Jamaican Mission: A Labor of Love This last week I traveled to Jamaica with the West African Community Mission for a medical mission to the wonderful people of Jamaica. The mission team comprised of doctors, nurses, scribes, physician assistants and volunteers. I witnessed members of this team doing amazing work for total strangers. They got up very early, did their morning prayers, took a quick breakfast, moved to the site, setup the clinic, worked under difficult conditions, and then packed up the boxes and equipment to move to a different location. Team members endured inconveniences with no complaints. I saw them treat the local people with utmost warmth and respect. They spoke consoling words of encouragement to them, treated their wounds, administered medications to them, gave gifts of toys and sacramental items for their spiritual life, and prayed for them.

There was no sign of condescension toward the locals. On the contrary, there was a sense of genuine compassion, love, respect and appreciation of the people. There was a consciousness of oneness and brotherhood. It was Christianity at its best! I felt the presence of God in the whole process. In spite of all the challenges and difficulties we faced, the team spirit was high and the joy was palpable. There were clear signs of the fruits of the Holy Spirit as St. Paul indicated in Gal 5:22-23.

It was definitely a life-changing experience for me. This experience gave me perspective and clarity as to what matters the most. I realized that it is the heart, love, honesty and humility we bring to what we do that brings our faith to life. It is these things that make our faith attractive to other people. I also realized that, although the majority of our team members were non-Catholics, nevertheless, we became united at the level of love, humility and service to our neighbors. It was as if our doctrinal and theological differences disappeared. It got me thinking, could our ecumenical efforts be more effective if we emphasized love, humility and selfless service to our neighbors? Could our parish flourish more, could our faith become more transformative if we brought love, humility and selflessness to everything we do in the church and in our personal lives? I feel inspired and fired up to do more for God and his people.

"God works in mysterious ways." I have heard and said this phrase many times in my life but I have not felt the full weight of this expression until now. I really wanted to go with Dr. White and his team to Jamaica for their medical mission trip and I had originally planned to go. However, I had something in my personal life that I wasn’t sure was going to let me go on this trip and because of it and the fear of the unknown I decided not to go. There were a few times after that, Dr. White had asked me if still wanted to go and as much as I wanted to, still the fear of the unknown kept me from going. Then, one night I mentioned to my wife that I had a dream that Dr. White sent me a text at the last minute, saying that someone had bailed out. He said, I could still go if I wanted to. My wife and I laughed about it and the improvability that it would never happened so we went on with our evening. Then the next morning as my wife was getting ready to leave for a subbing job I received a text from Dr. White saying that there was a spot open and if I wanted to go. I showed the text to my wife who turned to me and said “There is no fighting this anymore. Just go, obviously God wants you to”. I immediately let Dr. White know that I was in and just like that, I’m going to Jamaica. I am excited for this opportunity, however I never fundraised for it. I would like to do my part to cover my cost for this trip as well as to cover the cost of the last minute change in the ticket. This is where you all come in. I am looking for donations . I am looking to raise about $2,000 for this trip. If you would like to donate please drop off your donations in the rectory in an envelope marked youth ministry. Please make any checks out to W.A.C.M. leave the memo line blank so that you can receive a tax donation credit. Thank you all for your support and I will be collecting money during and after the trip to make up my cost. With your help, we can make this happen.

Did You Know? Parents are in a unique position to know about not only their own children, but their children’s friends. If you are a trusted parent, your child’s friend may come to you with secrets. What do you do if a child tells you about abuse? As an adult, it’s critical that you remain calm, and don’t overreact. Child victims are often frightened and confused, and your confusion and anger does not help their situation.Your concern and support, however, will affirm the child in important ways and can help begin the healing process for a child victim who has suffered at the hands of a predator. To learn more about steps to take if a child tells you about abuse, email [email protected].
