From the BridgeCommodore SUSAN HALLING

Thanks to all who signed the petition on the Restore the Delta website to reverse the decision to allow the purchase of 4 islands in the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta by the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California (MET). Because of the number of petitioners the MET is going to find themselves in court. The court date will be sometime in May.

According to the Restore the Delta website “Developing regional self-reliance is the best way to provide a more reliable water supply. This requires investment in water conservation; maximizing waste water reuse and groundwater recharge; while capturing storm water and gray water, and fixing leaky pipes.” This is it in a nutshell with many benefits for all Californians!

Now back to more water adventures…

This month my business

took me to Virginia Beach, VA; or, what the locals call VA Beach. Because I make this trip numerous times a year, I’m very familiar with VA Beach; so a girlfriend took me on a trip north of VA Beach to the Eastern Shore. This is definitely a resort area, but different than the West Coast, when winter hits, most of the resorts and restaurants shut down!

This is the longest stretch of undeveloped barrier islands on American’s East Coast. Two National Wildlife Refuges, a National Seashore and state and local parks preserve over 78,000 acres of pristine lands and hundreds of miles of coast line. This area was settled in the 1600’s, when the VA Eastern Shore was isolated from modern America. We drove the 23-mile Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel, which was built in 1964. This is the world’s largest bridge-tunnel complex, which includes two one-mile-long tunnels, three bridges, two miles of causeway and four manmade islands. By the way, don’t feel too bad about our bridge tolls, this trip cost us $13.00 each way!

Getting on the water

is the best way to see the islands. National Geographic Traveler’s list of the world’s top 20 places to visit in 2016 includes Tangier Island, a remote island in the middle of the Chesapeake Bay. The only way to reach the island is by boat or small plane. I was anxious to take the Onancock to Tangier ferry to hike around Tangier Island, when I realized its winter and that service won’t be provided until after Memorial Day.

Because I’m a huge seafood lover, I was pulled towards the VA oyster trail. On the VA Eastern Shore’s two coast lines they produce three of seven distinct VA oyster flavors. There’s over seventy restaurants including raw bars, seafood shacks, casual cafes and elegant bistros. There are also boat up restaurants, which I want to do on my next trip here.

Commodore standing by on 71…

From the WheelVice Commodore SHELIA KELLY

Our April cruise into Grindstone Joes was another amazing event. Thank you to Ken Humphrey our cruise leader and his crew. Coventina was the first boat to be in the area, but not at the cruise, since she was having some new flooring put in on Friday during a downpour of rain. She made it over to Grindstones Friday afternoon in time for Captain Roger to enjoy some relaxation time. I made it Saturday by car with my mom and her furrr child. Grindstones is such a great location to have guests especially the 4 legged kind, since there is so much open space and wonderful places to

go walking. The island is so beautiful with all the trees and flowers, and who doesn’t love an endless supply of ice at our fingertips. Our dinner Saturday night was deliciously prepared by the Humphrey/Calvin BBQ team. There were differently prepared BBQ and Smoker meats, 2 different levels of spiced rice and a whole table full of other items that will make your mouth water if I listed them all. After dinner we enjoyed Movies on the big screen, Thanks to Bruce Curley enterprises. The first movie was Captain Ron and the second movie was Mars Attacks which had a smaller crowd.( but they were just as enthusiastic) We always have so much fun and I am always amazed at the talents we have in the club to make it all possible. When they say “it takes a village” it is so true. Tower Park was having its own village of Military Vehicle Collectors Club’s. They take over the camp ground and

have lots of activates and camp sites set up in military fashion. We get to see so many types of vehicles, helicopters and boats from eras gone by. It is another reminder to thank those men and women who have given their all, for our freedom. I know none of us takes our lives for granted and we appreciate all we have, in friendship, health and freedom. Please take a minute to Thank someone who is important in your life and who makes a difference. Thanks to Steve, we had Vessel inspections on Saturday, we appreciated him setting this up for us. We take our safety seriously and this is another way to make sure we are as prepared as we can be, for any situation. I would like to see more of you wearing your life jackets when arriving or leaving a raft up. Safety first!

Cheers,

Shelia

From the DeckRear Commodore GEORGE OVEROSE

Thank you to Ken Humphery and his crew, The Sea Ray Boat Club had other great cruise at Gridstone Joe’s.

Joe Atello (or Attel - no one knows for sure), a Chilean in his early thirties, arrived in our Terminus area in a sail-rigged rowboat sometime around the 1906 earthquake. Joe told boating friends later that he had jumped ship in San Francisco harbor, going AWOL from the Chilean navy, after many years at sea.

Joe and his partner had parted ways, but not before his partner destroyed their indispensable grinding wheel. The grindstone fragment became a symbol

of Joe’s integrity and much later the source of the name. It can be found today permanently mounted on the deck.

With net-fishing banned, there was a need to augment his meager income. By brute strength and stamina he worked with shovel and wheelbarrow to build up his island and, most importantly, create a roadway link between the island and the levee. He planted trees, the initial flowers and snagged floating timbers to create the first docks which attracted early boaters from the valley and the bay area starting in the late 20’s.

But from all reports Joe was very stern about whom he would allow to dock. He had rules which he insisted be observed or one could forget about returning. He disliked sailboats, but loved his three dogs. Illiterate but intelligent, he was a stickler for good conduct, warning transgressors “If

you come back, I cut your line.” He kept his island immaculate and ruled it as a patriarch. Any boaters who respected that the island was his home had no trouble getting along with him, but those who treated his fief as a public picnic and dumping ground were unceremoniously asked to leave and admonished not to return. A “benevolent dictator”, he was proud of his little kingdom, reportedly taking in no more that $200 total per month from the boaters he deigned to admit to his few docks.

