chapter 7.

14. Judging will be by the Design Scale of Points listed in the NGC Handbook for Flower Shows Revised 2017, pages 130 and 131.

15. Decisions of the judges are final.

DIVISION I DESIGN “Farming is a Profession of Hope”

The Award of Design Excellence is offered in Division I

SECTION A “Eat, Sleep, Farm (repeat)” Eligible for Table Artistry Award

A functional tray for one staged on a 30 inch high, black covered and skirted table with a neutral background, in a space 24 inches wide by 30 inches deep. A decorative unit (floral design) and all appointments must be placed on the tray, which is judged for stability and scale. Napkin required, but not placed on a dish or beverage container. No flatware included. Fresh and/or dried plant material may be used. NGC Handbook For Flower Shows, Revised 2017, pages 76 and 77. CLASS 1. “Early to Rise” 4 entries (Open to anyone who has not won a blue ribbon at an NCG Flower Show) CLASS 2. “”High Noon” 4 entries CLASS 3. “Lazy Afternoon” 4 entries

SECTION B “Pot Luck” Eligible for Table Artistry Award

An Exhibition Table, not meant to be functional, created artistically to suggest the service of food, using a staging panel, 36 inches high by 24 inches wide, and an underlay provided by the exhibitor. Staged on a 30 inch high, black covered and skirted table, in a space 30 inches wide by 30 inches deep. Underlay may not exceed the edge of the table. Some fresh and/or dried plant material must be used within the overall design. NGC Handbook for Flower Shows, Revised 2017, page 76.

CLASS 4. “Sow Your Wild Oats” 4 entries CLASS 5 “Thank a Farmer” 4 entries CLASS 6. “Green Acres” 4 entries

SECTION C “Farm to Table” Eligible for Table Artistry Award

CLASS 7. “Picnic in the Meadow”. 4 entries An Alfresco table for two, staged on a bistro table 40 inches high, three with a 30 inch diameter and one with a 29 inch diameter, set for actual service of food and using a basket. A decorative unit using choice of fresh and/or dried plant material must be included. Table covering provided by the exhibitor should have 6 inches minimum drop. No flatware included. NGC Handbook for Flower Shows Revised 2017, pages 76 and 77. 5

CLASS 8. “A Gathering” 4 entries A functional buffet table service for four or more, with components conveniently and logically placed for ease of self-service. At least one serving piece is required. A decorative unit (a completed floral design with or without candles and other accessories) must be included. No flatware included. Staged on a 96 inch long by 30 inch deep table, with a bleached cotton covering, extending to the floor, provided by the committee. Table covering provided by the exhibitor should have a six inch minimum drop. NGC Handbook for Flower Shows Revised 2017, page 76 and 77.

CLASS 9. “Sunday Dinner” 4 entries A functional table for four, staged on the exhibitor’s card table, set for actual service of food. A decorative unit (a completed floral design with or without candles and accessories) must be included. No flatware included. Table covering provided by exhibitor should have a 6 inch minimum drop. NGC Handbook for Flower Shows Revised 2017, pages 76 and 77.

SECTION D “Square Dance” Eligible for Club Competition Award

CLASS 10. “Country Hoedown” 4 entries A functional buffet table service for four or more, with components conveniently and logically placed for ease of self-service. At least one serving piece is required. A decorative unit (a completed floral design with or without candles and other accessories) must be included. No flatware included. Staged on a 96 inch long by 30 inch deep table, with a bleached cotton covering extended to the floor, provided by the committee. Table covering provided by the exhibitor should have a 6 inch minimum drop. NGC Handbook for Flower Shows Revised 2017, page 79.

SECTION E “Farmer in the Dell” Eligible for Petite Award CLASS 11. “Charlotte’s Web” 4 entries A petite hanging design, not exceeding 5 inches in any direction, to be displayed on a shelf at eye level and hung from a 10 inch tall, black metal device provided by the committee. A staging panel and underlay no larger than 12 inches high by eight inches wide must be used. NCG Handbook for Flower Shows, Revised 2017, page 73.

CLASS 12. “The Egg and I” 4 entries A petite creative design, not to exceed 8 inches in any direction, staged on a shelf at eye level in a space 10 inches wide by 10 inches high. A staging panel and underlay, no larger than 10 inches high by 10 inches deep, provided by the exhibitor are required. NCG Handbook for Flower Shows, Revised 2017, page 73.

