Its a great idea. It gives stu-dents some identification in the community. Its also cheaper for parents.

Yeah, it makes sense for every-one to wear uniform.

    James Booth, Nelson.

I think its fair. Every other school in the region has to wear uniform.

Uniform can look smart, but Im not sure if it reflects Nay-lands philosophy. I can see both sides.

they will get a say in all the finer details, right down to the type of chairs they get. They really want to be based somewhere which will allow them to grow, and the community centre will allow them to do that, says Paul.Members of the Stoke Rugby Club, who are helping to fund the facility, are also happy with the design. Stephen Fitzgerald, who has been part of the club since he was five years old, says that he thinks its great. Its a good over-all design for the Stoke commu-nity, and great for the rugby club to have a proper space.

Stoke business owner Mary-Jane Bailey of Lemon Tree Lane is also impressed with the design. Its nice, I quite like it, she says. I think its going to make a focal point for Stoke, which we dont have. The whole place is so dis-jointed at the moment.Across the road from Green-meadows Park, at the Society of Saint Vincent de Paul, shop keep-ers Jacky Evans and Ann Hep-pell were also enthusiastic about the plans. I quite like the look of it, its probably what Stoke re-ally needs, says Jacky. As long as there are plenty of ramps, adds Ann.Stoke residents, both young and

old, also thought the design was fitting for Stoke. It looks nice and

modern. It fits in with the other new buildings around here, comments younger resident, Ruby Hall. 90 year old Nathalie Baird, who lives at Sum-

merset Retirement Village, hadnt heard about the development, but was happy to hear there would be a new community facility to lift the area, which she describes as depressing. Its rather bad in Stoke, lots of shops have gone. To her, the design was fine, with her only concern being that it was

earthquake proof. The councils Community Serv ices Committee met last Thurs-day morning to discuss the con-cept plans, and Councillor Pete Rainey, chair of the committee, says that the design was well re-ceived. During the meeting, extra features were added to the de-sign, which have now pushed the original $5.6 million budget over $6 million. We want to add a bi-fold door to split the main hall into two so it can be a flexibile space, and we are also adding a photovoltaic solar power genera-tor he says. This will push the budget over $6 million, but we want to get it right.A cafe for the facility was also de-bated. There is room for a cafe to go in, but it hasnt been green- lighted, says Pete. The potential cafe site will be used as a meeting room for the meantime.

House prices have risen only slightly as real estate agents re-port huge demand for homes in Nelson and Tasman.Mark Rumsey of First National says theyve seen huge growth over the past 12 months, with his firm selling three times as many homes in the past fort-night, compared to what they did last year. What were seeing is unpre-sented demand, especially in the $280,000-$440,000 price range, he says. The QV House Price Index for June shows Nelson residential property values rose by 0.7 per cent over the past three months and the average home value in the city is now $413,239.Nelson home values have in-

creased 3.2 per cent year on year and they are now 7.9 per cent higher than the previous peak of 2007.Residential property values in the Tasman District decreased by one per cent over the past three months and the average value across the region is now $415,394.However, Tasman District home values rose 1.2 per cent year on year and they are now 3.4 per cent higher than the previous peak of 2007.QV Nelson Registered Valuer Richard Kolff says sales num-bers and listings continue to fall around the region which is quite normal for this time of year as we hit the middle of winter.

Recent decreases in the Of-ficial Cash Rate and floating interest rates by some banks, coupled with an outlook of continued low interest rates, is also helping to fuel demand for homes in the low to medium level price brackets, he says.Richard says there have been regular reports of large num-bers of buyers turning up at open homes of new listings, of-ten resulting in multiple offers being received.Mark expects prices to rise sharply this spring. An increase in demand usu-ally brings an increase in price and we havent seen that yet. As we come into spring I think well see multiple offers drive prices up.

Tahunanui man faces meth charg-es: Police executed an early morning search warrant at a Tahunanui address on Thursday, resulting in charges being made towards a 27 year old Nelson man. The man has been charged with pos-session of methamphetamine and pos-session of instruments for the commis-sion of an offence against the Misuse of Drugs Act.

