Take a stroll in your parkCouncillor John Lambtook a stroll aroundthe park as he joinedan event organised by

the 'Friends of AshtonPark'. The event wasan open invitation tolocal residents to

come along and give their views about whatimprovements or changes they would like to see inthe park. The event was well attended and clearly alot of people and local organisations make regularuse of this attractive green open space.

Currently the new play equipment for children isbeing installed and the friends of the park haveplans for further enhancing this valuable community

    facility.

Councillor Lamb said "It was fantastic to see suchdedication and enthusiasm from the friends of thepark. They are keen to get local residentsinvolved.Quite rightly thisopen public space needsto be claimed by thepeople of Ashton uponMersey to ensure the parkmeets their recreationaland leisure needs."

Building for tomorrowAround the Ashton upon Mersey Ward we seem tohave more than the average number of large sitesthat are in a state of transition, several of which areplanned for people in their later years. The schemeon Oakfield Road (McCarthy & Stone) is wellunderway and the former Pictor School site hasplanning permission. A potential scheme onAshlands has not received planning approval.Elsewhere, the site of the former Atkinson Court

care home, off Atkinson Road will most likely soonbe considered for a new scheme by TraffordHousing Trust (THT) who have applied forgovernment funding towards an Extra Care facilityof new build homes for older people which willfeature various additional services for residents onsite. Each of these schemes is aimed at delivering highquality accommodation and services for olderpeople, with the very latest national standards. Asour population is living longer, it is encouraging thatmore provision for the various needs of old age is

being located in the heart of our community. The transition from one type of property to anotheroften involves an element of disruption locally, before and during construction. However, thereward will be in the longer term, when the needs ofolder people are more likely to be met locallybecause of provision such as these schemes.

    Cross Street Possibilities

Ashton upon Mersey councillors have welcomed therenewed prospect of a re-development schemehappening on the blighted Cross Street site whichfeatures several derelict commercial propertiesincluding the old Waggon and Horses pub. Aplanning application has been submitted whichcomprises a mixed scheme of retail, commercialand residential premises being constructed on thesite. This particular site is deceptively large, being madeup of these different former business premises. Ithas been problematic, not just from vandalism but

also because of the shabby appearance of theproperties fronting the A56, an arterial routethrough Trafford into Manchester. Consequently indoes not reflect well on the borough.More than three years ago there were hopes of aworthwhile re-development by a well known housebuilder company taking place on the site but planswere scuppered by the recession. This newproposal again raises hopes and there will be manystages to be completed before any obviousprogress can be made. Meanwhile, your three Wardcouncillors are monitoring developments and they

have already held a meeting with senior planningofficers to review the proposals.

Cllr Brian Rigby says We are alltoo aware that this site has been acause for concern for some time.Progress is painfully slow for anumber of reasons, many of whichare beyond the Councils control. However, it remains one of ourpriorities to see this area re-developed and brought up to a

standard which no longer blights our street scene and

    the neighbouring properties.
