SGVD President . . . Rita Aleman…909-284-2384…[email protected] Hello Members, The next part of “The Collect” is: “Teach us to put into action our better impulses, straightforward and unafraid.” Impulse applied to an object produces an equivalent vector change combined with the same momentum and same direction. So if you are guided towards helping or volunteering, go ahead and do so. You want to feel that if you volunteer for something that you will have help from fellow members. We gain trust with our clubs, we begin to realize that the actions we take, will be supported by like members. Straight forward and unafraid. Now for my message: I would like to thank everyone who participated in the Birthday Council. A special thank you to our Past District President’s, Margery Spillman, Mavis Hansen, Linda Koontz and Toby Kahan. I always enjoy hearing these leaders speak. Marianne Jennings and Jeanne Long did an amazing job organizing this event. There room was very full and I am looking for a larger room for next year. The Fashion Show should be done by the time this Newsletter comes out. I know that there has been a lot of work behind the scenes to give the District a wonderful Fashion Show event. I am hoping that your Clubs enjoyed the Opportunity Themed Baskets this year, I know I heard that it made things a lot easier when buying something valued at 25.00 and the District provided the baskets. My thanks to the Fashion Show Team, Nena Garduno, Beverly Clifton, Marianne Jennings, Linda Terrazas, and Diane Sexton. Thank you to the Rowland Heights Hostesses. Carol Huntwork and Rita Even with the Door Prizes. Pat Borchard, my thanks for the Kindness Angel recognition. This was the San Gabriel Valley District’s Annual Fashion Show and it’s 28 Clubs all participated and for that I am grateful and proud. Spring Council is March 8th and the deadline for reservations has passed. I do hope you were able to purchase your tickets. This will be at Covina Woman’s Club and we will have this a catered event. The students that will be preforming should have someone from the Club they represent, show up early enough to stay with the student. Be willing to ask a student and his parents if they need help or direction. We all need to remember that they are our guests to this event. I understand that this years Convention is way up in reservations and you only have until March 21st to get your room reservations in. There is going to be a lot going on, workshops and B.A.C.A. and USO and entertainment and vendors galore. I’m sure you will enjoy yourselves, so get your room reservations in now. I wanted to see how a BINGO game would do at our last District Meeting and we played one game, and we had a first place winner and then continued on until we had a second place winner. The entire game took 8 minutes. I have spoken to a few women that felt the game was fun and it gave those seated at the table to quietly chit and chat and enjoy a stress free game of BINGO. I enjoyed it and I hope you did too. Thank you all so much for the invitations to your clubs. I have received over 6 invitations to come and visit and I am attending each and every one. Thank you Remember, we are “Open Hearts” and we have renewed our spirit!

SGVD 1ST Vice President…Rosette Clippinger…909-525-8828 March is said to start like a “lion” and end like a “lamb”. Well if this past month is any indication, the SGVD will be roaring all month, and you can just forget the “lamb”. I attended the California State Board Meeting, held In San Diego on the second week in February. After reading all of the reports that all the clubs of SGVD submitted, I was amazed at the amount of projects this district has in operation, and is currently operating on a ongoing basis. We have 1,223 Total projects and 103,083 total volunteer hours. I think this is outstanding, and I certainly believe we all have a right to ROAR!! I thank all of the clubs for submitting their reports, and doing such a fine job in 2018. Now we have 2019 before us and being the third month in, we have the following events are scheduled: SGVD Spring Council is on this month, where we will hear the Music Scholarship participants and view the submitted artwork and photography of members and students. SGVD Convention is coming up in April, I encourage all members to attend the San Gabriel Valley District Convention. We will be honoring our Clubwoman, and Citizen of the year. Club awards will, also be on Report Writing. BURRR, its cold outside, but ladies just keep on ROARING and you will be warm and able to enjoy your clubs. Thank you for all you do. SGVD 2nd Vice President …Terry Perkins ~ 909-895 7710…[email protected]

THIRTY-POINT MEMBERSHIP PLAN – Part 2 11. Enclose a special form or addressed post card in your monthly newsletter requesting members submit names and addresses of prospective members. 12. Make personal contact with the new members from last year and ask for their referrals. New members are likely to open up new circles of women for you to contact. 13. Staff a membership table at all meetings and have application blanks and club/Federation information available. 14. Have a guest book at every meeting and function, and have every guest sign up with name, address and phone number. Follow up immediately with a "thank you for coming" letter and an invitation to join. 15. Celebrate your club and Federation accomplishments but talk about your present and upcoming activities - provide members with something to WANT to do.

