SGVD President . . . Rita Aleman…909-284-2384…[email protected] Hello Members, Welcome back from the Districts Summer off. I hope you are all ready to get to work. These past few months have been spent on preparing for the year 2019-2020. We have much to look forward to. The District will be increasing Workshops for members who are interested in knowing more about procedures, bylaws, Leadership, Membership, and accounting. Last year, Abbey Howell submitted monthly tips on “keeping minutes” for clubs and they are still online in the past KEY’s messages. I have heard from four members who feel that going to our District website is too difficult for them to do. It’s hard for them to remember that the KEY comes out just after the first of the Month. I have heard from everyone else, that this was the best thing we could have done, allowing Clubs and Members, FREE access to the Districts Monthly KEY Newsletter. I would encourage anyone unable to get to the KEY, to pay the subscription mailing fee as soon as possible or have someone in your club make a copy for you. The KEY has so much information in it. You can access the District Monthly Calendar; you can see who the President’s are for each Club and the day that they meet. You can read Chairman reports and find out what projects they have for the District. You can see GFWC, CFWC and Committee Chairpersons. The San Gabriel Valley District Convention Report winners are listed. I am encouraging all clubs to make changes that are needed to stay on track. The change could be a simple change which later develops into a wonderful change. An example is Hospitality at your club. The worst feeling is to walk in and have people look at you as if you are at the wrong meeting. If your club has an assigned person to act as the door greeter, why not volunteer to be the member that the potential new member sits with during the meeting. We all enjoy that little extra effort in kindness and hospitality. Find creative ways to open your club up for new members. A simple change, a needed change. This was just an example, there are many small things that can be done to keep your club on track. The District is looking forward to Area B Conference and the Flyer is included in this KEY and August KEY. This year, La Crescenta Woman’s Club is hosting the Area B Conference. I look forward to your attending one or all of the San Gabriel Valley District Meetings and the District Calendar has when and where they will be. If you would like to volunteer for anything this year, let me know, I’m sure I can find the right place for you. Thank you, Rita Aleman, President SGVD SGVD 1ST Vice President…Rosette Clippinger…909-525-8828 Hi Ladies! I hope everyone had a wonderful and relaxing summer month. I will be attending this month the State Board Meeting, and will update you with report writing and Dean responsibilities.

I will still be conducting Workshops in the months of October and November, and plan a meeting with the project chairmen. Please feel free to contact me via email or phone; I’ll do my best to be at your service. Take some time to visit the CFWC and GFWC websites: WWW.CFWC.org WWW.GFWC.org Thank you all for all your hard work and service, Let’s continue to work together to another successful year. As your Dean I am here to help and do my best.

If you want happiness for an hour—take a nap. If you want happiness for a day—go fishing. If you want happiness for a month—get married. If you want happiness for a year—inherit a fortune. If you want happiness for a lifetime—help others.

- Chinese Proverb SGVD 2nd Vice President …Terry Perkins…909-89-7710 As we begin our new club year I though this poem would be good to share. I don’t know the author. Hopefully we all are active members.

Just Belong

Are you an active member,

The kind that would be missed?

Or are you just content that

Your name is on the list?

Do you attend the meetings and

Mingle with the flock?

Or do you stay at home and

Criticize and knock?

Do you take an active part

To help the work along?

Or are you satisfied-

To only "just belong"?

Page 5: 735 Windwood Drive Walnut, Ca 91789 September …...Gina Morales ~ 626-531-1535 Welcome back members! I hope that all of you are ready to continue all the great work you have been

Do you do your part with your

Hands upon the "stick?"

Or do you leave the work to

Others, then talk about the clique?

