She will bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins.” When Joseph woke from sleep, he did as the angel of the Lord commanded him: he took his wife. — Matthew 1:20-21, 24 The Gospels do not relate a single word of Joseph, the husband of Mary. He is a silent, loving figure standing in the shadows during the season of Advent, coming into view only in the final days of this season of watching and waiting. Although our Catholic Tradition has often referred to Joseph as the “just” or “righteous man” (cf. Matthew 1:19), the story related in the Gospel for this fourth Sunday of Advent presents a different facet of Joseph’s character: obedience. Taken from the Latin words ob and audire, our English word “obedience” means to listen or to hear. But this sense of listening doesn’t mean that we simply take in and then follow the commands of another person. Obedience like that shown by St. Joseph is a deeper sort of awareness and intentionality. Joseph listened, yes, but he listened with his heart. This is the kind of obedience that we Christians are called to in our relationship with God and with one another. As we have journeyed through the season of Advent, we’ve heard promises from prophets and priests. We have received admonitions from St. Paul, urging us to be patient and to hope. More than that, Jesus has reminded us that he will come again in judgment and power in the fullness of time to bring about the full realization of the reign of God. These have been days of hope, expectation, waiting, perseverance, and, yes, obedience. Because, like Joseph and Mary who said yes to what was asked of them, God has also been asking something of us in these Advent days. Ultimately, our Advent journey has been a time of discipleship. We are being asked to trust that God has kept and continues to keep the promises made to our spiritual ancestors so many centuries ago. And part of this trust is our awareness of how Christ is present and active among us today. FOURTH SUNDAY OF ADVENT (A) December 22nd, 2019 - Is 7:10-14; Rom 1:1-7; Mt 1:18-24

“Joseph, son of David, do not fear to take Mary as your wife, for that which is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. She will bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus, for he will

save his people from their sins.” When Joseph woke from sleep, he did as the angel of the Lord commanded him: he took

his wife. — Matthew 1:20-21, 24 The Gospels do not relate a single word of Joseph, the husband of Mary. He is a silent,

loving figure standing in the shadows during the season of Advent, coming into view only

in the final days of this season of watching and waiting.

Although our Catholic Tradition has often referred to Joseph as the “just” or “righteous

man” (cf. Matthew 1:19), the story related in the Gospel for this fourth Sunday of Advent

presents a different facet of Joseph’s character: obedience.

Taken from the Latin words ob and audire, our English word “obedience” means to listen

or to hear. But this sense of listening doesn’t mean that we simply take in and then follow

the commands of another person. Obedience like that shown by St. Joseph is a deeper sort

of awareness and intentionality. Joseph listened, yes, but he listened with his heart. This is

the kind of obedience that we Christians are called to in our relationship with God and with

one another.

As we have journeyed through the season of Advent, we’ve heard promises from prophets

and priests. We have received admonitions from St. Paul, urging us to be patient and to

hope. More than that, Jesus has reminded us that he will come again in judgment and power

in the fullness of time to bring about the full realization of the reign of God. These have

been days of hope, expectation, waiting, perseverance, and, yes, obedience. Because, like

Joseph and Mary who said yes to what was asked of them, God has also been asking

something of us in these Advent days.

Ultimately, our Advent journey has been a time of discipleship. We are being asked to trust

that God has kept — and continues to keep — the promises made to our spiritual ancestors

so many centuries ago. And part of this trust is our awareness of how Christ is present and

active among us today.

OUR FAITH COMMUNITIES

ENGLISH COMMUNITY EVENTS

The Christmas Season can mean many things for each of us. The birth of Christ, the heart of Christmas, reminds us of the depth of God's love for the human family. As Catholic Christians we will always be reminded each Christmas how our faith, our very lives and relationships are shaped by the Lord's love that is born for us and within us. It is Christ’s love that wants to find room in our inns and to dwell there deeply. It is Christ's love that is the light that shatters the darkness and shadows that can surround us. It is the love born into our world, into our hopes and longings, that we sing our songs, offer our gifts, gather as families near and far, and taste the generous bounty of goodness that Christ, our Messiah brings. This Christmas let us say that we will live for the One

who’s stable is a throne, and whose family; Mary and Joseph, the shepherds and angels will be reflected within our St. Mary's parish family. May you and yours have a Blessed Christmas and that it be filled with prayers, acts of kindness and an awareness of those who feel alone in this season. Sincerely in Christ, your priests, deacons and St. Mary's staff.

THANK YOU!

Thank you to all who contributed to

POLICY ON ENVELOPES ASSIGNMENT

Our apologies to all families that were expecting to receive envelope boxes and couldn’t find their name, and to all the

families that got their names wrong on the envelopes due to inadequate information in our files. Filling out St. Mary’s census

form can remedy this. If you haven’t done so this year, please fill out the form even if you have been a parishioner for a long

time. We have been pulling this information from four separate data entries that had not been updated for many years.

Envelopes that are assigned to families showed they contributed recurrently during 2019. This includes families that requested a box, and

families with a school stewardship vouches on file.

If you want to have a box of envelopes ready for 2021, please contact the office at 336-272-8650 from 8:30 a.m. till 1:30 p.m. Monday

through Friday.

For all of our families that are contributing with loose checks, we are grateful for your contribution. Please let us know, if this is your preference

so we can remove your name from our envelope box list. Each box of envelopes costs: $4.00.

Please, do not share your envelopes with other families, this creates confusion and we cannot guarantee the amount will be recorded

correctly.

The use of a box of envelopes helps your parish to sustain its Catholic programming and benefits you, should you wish to keep a record of

your yearly contributions for tax purposes.

It is always with gratitude for your generosity that I thank you and pray that you and yours will have a Blessed Christmas Season. Fr. Bill