    G o v e r n -ment is i n v e s t -ing in to m a i nt a i n the qual-ity of the New Zea-land Cycle Trail. N e l s o n MP Nick

Smith says hes pleased the local cycle trail has been selected, as it is an asset to our community and in need of repair following storm damage. I regularly use the Great Taste trail for recreation, fitness and family time, and rate it as one if the best cycle trails in country. My favourite section is from Richmond to Mapua through Rabbit Is-land and the unique ferry service across the Waimea Estuary, he says. Funding for our regional Cycle Trail is in addition to the $3m announced last week for the Nelson Coastal Route. Cycle Trails attract tourists, create jobs,

and boost economic growth in the re-gions. Reports on Cycle Trails indicate more than 1200 jobs have been created.

Family safe after Kawai St blaze: A working smoke alarm may have saved the lives of three people after they es-caped from a fire that started in the kitchen of their family home. Three fire engines attended the Kawai St South blaze at around 10.20am on Fri-day, along with police who cordoned off the street. Senior station officer Rob Allan says an offensive attack was carried out with

two high pressure hoses directed at the house. We had a smoke column issuing from the house. The main scene of the fire seemed to be in the kitchen area at the south western end of the house. Four men with breathing apparatus entered through the front door. He says around 10-15 per cent of the house was fire damaged but there was further smoke damage to the rest of the house.

Man dead after assault: A man in-volved in a serious assault at Franklyn Village on Saturday morning has died after being attacked by a 17 and 27 year old resident of the complex. Bruce Andrew Mortimer, 46, was trans-ferred from Nelson Hospital to Welling-ton Hospital on Saturday in a critical condition with a head injuries, after be-ing attacked. The two men have been charged with assault with intent to injure. Police said further charges are likely. The complex houses about 180 people and has around 60 security cameras in-stalled. Franklyn Village owner Liz Harris told the New Zealand Herald, accommoda-tion staff and residents were devastated by Mr Mortimers death. This is a dreadful thing to happen for our community. Forensic scientists are helping with a scene examination, along with around 20 police staff.

Mufti is soon to become a thing of the past at Nayland College, with the school board voting to phase in uniform for its senior year 11 and 12 students over the next three years. The decision was announced last Tuesday, and means that year 11s will be required to wear uniform in 2017 and then year 12s in 2018. A review of the year 13 mufti regula-tion will also come under review for 2018. The board made their decision based on a number of surveys and consultations, designed to gauge the view of the wider Nayland com-munity.Principal Daniel Wilson says the decision-making process had been in the public eye for a very long time. One hundred parents from Nayland Colleges main feeder school, Broadgreen Intermediate, were asked for their opinions along with parents, staff and students, at the subject selection evening last

year. He says uniform was one factor parents sitting on the fence took into account when selecting a school. There was some really telling in-formation in that survey, around parents who made up their mind not to send their student to Nay-land and why they had chosen that. The school also conducted a uni-form survey of 306 students last year. There was only a minority of stu-dents in that survey who wanted to have a uniform, however the com-ments in that survey were quite telling around the students who did want to move to uniform and the reasons around that, Daniel says.Philip Sanderson, a year 10 student at the school, says that senior muf-ti is one of the reasons why some people come to Nayland College.Naylands year 11 students have been allowed to wear mufti since the 1990s. Year 12 and 13 students have not worn uniform for a num-ber of years prior to that.

IMPORTANT NOTICE ABOUT THE LAW GOVERNING THE SAFETY OF TREES NEAR POWER LINES Electricity (Hazards from Trees) Regulations 2003

Trees close to power lines are a safety hazard. On 1st July 2005 the Tree Regulations came into effect to protect the security of the supply of electricity and for the safety of the public. There is the potential for injury or even death by electrocution if you touch a tree which is touching a power line. Children in particular like to climb trees and when these trees are close to power lines, there is always the risk of serious injury or even death. Trees can cause power cuts especially in strong winds, rain and snow. Your power supply may be disrupted when trees fall or branches break, damaging power lines, poles or other structures. In dry conditions serious fires can be caused.