By 1929, according to extant photos, about nine power boats regularly docked at his island in the summer. With the onset of WWII his regular visitors from the bay and delta vowed to return, but on July 31, 1944 Joe died and was buried in Lodi by a few of his friends, Grindstone founders. Following the war, many of the same boaters returned and organized what later became the Grindstone Joe Association. They organized the fledgling group into a non-profit Corporation and arranged to acquire clear title to the “island” for the sole purpose of R & R.

Grindstone Joe’s 2016 had many unique situations happen. We arrived on Friday with rain storms most of the day, only to have fantastic weather for the weekend. Some that signed up for a Saturday arrival came on Friday and some that signed up for Friday arrival (and crew) arrived late Saturday afternoon as someone may have had the cruise slip their mind. At least Bruce has some ammo for this year’s roast already!

Friday began as a rainy, windy morning. Spare time beat everyone to the island, closely followed by Lew Sea the Plan B. During the late morning, boats started coming in quickly starting with Alexa IV, In His Time, Great Escape, Toy yoT, Calvino, Savasana, Vanilla Float, Happy Hours, Déjà vu Again, Mar Pacifico then the trio of Bom Vida, Absolut Getaway and Endless Weekend. Roger came in solo with Coventina a bit later after having new cockpit carpeting installed. Saturday morning brought in Deanna’s Dream with Bruce and his A/V equipment and finally Trowsnest later in the afternoon. Ernie and

Dana McIntyre made a cameo appearance to visit and attend the general meeting, appetizers in hand! Great to see they are still active, even without their Sea Ray.

After the continental breakfast, Saturday consisted of some aerial videography thanks to Doug Murray’s drone along with the SRBCNC drone. I am currently working on training to use the GoPro editing software so stay tuned. After our general meeting with great appetizers, chef Kathy & grill master

Bob Calvin (even I helped a bit), we prepped for a nice meal with yellow rice 2-ways, Cornish Game Hens & sides made its way to the tables to be enjoyed by all. Birthday/Retired guy, Roy Vinyard, supplied pie and ice cream for the entire group of 42 happy diners!

Prior to the feast, there were some games to be played, wait, where are the bean bags for the Cornhole game? Leave it to me to not think about the raccoons when setting the boards and bean bags on the deck Friday Night. They came and took away all but 2 bean bags overnight! Some believe they want to eat the dry beans, some believe they needed little pillows for the raccoon family. Either way, it was unfortunate. The Vinyards did bring the equipment for folks to make boats and have the squirt bottle boat races, thanks again guys!

Thanks to all who attended, it was fun. Maybe again next year???

Ken

Ed & Tech DirectorSteve Salzman

Today, microchips control most everything we use on a daily basis. Yet in our Sea Rays, we still rely on simple methods to provide critical functions. Alternators, sea water pumps and internal coolant pumps are driven by a flexible belt. Belt failure can result in engine overheating and electrical system shutdown.

Belts fall into two main types: V-belts and serpentine belts. Modern V-belts were invented by John Gates (of the Gates Rubber Co.) in 1917. V-belts are not really shaped like a V, but more like a trapezoid because it lacks the pointy end, and come in two variations: standard and notched. Notches increase belt flexibility, run

cooler, last longer and are preferred for accessory drive on marine engines. V-belts transfer power by means of friction between the sides of the belt and walls of the pulley. The narrow part of the belt should not contact the bottom of the pulley. If it does, it is worn out or improperly sized.

Serpentine belts, named by the way they snake around pulleys, are more accurately called multi or Micro-V belts. They are flat and have small raised sections running parallel to the length of the belt. They drive higher loads with less wear and run cooler than regular V-belts. A singular serpentine belt will replace multiple V-belts.

Your engine room check should include an inspection of the belts on your main engines and generator. You may have to remove a safety cover to get a good look at the belt. Do it! Look for proper belt tension (1/64

in. deflection for each 1 in. of span between pulleys), belt cracking, fraying or glazing (shiny surfaces). Any of these conditions warrant belt replacement.

Modern belts are made of a synthetic rubber known as EPDM and offer greater resistance to cracking and heat degradation. However, EPDM belts will lose material before signs of cracking appear. Look for gray or black dust in areas around the pulleys. Replace the belt if you find this. This dust will get sucked into your alternator (via the cooling fan on the pulley) and may cause overheating.

Whining or squealing belts when running the engine indicates slipping or misaligned belts. A simple way to tell: Spray water on the squealing belt. If it worsens, you have a tension issue; if it quiets you have an alignment issue. Either way, you have a problem.

See you downriver.

April Showers bring Mayflowers...and Pilgrims! :-) One thing you can always count on in spring on the Delta is the unpredictable weather! Which of course means boaters need to be prepared for anything! It’s been a difficult lesson, but the crew of In His Time is finally learning to bring their isenglass to every cruise. Of course it does help to have new canvas and glass that actually keeps the elements at bay! Other lessons learned......it’s good to carry an extra cord in case you need to lend it to a member who may have left theirs at their slip. ...it’s important to attach the end of your line to your boat before tossing to deckhands....bring movies you enjoy in case you end up watching the same one multiple times with your granddaughters....people like to share their special cookies and Reese’s peanut butter cups with little kids....bocce balls don’t roll well

on wet grass....apparently parking has more than one spelling (see photo)...SRBCNC members are some of the best folks around...as I heard Ken mention throughout the weekend...we are a family...no place else I’d rather be!PICYA Details*The yearbooks have arrived!