Think this over, Member, you know Right from wrong,

Are you an active Member,

Or do you "Just Belong? SGVD 3rd VP/Convention ... Linda Koontz …909-593-3906 https://www.marriott.com/events/start.mi?id=1562022811157&key=GRP Where did our summer go? I can’t believe September Board is right around the corner as clubs are gearing up to start a new year. As your Third VP/Convention (even though our Hotel is secured for 2020), I must now start working on quotes for Convention 2021, so your voting delegates can vote at our 2020 Convention. Please if you have any suggestions, don’t hesitate to email me with your ideas. Remember to calendar the dates of April 17-18, 2020 and early birds April 16, 2020. Please note the Convention link under my name above, to book your room for our 2020 Convention and follow my instructions: 1) Copy the link and paste inside the search box. 2) click on Book your group rate 3) in order to get the room you want you must click box that says check availability and choose two queens or King (both are the same rate). Queen sleeps 4 people and King can sleep 3 (one in the sofa bed). When you check in you need (if interested) to tell them you want the $10 voucher for the Breakfast Buffet and they will add it to your room. You must book by March 16th (I advise before deadline date and do it now). They do have more Kings available then Queens since they cater to a lot of business travelers. However, I am told we should not have a problem with Queens. Just letting you know that you may end up with a King if you don’t book early. Your Club Presidents should have received the Convention reservation link via email and passed it along to all club members. If you did not get this info, please let your President know and if there is still a problem, contact me. Have you planned your convention fundraisers to help defray member’s costs? Do you have a Convention Chairman? If not you should start your year off right and add that chairmanship to your club. I’d like to Thank Zita Rodriguez for agreeing to take care of Vendors for Convention. They will not be in a room by themselves, but out and about in the lobby area. With that being said we will have less Vendors probably around 8-9 on Friday and same on Saturday. In closing remember Convention 2020 will be Installation Year!

All Clubs should have received the info on Ads when I sent the Convention link info. I would like to see more than one or two. Congratulate your Incoming Officers and Outgoing Officers for a job well done. Congratulate your Club Member of the Year and Citizen of the Year and don’t forget your club officers. REMINDER: Convention Committee Meeting, Thursday, September 26th 9:30 at the Peppertree in Glendora. Have a safe and fun Labor Day! See you at Board, Linda

SGVD Parliamentarian . . . Mary Jo Kolakoski… 626-444-5717

Kudos to Toby Kahan for stepping in and serving as your Parliamentarian while I was out of commission, and a sincere thank you for all the cards, phone calls, visits, and flowers. We are truly a family. On a business note, I will need club bylaws from your Presidents at the September Board Meeting or as soon as they are available. I look forward to seeing all of you in September.

ADVOCATES FOR CHILDREN … Esthela Torres de Siegrist …626-442-0354

“Schools, Literacy, and Child Safety” All over our state, most schools will soon be in session again. Therefore, we must be extra careful when driving since so many children and youth will be walking or riding their bikes to school. Many students may be crossing the street for the first time and maybe even be jaywalking. When you see a school bus stopped and its red lights are flashing and/or it’s stop sign is up, you MUST stop. Failure to do so is a fine of $1,000. September is National Literacy Month, so let’s all engage in reading, especially reading to a child and discussing the book, the newspaper, or magazine article. Finally, unfortunately, little has been said about child abuse and SEX TRAFFICKING, until Mr. Jeffrey Epstein’s case has exploded and hit the front page. A new movie dealing with the ugly epidemic of sex trafficking has been released. It’s called “8 Days” an extremely graphic presentation of the ugly practice of sex trafficking. Everyone is encouraged to view the film and visit the website: https://www.millionkids.org/ which presents vividly and explicitly the growing problem of child abuse especially via Facebook. CONSERVATION…..Gina Morales ~ 626-531-1535 Welcome back members! I hope that all of you are ready to continue all the great work you have been doing. Conservation is something that each of us works on everyday. Do you recycle? Do you save water by taking shorter showers or finding ways to better water your lawn and garden? Do you support pet rescue or wildlife preservation? Do you contribute to Penny Pines reforestation? Do you bring your own coffee cup to SGVD and your home Women's Club meetings?

I am willing to bet that most of you answered "Yes" to all of these questions. These are just a few ways that you are contributing to your city's Conservation Program. Take the time to share with your chairman just how much you do. No effort is ever too small to report on. Together we can and will make a huge difference. I am pleased to continue to be your District Conservation Chairman and look forward to hearing about all the ways you are changing your community and the future. Wishing you all a great year! Gina Morales DOMESTIC VIOLENCE…………………..Mavis Hansen …626-441-6231 With hopes that your summer was wonderful and you are now eager to get started on all the many activities and events your club has planned for this coming year. I hope everyone enjoyed a wonderful summer break, and that you are ready to implement another year of meaningful charitable and community service projects.