CLASS 13. “Sheepish” 4 entries A petite design, not to exceed 10 inches in any direction, staged on a shelf at eye level in a space 12 inches high by 12 inches wide. A staging panel and underlay, no larger than 12 inches high by 12 inches deep, provided by the exhibitor are required. NCG Handbook for Flower Shows, Revised 2017, page 73.

SECTION F “Farmers Harvest More than Crops” Eligible for Tricolor Award

CLASS 14. “Spring Vegetables” 4 entries A horizontal design using fresh vegetables, staged on a black skirted table in a space 40 inches wide by 30 inches deep. Some other fresh plant material may be used, but the emphasis is on vegetables. A staging panel and underlay, 36 inches wide by 24 inches high, provided by the exhibitor are required. NCG Handbook for Flower Shows, Revised 2017, pages 70-72.

CLASS 15. “The Silo” 4 entries A creative design staged on a barn red, round pedestal 42 inches high, with a top measuring 13 inches in diameter. All plant material must be fresh. Components and an underlay may be used. NCG Handbook for Flower Shows, Revised 2017, page 71-74.

CLASS 16. “Barn Raising”. 4 entries An American Traditional mass design using plant material in a naturalistic manner, featuring an eight inch plate depicting a barn provided by the committee, staged on a black skirted table in a space 30 inches wide by 30 inches deep. A staging panel and underlay, 36 inches high and 24 inches wide, provided by the exhibitor are required. All plant material must be fresh. NCG Handbook for Flower Shows, Revised 2017, pages 70 and 71.

SECTION G “The North Forty” Eligible for Agnes Shaddock Award

CLASS 17. “Don’t Fence Me In.” 4 entries A floor design staged in a space 48 inches wide by 48 inches deep, on a stage about 12 inches high. Exhibitor to provide an underlay. Fresh and/or dried plant material may be used. NCG Handbook for Flower Shows, page 78.

DIVISION II EDUCATION RULES

1. All General show rules apply. 2. Education exhibits may be the work of more than one individual or

organization unless a Student Judge or and Accredited Judge is seeking exhibiting credit for preparing an education exhibit.

3. Names of exhibitors may appear in the schedule only if the exhibits are not being judged. 4 The Educational Top Exhibitor Award is offered. 5. An exhibit must occupy a minimum of eighteen square feet surface area. 6. Plant material is not required, although NGC encourages the use of plant material when appropriate. 7. No artificial plant material is permitted in an Education Exhibit. 8. Exhibits staged on a 30” high, black covered and skirted table with a cream colored background.

DIVISION II. EDUCATION “Your Farm Tells a Story”

The Educational Top Exhibitor Award is offered in Division II

Section A “Living with the Land” Exhibit 1. “Finger Lakes Land Trust” 1 entry “To conserve forever the lands and waters of the Finger Lakes Region, ensuring scenic vistas, local foods, clean water, and wild places for everyone.”

Exhibit 2. “Bee Keeping” 1 entry “Bee keeping has become a vital element in addressing the declining bee population. Education for all farmers and gardeners is imperative.” Exhibit 3. “4-H” 1 entry “The 4-H emblem is a green four leaf clover with a white “H” on each leaf. The “H” on each leaf stands for Head, Hearth, Hands and Health. The emblem and clubs first appeared in 1875 and are supported by the Cooperative Extension in each state.”

DIVISION III BOTANICAL ARTS ARTISTIC CRAFTS RULES

1. Artistic Crafts are objects with a function. They may be artistically pleasing, but are not created solely for their artistic value. They serve a purpose.

2. The Botanical Arts Artistic Crafts Award is offered and may be awarded to the highest scoring blue ribbon in Section A.

3. Advance registration in Section A should be made with the Botanical Arts Artistic Crafts Entries Chairman Susan Krobusek at 585-924-3729, no later than April 22, 2020.

4. An artistic craft entered in competition must be the work of only one exhibitor and that exhibitor's name must appear on the entry card.

5. Exhibit must contain some fresh and/or dried plant material. Only dried material may be treated.

6. No artificial, endangered or locally invasive plant material may be used. 7. A 3” x 5” card listing the plant material used must be included with all artistic

craft entries. 8. An exhibitor may enter as many classes in the Botanical Arts Artistic Crafts

Division as desired, but only one exhibit per class. 9. If an artistic crafts exhibitor is unable to fulfill an entry assignment, it is the

exhibitor’s responsibility to provide a replacement and notify the Botanical Arts Artistic Crafts Entries Chairman Susan Krobusek at 585-924-3729.

