New Union Railway Minister
Shri Mukul Roy has been sworn in as the new Union
Railway Minister on 20th March. Prior to this, he was the
Minister of State for the Ministry of Shipping since 28th
May 2009. He has also served as MoSR from 19.05.11 to
11.07.11. He was elected to Rajya Sabha in April 2006. He
was Member, Committee on Urban Development and
Member of Consultative Committee for the Ministry of
Home Affairs during Aug’06 to May’09.
He was Permanent Special Invitee, Consultative Committee for the Ministry of
Railways during April’08 to May’09. He had actively participated in various
cultural activities, viz drama and quiz, served in various community
development projects including eradication of illiteracy, providing free education
to the poor, training of civil defence etc, participated in scouting activities under
Bharat Scouts and Guides and took part in their regular camps. He has also taken
active interest in inter-school science exhibitions. As a social worker, Shri Roy
was Non-Executive Director, United Bank of India, during 2002 to 2005. He
took interest in football matches and one day cricket matches.
New Member Mechanical
Shri Keshav Chandra has taken over as Member
Mechanical, Railway Board, and ex-officio Secretary to
Government of India on 9th March 2012. Prior to this, he
was GM/NFR. An officer of the 1975 batch of IRSME, he
had worked as AGM/ECR & NR, DRM/Ambala, ED/RDSO.
He is credited with first set of successful trials for DMRC rakes and their
subsequent clearance and helping introduce the concept of technical Quality
Audit on Indian Railways. He also worked as Railway Advisor for Europe
(Based in Berlin) and is well versed with the latest railway technologies and is
credited with having brought several new technologies closer to home.
Shri Keshav Chandra who is a product of La Martiniere College, Lucknow,
graduated from IRIMEE, Jamalpur. He is known for maintaining excellent man-
management relations. He has been associated with the voluntary Blood
Donation Movement in the country. Having donated blood some 80 times since
1976, Shri Chandra has also written a paper, titled ‘Donate Once In A Life Time’
(DOIALT) scheme which advocates that if every healthy Indian was to donate
blood only once in a lifetime, the shortage of safe blood in the country would be
wiped out. He has been a keen sportsman and has authored a book “One track
Mind” released by Shri Bishen Singh Bedi in 2002.

New trains announced for Tamilnadu are CBE-BKN AC
Exp (W), MAS-SBC AC DD Exp (D), TPJ-TEN Intercity
Exp (D), VSKP-MAS Exp (W), KCG-MDU Exp (W),
SHLM-MAS Exp (W), MQ-TPTY Express (TW), MAS-
Puri Exp (W), ASN-MAS Exp (W). The two new
passenger trains announced are VM-KPD & VM-MV.
The trains that are extended are MDU-TPTY Exp to
RMM; PGT-MAQ Exp to CBE and DDR-YPR Exp to
PDY (3 days)/ TEN (3days). Frequency of MDU-TPTY,
MAS-MAQ and NZM-CAPE Exp has been increased.

� If the network data cable is unplugged from PC for more
than 3 times, the connection will get blocked. The SSE/IT

� Regional Rail Museum has completed its 10th

March.
� Chennai division of Southern Railway has introduced 24
hrs SMS helpline for the passenger to make complaint, the no.

� NFIR has launched mobile update service. One can
subscribe for receiving regular updates through SMS by just

Chennai Metro - The underground line from
Washermanpet to Saidapet will be at its deepest point of 30.8
metres as it passes under the Cooum and the Beach-Egmore
railway line opposite Ripon Buildings. The line that comes
from the High Court area reaches Metro's Central station in
front of Ripon Buildings, turns left, crosses the railway line
and the river and passes underneath the neighbourhoods of
Chintadripet to reach the underground station at the new
Secretariat on Anna Salai. Metro tunnels are made without
cutting open the ground. Giant machines will bore the
tunnels as the river flows above and suburban trains continue
to operate above the surface. Traffic along Anna Salai and
Poonamallee High Road will not be diverted during the
boring. Two tunnels come one above the other near Central
railway station. The Central-Anna Nagar route tunnel will be
23 metres below the surface, while the Washermanpet-
airport route tunnel will run 28 metres under the ground.