16.Create a club/Federation profile including an APPLICATION BLANK. Tell about your club's history, past accomplishments and upcoming projects. Personally hand an application blank/profile to EVERY GUEST at every meeting and get these application blanks back before they leave the meeting. 18. Make it easy for prospective members to join. Are your dues too high? Are your requirements too rigid? Does your membership application look like a mortgage application? What do they get for an initiation fee? Do you VOTE on accepting members? 19.ASSIGN POST MEETING HOSTESSES to greet guests after the meeting is over, to tell them how pleased they are this person came to the meeting and that they hope they will join - let each prospective member know you want them! 20. Stress membership at every meeting and include a membership application as part of every newsletter.

Membership Awards Reminder If you have members you are celebrating 25 years or 50 years in Federation, please give me or email me the information by Mach Board meeting. Terry Perkins [email protected] SGVD/CFWC will provide a certificate and pin to award at convention for 50-year members. Clubs will need to order the pins for 25-year members, SGVD will provide the certificate. Pins can be ordered from the WC website: https://www.gfwc.org/membership/recognition-pins/ SGVD 3rd VP/Convention ... Linda Koontz …909-593-3906 Time is really flying by and before you know it Convention will be upon us. I hope you had a lovely Valentines Day! We had our Convention Committee meeting February 1st which was very productive. There were a couple of changes since you received the Call, which only affects your Fish choice (now Salmon) and we have different vegetarian choices and not Pasta Primavera for all meals…only two. All Presidents’ received the updated Meal/Registration form and if you didn’t get it or have the old one, you can just scratch off Cod and write Salmon for your fish choice. Please (if not using the link) to book your room you must call the 800 number and not the direct number at the Hotel. Make sure to use the codes provided below. By calling the Hotel, all they will do is transfer you to the 800 number. As of this newsletter, they have added 6 more rooms to Thursday, since we exceeded our original count given for that night. According to the Hotel, our rooms being booked are taking a different direction, which means more are booking Thursday & Friday nights and leaving Saturday after the evening session. If this be the case, I urge you to book now. Please once again, I am reminding you if booking by phone, you must book reservations through Marriott at: 800-750-0981. The Code you must use is one of the following: SGVSGVA King Room Only one (if available can reserve more). SGVSGVB Room with Two Double Beds ****Please note cutoff date to book rooms is March 21st. Remember if you don’t book by March 21st, those rooms will be released to the public and you will pay a higher rate if you’re able to get a room. District for Saturday dinner, so please make sure they don’t pay and just write “comp” on that line. As I have already reported we have a deadline to abide by with the Hotel for their payment, which is only one week from Spring Council. So to avoid paying $25 for late registration instead of $10, please have everything to Abbey no later than March 8th. Remember if you won’t be at Spring Council and no one from your club will be, then you must make arrangements with Abbey to get your paperwork to her before the 8th. You can also mail to Abbey (she is in your yearbook), but she must receive by March 8th. Remember all Hotels have their own policy and this one is firm on their deadline. Please note there is no District Board meeting in April due to our Convention, so Spring Council is it! I thank you in advance by supporting District and abiding by our deadline date. Opportunity Baskets, Tami Miller will be at the Hotel Thursday night and anyone arriving then may give their Basket to her. Remember, value of $25 and all new items. Please list items in the basket and your club name. Tami will be in the conference room when you register starting at 7:00 (after dinner). Speaking of Dinner, I will have a signup sheet at Spring Council for those interested. We will have dinner at the Hotel around 5:00 PM, so we can relax before registration begins. Door Prizes: Please bring door prizes to the Spring Council (value $10) and give to Rita Even or Carol Huntwork. They will take them at Convention, but prefer getting them before. Ticket Sellers I only have two sellers and need three selling tickets at the door each session and members to sell tickets on the floor. We will be selling tickets for the Opportunity Baskets, 50/50 which will be 6 for $5. Another drawing for $5 will give you a chance to win an item valued over $300! Thank you Nancy Begg for this special donation! You may purchase all three tickets at the door or from ticket sellers on the floor. Will have sign-up sheets at our Spring Council for more ticket sellers that I really need and if you feel that you would like to sign up for more than one session please do so. Denim Vests don’t forget your denim vests (child size thru teen). These will be collected at the lunch session Friday for BACA (Bikers Against Child Abuse). President Rita confirmed the President will be speaking at our Friday lunch session. Trust me BACA is incredible with the work they do and I look forward to their presentation and giving them the support they well deserve! You are invited to wear Denim (this session only) for BACA. Please look over your Convention call and I hope to see a lot of Red, White & Blue for our USO at Saturday lunch. Remember both evenings are “after 5…let’s dress up…..See you at Spring Council. Happy St. Patrick’s Day…… SGVD Recording Secretary …. Abbey Howell… 909-348-3779