The Tree Regulations spell out the responsibilities for electricity lines companies and tree owners in making sure that trees are kept safely trimmed away from the lines. They define two zones around power lines as shown in the diagram below.

Growth Limit Zone no part of a tree or other vegetation should be inside this zone. Lines companies are required to issue Cut or Trim Notices to owners when their trees are within the Growth Limit Zone.

Notice Zone if your trees reach this zone you may receive a Hazard Notice warning that the trees must not enter the Growth Limit Zone.

Nelson Electricity carries out routine surveys on its network and issues Cut or Trim Notices to owners of trees that have grown into the Growth Limit Zone. If you receive a Tree Cut or Trim Notice it is important that you read the information sent to you and respond accordingly.

Tree owners are required to respond to Notices by either: Arranging for trees to be trimmed at their cost by a professional

lines-qualified arborist to a clearance outside the Notice Zone; or Informing the lines company that they have no interest in the trees. The lines company may then fell the trees (in some instances

    they may choose to trim).

If trees on your property have not previously been trimmed by the Nelson Electricity you may be eligible for the first trim free of charge. In exceptional circumstances, a dispensation from the regulatory clearances may be applied for.

If tree owners do not comply with the Regulations and fail to have their trees cut or trimmed they can be fined up to $10,000 along with $500 per day for ongoing offences. Tree owners may also be liable for the cost of outages and repair of power lines if damage has been caused by their trees.

Cutting or trimming trees near power lines is an extremely hazardous activity. If branches or people come into contact with a live line while the tree is being cut a potentially fatal electric shock may result. If live lines are brought down by cutting trees, then serious safety hazards to other people and property in the vicinity may occur. Trimming or felling trees in close proximity to power lines must only be carried out by professional arborists who have had specific training and are qualified to work near power lines.

IMPORTANT NOTICE ABOUT THE LAW GOVERNING THE SAFETY OF TREES NEAR POWER LINES Electricity (Hazards from Trees) Regulations 2003

Nelson City and supplying approximately 9,200 consumers in what is mainly an urban area. Trees close to power lines are a safety hazard.

    Spectacular homes win architecture awards

    George Hilgeholt-designed home in Nelson.

    Rainbow opens with a bang

Three Nelson architectural designers have claimed titles at the 2015 Resene Architectur-al Design Awards, which were held on Friday evening.Four regional awards were presented to the three winning Nelson designers, who are Tony Karsten of Karsten Architectural Design, George Hilgeholt of AWE2010 Ltd and David Todd of David Todd Ltd Architectural Design. The annual event showcases the most innova-tive, creative and aesthetic architectural designs around the country, in both residential and commercial sectors. The awards identify stand-out designs in new homes, interiors, alterations and additions, and industrial design. Architectural Designers New Zealand CEO, Astrid Andersen, said that each year Nelson based designers showcase the stunning natural beauty of the regions, the incredible views, and the appealing lifestyle. The Nelson and Marlborough regional entries are always a feast for the eyes emulating the stunning natural landscape and the relaxed life-style, she says. Well done to all winners. The winners are now eligible for national titles, including the Supreme Architectural Design Award, and will be announced on 30 October.

Hundreds took to the snow over the weekend as Rainbow Ski Area held its opening weekend celebrations. Saturday was jam packed with snowball fights, tours, tobogganing, sledding and live music en-tertaining a crowd of hundreds, and while Sun-day was quieter, there were still plenty of people on the slopes for some wintery fun. Rainbow Ski Area manager Jono Hay says the weekend ran without a hitch. Weve had an excellent opening weekend with fresh snowfall on Friday morning. It set us up really well along with our man-made snow, he says. The ski field operates a full snow school with group and private lessons, as well as a school holiday programme. Jono says its very important that all vehicles coming up carry chains because they have had to turn people away who have been unprepared. Rainbow offer a shuttle service for those unable to make it up in their own vehicle.