Smt K.R.Bharathi, Jr Clerk, Electrical, has been selected
for award by the Central RWWO for her outstanding
performance in collecting the dues of `5,73,829 from
commercial establishment located in ICF premises and
clearing many long pending cases.
BATTERY OPERATED SIREN
Sri S.Rajendran, Tech-2, Shop85, has
designed a battery operated siren with
flash light to alert the passesrby while
the coach is shunted. The PIEZO
sound system disturbs and alerts even
if a person is talking on cell phone.
It also has a RED colour high-focus flashlight. It is a
portable device which can be fixed on any part of the
coach using the magnetic base which is energised using
6V rechargeable battery with ON/OFF switch. There is a
separate switch to control the light & sound. Once
charged this device can be used for a minimum period of
3 hours. The cost of single device is Rs. 3500 which will
come down drastically when manufactured in bulk qty.
this device will be very much useful for movement of
coaches inside ICF and also in yards/moving to platform.
Sri K.S.Sridharan, SME/DSD, presented a paper on
“Quality in higher education” in the “International
Conference on Social Science and Humanity” held on
10th & 11th March organized by Jawaharlal Nehru
Technological University.
Selvi J.Shreya, D/o. Shri K.Jegannathan, SSE/Plg/F, has
secured 2nd
place and won a DVD player with home
theatre in the state level Spell Bee International
competition (for class V and VI) conducted by an NGO.
Smt Shanti Tigga, Pointsman, Alipurdar division of
N.F.Railway, has become the first lady from Indian
Railways to join the Territorial Army and has been
conferred with president award in a defence ceremony
held in Rashtrapati Bhawan.

� A pre-feasibility survey for a similar corridor between

� Indian Railways has already started manufacturing of
new generation 6000 HP electric locomotives and EMUs with
regenerative braking feature at CLW and ICF respectively.
Such technology will be implemented on more number of
locomotives and EMUs in future.
� DLW has set a new record by releasing 190th
HHP engine of 2011-12 on 31st march. Last year it made
150 HHP engines.
� Indian Railways has commissioned one wind mill plant
of 10.5 MW capacity for ICF on 31.03.09. Two wind mill
power plants of 10.5 MW capacity each one in Jaisalmer
(NWR) and other in Tamil Nadu (SR) have been sanctioned.
There is Proposal to set up wind mill plants of 72 MW
capacity in the states of Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Kerala,
Tamil Nadu and West Bengal.
� Indian Railways have decided to eliminate unmanned
level crossings by constructing Road Under Bridge
(RUB)/subways in lieu of level crossing, by constructing
diversion road for merger of unmanned level crossing gate to
nearby manned or unmanned gates or subway or RUB or
Road Over Bridge (ROB) and by closing unmanned level
crossings having NIL Vehicle Unit where roads are non-
existent on either side. Railways have also decided to
progressively man such unmanned level crossings, which
cannot be eliminated by any other means. As on 1st April
2011, there are 14896 unmanned and 17839 manned level
crossings on Indian Railways.
� IRCTC has launched the scheme for booking Railway
e-tickets through mobile phone through its website i.e.
irctc.co.in/mobile. Users can use their existing IRCTC user ID
and password. After booking tickets through the mobile
phones, users receive a reservation message with the ticket
details. The service charges are similar to e-tickets i.e. ` 10/-
per ticket for second/sleeper class and ` 20/- per ticket for all
other classes.
� Internet facility using Wi-Fi has been presently
planned in three rakes of Howrah- Rajdhani Express only, as a
pilot project. It is a satellite based system using Wi-Fi for
distribution of internet bandwidth in coaches and likely date
for implementation of this system is September 25, 2012. The
estimated implementation cost of the project is ` 6.30 crore.
� DC-AC traction conversion work on the last segment
of Western railway’s suburban section was completed on 5th
Feb’12. With this, WR has bidden farewell to 84 year old DC
traction on its suburban network which was started in 1928.
� New train #22604/22605 has been introduced between
Villupuram & Kharagpur from 17th
Feb.
� IR has received two national tourism awards on 29th
Feb. The Rewari steam locomotive shed was selected under
the category “Most unique / innovative tourism project” and
New Delhi railway station under the category “Tourist
friendly railway station”. Rewari shed has a rare collection of
9 working steam engines under one roof. NDLS station is
handling 5 lakh passengers daily.
� The first set of coaches for CMRL (Chennai
Metro) is getting ready at Alstom's plant at La Pa in
Brazil. Out of 168 (42x4) coaches, the first four or nine
rakes will be made in Brazil and shipped to Chennai
while the rest will be manufactured at a plant that is
being set up near Sri City on the Tamil Nadu-Andhra
Pradesh border.
� S.Rly has made it mandatory for the contractors to
display the price list of the standard food items at all
the stalls including the pantry cars of the trains. Rail
users are requested to make all payments as per the tariff
displayed and MRP printed on the packaged items.
� The Russian Prime Minister launched production
of wagons at the Tikhvin Railway Car Building Plant in
Leningrad Oblast on January 30, to produce a wheel set
every 4½ min and complete a wagon every 24 min.