3rd Month for "KEY" Workshop Classes - Listening Action Points of Minutes Let's start March taking perfectly documented minutes by Listening with a keen ear. Pin point all Action Points. This will ensure people have a common understanding of what the meeting was about..

Pin point on your notes all action summary 3. Document decisions, changes and request 4. Send minutes out in a timely manner, sooner is always better.

Advocates for Children … Esthela Torres de Siegrist …626-442-0354

“Today’s Children and Youth? Tomorrow’s Leaders!” Stacey Tauscher once opined: “We worry about what a child will become tomorrow; yet, we forget that the child is someone today.” How true that is. For this reason, if falls upon us to provide today’s children and youth with the tools and resources that will enable them to succeed at the present moment and for every moment thereafter. Reading to children provides a great beginning; but must include books that they find exciting and of value. Remember to ask them questions; have them ask you questions, too. The Internet contains a host of valuable educational resources, but also holds many potential dangers as well. That’s why cybersecurity is of utmost importance. So, be on guard and NEVER let youngsters engage with the Internet unsupervised. There are blockers to keep out unsavory websites—but some can still appear. Here are a few tried and true resources for adults and children. Ever hear of the Khan Academy? It’s been around for a few years now and continues to grow. Sponsored by Bill Gates, it is free and provides thousands of lessons in math, reading, language arts, social science, and technology. AND IT’S SAFE! For us adults, who have frequent contact with children and youth, it’s highly recommended that we join the local PTA (And you don’t have to have children in the school) and become active members. Also, schools are in great need of volunteers, especially as mentors for children who need extra help. If you wish to be updated about education, visit capta.org and also California PTA’s wonderfully rich resource (in English and Spanish). It’s free and online: ed100.org. It explains in simple terms educational issues in one hundred five-minute lessons. You’ll learn where our taxes go to the schools: CAPTA, LCAP, LCFF—all the educational buzzwords. So, in closing, let’s all do our part: today’s children and youth are tomorrow’s leaders. Let’s help them become effective, caring, informed as they grow into adulthood. THISI IS OUR CHARGE!

The CFWC Quick Bytes, February 11, 2019 issue, (middle of the 4th page) lets you click to download a Flyer and information on the new Domestic Violence Prevention “PURSE” project. The GFWC Signature Program Committee is challenging our State Federations to raise awareness and Benefit domestic violence shelters in their states by having a ”purse contest” at their annual state conventions. This chairman encourages all clubs (even if you do not have A Domestic Violence Awareness and Prevention Chairman) to enter their purses, filled with items, to be donated to their local shelters. The purses will also be used as centerpieces for district and state conventions. Many of the clubs currently have, or have had purse Projects. Keep up the good work! Soles4Souls is the beneficiary of one of GFWC’s 2018 - 2020 Grand Initiatives. The goal is for 1,000 pairs of shoes to be donated by clubs. GFWC Tennessee adopted this initiative as a state project. They set a goal of collecting 1,241 pairs of shoes, one for every GFWC Tennessee member, by the end of 2018, and they beat that goal!* GFWC is a partner of Soles4Souls, working to distribute free shoes to people in need and during times of disaster. Soles4Souls creates sustainable jobs by distributing shoes around the world. Soles4Souls’ micro-enterprise model gives people living in deep poverty in developing nations the opportunity to sustain a small business by selling the shoes. One pair of tax-deductible donated shoes could provide five meals in developing nations, so every pair counts! Watch this brief video for more details: https://youtu.be/LwhjFmquyS0 HOW CAN YOUR CLUB PARTICIPATE?

1. Registering with Soles4Souls is one way that your club can participate. Register your club through the Soles4Souls website at soles4souls.org.

2. Your club will be assigned a Soles4Souls representative within three business days, but while you wait to hear from her/him.

3. Keep the “Thank You” webpage open that displays immediately after the registration is processed and download the marketing toolkit. If you close it accidentally, your assigned representative can resend it.