If your club is still considering projects for the 2019-2020 club year, you might want to check out GFWC’s 2019 Top 10 Projects list for some inspiration. The list for

International Outreach is located here: www.gfwc.org/membership/2019-gfwc-top-projects/international-outreach-community-service-program What is your favorite project from that list? Were you, like me, pleasantly surprised to see that six of the ten Top Projects benefited outside organizations not officially partnered with GFWC? You may be familiar with the four GFWC International Outreach partners: Heifer International, Operation Smile, Shot@Life, and the UNICEF USA End Trafficking program. Were you familiar with the other six? One of the wonderful aspects about being a part of GFWC is that your philanthropy is not limited to only GFWC partners; however, GFWC partners can give you resources such as toolkits and fundraising kits customized for GFWC Club Members. I am happy to connect these partners and share their materials with all interested Club Members. LEADERSHIP CHAIRMAN…. Toby Kahan …909-720-3532 Do you have members that are in need of Leadership training or not sure they can step up to a leadership role in their busy schedule? SAVE THE DATE: Tuesday, October 29 at Pio Pico Woman's Club for the SGVD Mini Leads Seminar for all interested members who are current and future leaders. The following SGVD LEADS Candidates are willing to share what they learned at the CFWC Leads Seminar they attended. Come hear and learn something new from Kim Plater, Alice Slaughter, Rita Aleman, Luanne Arredondo and Denise Jackman. In order to accommodate all attendees, please let our SGVD Reservation Chairman, Zita Rodriguez, know your club count. Light refreshments will be served when doors open at 9am and we will begin promptly at 9:30am and plan to adjourn at noon. Any questions, please contact Toby Kahan, Leadership Chair 909-720-3532. Ruth Bader Ginsberg The Cat’s Meow

We know her as a Supreme Court Justice, a fighter for women’s equality in the justice system and as a leading voice for women’s rights. When she was hired as the second-ever female law professor at Rutgers University she was told she would be paid less than her male peers because “You have a husband who earns a good salary”. This experience may have begun her continuing fight for women’s equality.

Personally, Ruth and her husband Marty enjoyed a romantic marriage that lasted for 56 years until his death in 2010. It is said that they loved and admired each other very much. She has said that Marty, who became a renowned tax law expert, was so comfortable with himself that he never regarded her as a threat. “On the contrary, I think he may have figured out that he’s so good, so the person he picked to be his life partner has got to be the cat’s meow”. Throughout their life together, she remained the cat’s meow for her husband, Marty. Together they had two beloved children, Jane and James, both very accomplished and she is blessed with two grandchildren. As a women way ahead of her time, she continues to be an inspiration as evidenced by some of her most profound quotes:

• “Women will only have true equality when men share with them the responsibility of bringing up the next generation.”

• “My mother told me to be a lady. And for her, that meant be your own person, be independent.”

• “Fight for the things you care about but do it in a way that will lead others to join you.”

• “Every now and then it helps to be a little deaf….That advice has stood me in good stead. Not simply in dealing with my marriage, but in dealing with my colleagues.”

• Do things in life that would make life a little better for your community.” • “Don’t’ be distracted by emotions like anger, envy, resentment. These just

zap energy and waste time.”

On feminism she says, “I think the simplest explanation and one that captures the idea is a song that Marlo Thomas sang: “Free to Be You and Me.” “We should be free to develop our own talents, whatever they may be, and not be held back by artificial barriers, man-made barriers and certainly not heaven sent.” Ruth Bader Ginsberg’s life continues to be exceptional in every way. Regarding her position on the bench, she says has no plans to retire. And that is excellent news! CLUB MEMBER OF THE YEAR … Marian Hallin …[email protected] Greetings to all members. I hope that everyone had a relaxing and rejuvenating summer. It is time to begin the process of thinking about a choice for your Club Member of the Year for 2019. While your applications are not due until next March, it is time to think about possible candidates before you may have forgotten what they have done last winter, spring or even this summer.

Requirements are changing back to using a fifty-word narrative of why your candidate is deserving of this award. No pictures will be required for this coming year. It can be a challenge to limit your narrative to fifty words. This means that you will want to highlight the most important reasons for choosing your nominee. Last year caused confusion for many so I hope to make the requirements clear from the beginning of this new club year. I welcome questions at any time. Please feel free to email – [email protected] or phone – 626-282-9210. Last year we had fifteen clubs nominate a Club Member of the Year and we had outstanding candidates that were recognized by you and at the SGVD Convention. It is so encouraging to see the dedication and commitment made by our members and I hope that we may increase the number of honorees next year at our Convention for SGVD. SGVD Website … Terry Perkins ~Webmaster…[email protected] Remember—The KEY is now available on the website. You can download your copy there. Please visit our website and check to make sure your club information is correct. If you have a website and/or Facebook page please let me know the addresses to add to the website. Thank You. ****For those who want to receive the KEY via US mail next year, please mail me the names and checks, or you can give the them to Rosette Clippinger at the June Board meeting.