The final piece of the puzzle in the Saxton Field development is being put into place with construction starting on a new sports ground that will include the regions first dedicated rugby league field. Contractors have already started removing top soil from the five hectare site, located between Avery Field and Saxton Oval, so that the drainage system can be installed. The former Daelyn Orchard site is the final piece of land within the greater Saxton Field complex to be developed and, when completed, will feature open playing fields including a home ground for the Richmond Rabbits Rugby League Club.Weve spoken to the Richmond Rabbits about it and they are very excited, Tasman District Council reserves officer Glen Thorn says. We have developed other council grounds for other clubs like Jubilee Park for the rugby and cricket, so its nothing new.Glen says the TDC-owned land is being developed as a part of a joint project with the Nelson City Council. Because the site is adjacent to the Saxton Velodrome, which is presently being constructed, and Avery Field, a shared toilet block will also be part of the development.

There will be an ablution facility that will service Saxton Velodrome, Avery Field and the new sports ground, although the velodrome will eventually get its own facility. There could also be shared clubrooms for the three sports - that makes more sense than having three separate clubrooms that arent fully utilised.Glen says the construction of a new ablution block will be a relief for football teams and their supporters at Avery Field. Theyve been using Porta-Loos there and some of them got burned down, so this will be good news for them.Glenn says the sports grounds will be sown with grass in late August and open for use in time for next winters sports. The league ground will have relocatable floodlights for night-time training in winter that can be removed in summer. The ponded area to the north of the ground and vacant area to the west will be landscaped to create a family recreation area and attractive entranceway. The entrance to the new ground will run between the new entrance to Saxton Field off Main Rd Stoke and Champion Rd. Its going to transform the whole area from a wasteland of weeds that people were using for fly-dumping into a really nice sports ground. Its going to look amazing.

When Pip Greenland took on a complex murder inquiry last year she wasnt yet a qualified detective, but she handled it like a pro and in the process sent the accused to jail and received a district commanders commendation for her work.Detective Pip Greenland was awarded the commendation at a Nelson Police Pay Parade at the station on Friday. She was one of seven officers to receive an award, along with three non-sworn staff. She says she was handed the murder inquiry early in the investigation and led it right through until after the trail that saw the accused found guilty of manslaughter of her husband and attempted murder of her daughter-in-law, and sent to jail.It was complex because they were arguing whether she was insane, says Pip. I had a feeling all along that there was something not right. Everyone said oh no, shes crazy, lets go with it but I thought there was something in it and I didnt believe she was insane, and that she was just a really good actress. The case started with around 60 witnesses that needed to be interviewed, along with managing suspects and victims. The trial was a great result really and this award is great recognition, and nice because I did most of the work on it myself.Other awards included a 35 year service

clasp to Detective Sergeant Mark Kaveney and Detective Sergeant Christ Roberts; a 28 year service clasp to Detective Sergeant Ian Langridge; a 21 year service badge to Tracey Ball; a 14 year service badge to Patricia Lenting and Marion Price; a 14 year long service and good conduct medal to Senior Constable Jude Yeoman; a certificate of service to ex-Senior Constable William Squires and a diploma in police workplace practice to Constable Micaela Rolton.