10. Entries will be judged by the Artistic Crafts Scale of Points, NGC Handbook for Flower Shows, revised 2017.

PHOTOGRAPHY RULES

1. A photographic image created to be artistically pleasing and related to horticulture, gardening, natural landscape or NGC initiatives.

2. The Botanical Arts Photography Award is offered and may be awarded to the highest scoring blue ribbon in Section B.

3. Advance registration in Section B is required and must be made with Botanical Arts Photography Entries Chairman Martha Hart at 585-289-4715, no later than April 22, 2020.

4. A photograph entered in competition must be the work of only one exhibitor, and that exhibitor’s name must appear on the entry card.

5. An exhibitor may enter as many classes in Botanical Arts Photography as desired, but only one exhibit per class.

6. Photography exhibits are intended to stimulate garden/gardening interest, photographic abilities, and NGC goals and objectives. Some plant material must be included in each photograph.

7. Exhibitor is encouraged to label photographed plant material, preferably with current scientific designation,

8. Photographs in Classes 1, 2, 3, and 4 must be exhibited in color. 9. Photographs must be matted by the exhibitor; no frames allowed.

10. Photographs will be displayed in an upright position on an upright, black board for judging and viewing. 11. If an exhibitor is unable to fulfill an entry assignment, it is the exhibitor’s

responsibility to provide a replacement and to contact Botanical Arts Photography Entries Chairman, Martha Hart at 585-289-4715.

DIVISION III BOTANICAL ARTS “The Best Memories are Made on the Farm”

SECTION A. ARTISTIC CRAFTS “Barn Wedding” Eligible for Botanical Arts Artistic Crafts Award CLASS 1. “Pew Bow” 4 entries A “ready to hang” pew bow created by the exhibitor must contain some fresh and/or dried plant material. Only dried plant material may be painted or artificially treated. The exhibit may be no more than 12 inches wide by 24 inches long. Exhibit to be staged against a “cherry” wood panel 7 1/2 inches wide by 44 inches high. The design is suspended from a hook provided by the committee, and a hanging loop must be included by the exhibitor.

CLASS 2. “Napkin Ring” 4 entries A napkin ring provided by the exhibitor embellished with some fresh and/or dried plant material. Only dried plant material may be painted or artificially treated. A napkin, provided by the exhibitor, must be included. A black underlay on a specified area of table, no larger than eighteen inches deep by eighteen inches wide will be provided by the committee.

CLASS 3. “Lantern” 4 entries A lantern, no higher than 18 inches tall, provided by the exhibitor, must be embellished with some fresh and/or dried plant material. Only dried plant material may be painted or artificial treated. No lighted candles are permitted. Artificial candles may be used. A black underlay and specified area of table no larger than 24 inches deep by 24 wide will be provided by the committee.

CLASS 4. “Flower Girl’s Headpiece” `4 entries A “ready to wear” flower girls headpiece embellished with fresh and/or dried plant material. Only dried plant material may be painted or artificially treated. The exhibit will be displayed on a mannequin head, 10 inches high, painted black, provided by the committee, with a black underlay, on a specified area of table, no larger than 18 inches deep by 18 inches wide. 10

CLASS 5. “Invitation” 4 entries A wedding or shower invitation, no larger than 6 inches wide by 8 inches high, provided by the exhibitor and embellished only with dried plant material. Exhibited on an easel provided by the committee, with a black underlay, on a specified area of table no larger than 18 inches deep by 18 inches wide.

SECTION B PHOTOGRAPHY “The Farm in Bloom”

Eligible for Botanical Arts Photography Award CLASS 7. “The Pasture” 4 entries A color photographic image 10 inches wide by 8 inches high, matted for display horizontally at eye level. CLASS 8. “Spring is in the Air” 4 entries A color photographic image depicting one or more spring blossoms, 8 inches wide by 10 inches tall, matted for display vertically at eye level. CLASS 9. “Country Roads Take Me Home” 4 entries A color photographic image 10 inches wide by 8 inches high, matted for display horizontally at eye level.

CLASS 10. “Sunrise, Sunset” 4 entries A color photographic image 10 inches wide by 8 inches high, matted for display horizontally at eye level.