4. Determine if there is a drop-off location within driving distance. If not, a Soles4Souls representative will be in touch to plan logistics.

5. Contact Stephanie Hathaway at [email protected] if you have not heard from your assigned representative within three business days.

6. Share your success stories or your club's involvement in GFWC's cooperative giving project with Soles4Souls by emailing [email protected].

WOMEN’S HISTORY and RESOURCE CENTER……Diane Sexton…..626-316-0044

National Women’s History Month National Women’s History Month was established in 1987 as a way to celebrate women across the nation and their efforts to make the country, and world, a better place for women of all ages and races. We highlight the contributions of women to events in history AND contemporary society. During this month, we take time to look back and honor the many achievements of women through history AND the vast strides made by women today. How to Observe Take time to learn more about women’s history month. If you do, chances are it’ll help you truly understand and appreciate the strength and determination of women across the country over hundreds of years. Use #NationalWomen’sHistoryMonth or #Women’sHistory to post on social media and show the world how you are celebrating. To this day, some people don’t fully understand the leaps and bounds women have made in the United States. There is a long list of strong, brave, powerful, and influential women who played prominent roles in getting us to where we are today. I feel strongly that most of you reading this article are a powerful influence on the women and girls within the scope of your own world. So let’s celebrate! The internet is full of ideas on how we can celebrate women during the month. Here are some of the ideas found on various Women’s History Month websites: A Celebration of Ideas: Biographies For the daughter, niece, granddaughter or another girl in your life, give her a biography of a woman who accomplished important goals in her life. If you can match the woman to the girl’s interests, all the better. (If you don’t know her interests, celebrate the month by getting to know them.) Spread the Word Casually drop into conversation, a few times this month, something about a woman you admire. Get Involved For your next club meeting, find a new organization that supports an issue that your club members think is important. Commemorate a woman in your club who is helping make the world better. Local Travel Plan a trip to a site honoring women’s history or women’s art. There might be an interesting venue within or near your own community. Make it a day to share with others.

Donate Donate to a women-focused charity and don’t keep that donation quiet. Encourage others to do the same. Charities to consider are Women’s Education, Health, Social Services, and Women’s Rights Fundraisers Host a fundraiser for a women’s charity. This is a way to go a step beyond donating and get the whole community involved. Inspirational Quotes Once a week, share an inspiring quote from a woman. Do It All Again Think ahead to next year’s Women’s History Month. Initiate a project for 2020 and plan ahead. Many women in history have changed the world for the better. They broke out of the mold and courageously changed their lives and the lives of hundred’s of others. Many women today are changing the world right now…….and you may be one of them. “Do not wait for someone else to come and speak for you. It’s you who can change the world” Anonymous CLUB MEMBER OF THE YEAR … Marian Hallin …[email protected] March 8th is the due date for your application, picture (about 5x7) and information for your Club Member of the Year. Applications can be found on pages 60 and 61 in your District Yearbook. Please include several adjectives that describe your chosen member. It is not necessary to do a narrative or follow the instructions about Categories of Activities, as the District quit the practice of choosing a single most important member of the year several years ago, all chosen members will be honored equally. All of us have special members that commit themselves to our clubs and it is simply a nice gesture to let them know that they are appreciated. These members are the ones who say “yes” whenever possible and so often help without being asked. I hope that all clubs have selected a deserving member that we can honor at Convention. I look forward to hearing who your club has chosen as your special Club Member of the Year. SGVD President’s Scrapbook Chairman: Pat Borchard - 909-576-4382) Scrapbook pages for President Rita’s scrapbook were distributed at the January 25, 2019 Birthday Council. Each club and section receieved one(1) page to embellish, decorate, create(front and back), for this scrapbook. Each plastic sleeve has scrapbook pages included. Please use what you were given. Please do not use a different plastic sleeve since all sleeves are not created equal. Be as creative as you wish. Include pictures of club activities that our SGVD President may have attended or just include pictures of your club’s activities. Make the page a memory for our District President. The turn in deadline for your scrapbook page is no later than March 8, 2019, at Spring Council. I cannot accept your page at convention. If you happen to have your page completed by the SGVD Fashion Show, you may turn it over to me then. If your wait until Spring Council, please turn your page into Linda Koontz, since I am unable to attend day meetings. Hope all of you have fun creating a memory page for President Rita. Please call if you have any questions.
