This booklet is explicitly made for the course“Constructing Architecture” at the Universityof Technology of Eindhoven.

Based on a lecture series, an attempt has beenmade to visualize my personal interpretationof different design approaches from eightarchitects of the Dutch and Flemish buildingpractice. The goal of this exercise is to pointout differences in ways of designing and even

similarities. Also the ways of visualizing andthe (dis-)advantages will be discussed.

    Focus of design

The designs of Haiko show a strongdependency on craftmanship and workingwith the materials. Experimentation is themain means through which a designconcept emerges. There is also a strongrespect regarding nature which shows inmaterial use.

    Focus of design

The buildings designed by Caro and herteam show a strong relation with theirsuroundings. Most of the identity of abuilding is derived from its context. Thefacade is an important means of expressionof this identity. Through testing andmockups the right tectonic means andways of expression are investigated.

Felix Claus (Felix Claus Dick van Wageningen Architecten)

    Focus of design

Felix gets inspired by other architects suchas Mies van der Rohe and Rem Koolhaas. This explains his fascination for creatingspaces with clean and precise detailing. The preparation for the eventual executionof the design is thorough. The constructionmethod also greatly influences the designso it is done in an early stage.

    Focus of design

For David, working with multiple teamsacross the globe is an everyday practice. There is a lot of attention for specific needsof the client and the integration of projectsin different cultural contexts. Conceptualdesign that works on a practical level is insome cases prefered over beautifulbuilding designs.

    Focus of design

Building concepts are generated quiteintuitively by Jan. The presence of daylightin buildings is one of the key elements thatfurther influences design decisions. Also

the use of technology and innovativedesign solutions play an important part inthe design process. The detailing is alsoput to the test by making mockups.

    Focus of design

The focus for Marco lies on integration ofbuildings in their surroundings. Thereforelandscape design is a major activity in hisStudio with special attention for self

sustaining environments. Before anydesign decisions are taken, a vast amountof research and data collecting is done tomap the impact of a design.

Jo Taillieu (Architecten De Vylder Vinck Taillieu)

    Focus of design

The way of designing is intuitive in thesense that Jo documents what he discoverswhile he explores and tackles a project. The (type of) drawings are an important

way of communication in this process. Thedesigns need time to fully adapt to theirsurroundings. After construction thedesign comes to life by its ordinary use.

    Paul Diederen (DiederenDirrix)

    Focus of design

According to Paul, technology, economicsand design are 3 important factors to keepin mind during a building process. NewBIM technology has allowed for more focus

on the initial design phase, reducingmodification costs. A lot of attention goesto choosing the materials and theirperformance quality, as well as detailing.

The circular design of the diagrams isdeliberately chosen to represent the designprocess as a non-linear process, because it can

go back and forth and sometimes a huge stepback must be taken to move forward.

The advantage to this type of flow chartdiagram is that it allows for different influencesand external factors to come into the process,as shown with the arrows. The terms in black

represent actions or products that come intoplay at a specific phase of the project.

A possible disadvantage that I found was thatthe circle still suggests a kind of completenesssince “final design” marks the end of the circle.

The circular movement can only be complete ifyou take a big step back. It was not myintention to suggest that a design process canever be complete or finished. Even when thebuilding is completed, the architect still holdsresponsibility for the design decisions thathave been made, because it will impact its

users for a long period of time.