The Nelson Ark is taking its dogs on the road as part of the Healing Species programme that is aimed at encouraging empathy and compassion in school children. The Ark already runs its successful APART programme that links unwanted dogs with at-risk youths at its headquarters at Stonehurst Farm in Hope. But the group is taking a second programme called Healing Species into schools to benefit a wider cross-section of students. Ark trustee and co-founder Karen Howieson says the groups other co-founder, Susan Murray-Rifici, studied the programme when she was on a teaching fellowship in the US in 2008. Susan introduced the programme to a small number of Nelson schools, including Broadgreen Intermediate where she used to be a teacher, but now the Ark wants more schools to sign-up for Healing Species. APART is limited to a small number of children and we wanted to help a wider range of young people, Karen says. It helps create a positive culture in the classroom and encourages empathy among the students.Karen says they have just trained Rebecca Verity and Daniel Mortimer to deliver Healing Species at schools. It was piloted in Broadgreen and Nelson College for Girls this term and will be trialled at Parklands School next term. The Ark is also negotiating with Waimea College and Brooklyn School about delivering the programme in their schools.Karen says one of the keys to the success of Healing Species is the presence of a rescued dog as an assistant teacher in the lessons. All the dogs that go into the classroom have completed the APART programme and their story helps encourage trust and empathy in the students.Broadgreen year 7 and 8 teacher Craig Maybee says all of his students have been enjoying the programme which is very engaging. The dogs really make it work well. Its been great and the kids have enjoyed it - it also brings a really calming effect into the classroom.Student Ben Stewart says one of the things he learned from the programme was that people can overcome all sorts of obstacles with a little help. Its been really cool. Its nice to see a dog like Spike, that hasnt had a good start in life, turn out so good. The programme consists of nine to 11 weekly classroom lessons.

Jetstar to Nelson:Nelson is by far the busiest air-port on the list and serves around

800,000 passengers per year. The next bus-iest is only around 500,000. If they don't choose Nelson then there is something wrong. Adrian Ferris.

Of course they will choose Nelson. Best place in New Zealand to visit.

    Cj Power.

Looking forward to it. Sheree Piesse.

Kindergarten hours extended:It has been wonderful for our fam-ily. Our three girls have attended

Nelson South Kindergarten and with the change in hours we have been able to work a little more knowing our children are in a safe, happy, learning environment. It is also a choice, with our youngest still do-

ing three half days a week instead of full days. Robb Balloch Sandra Saywell.

I think its a good idea my daughter goes to Nelson

    South kindy. Nikita Tepu-Takuira.

I think it's stupid as you have some parents who

start work a lot earlier. You will soon have to make all workers around New Zealand work school hours as well. Kelly Brennan.

Referee quits after online abuse:Yup, I saw this. Absolute disgrace.

    Dylan Kawana-Waugh.

Disgusting! The club should be fined.

    Jade Gibbins.

Sad, as it is hard enough to get people to ref games

in any code, come on peeps sort it out! Hillary Tupe.

    Stoke Community Centre plans un-veiled:

Shame Tahunanui Community Centre couldn't get a slice of that

pie. Have we been forgotten? Cushla Vass.

I just hope one sporting code doesn't claim it and it is in fact a

community centre. I think it will be a won-derful benchmark for Stoke to build on. Let's hope a youth park is designed and goes ahead shortly after. Who will be man-aging the centre? Anyone know? Jo Munro.

Good idea, but will it leak like most kiwi buildings? Will it be cold with

very little heating, (like most kiwi build-ings), will there be so few power points you can't do anything without extension leads etc, will the floors be level? (You know the rest). Brian Gower.

Won't leak, look at the size of the soffits, plus the roof has reasonable

pitch. Codes state insulation and double glazing and all that good stuff is compul-sory now don't they, surely it won't be cold, just need to shut the bloody doors and windows, then crank up that big heat pump. What else do you want? Paul Jones.

Cellphone blackspots ignored:In this day and age, technology is imperative. Internet banking,

business opportunities and soon-to-be-extending parking meter times by mobile phone apps. After revising the recent pub-lication of NCCs future long term plan 2015-25,

I feel incredibly frustrated that instalment and upgrading of telecommunications in Maitai Valley is not part of the plan. Are we living in prehistoric times? No!! We are living in a forgotten community.Residents and businesses are at a disadvan-tage with no broadband internet, faulter-ing landlines and no mobile services to the area. Recent upgrades of the water pipe-lines have come at the expense of Maitai residents with no cost benefit.NCC states that they are a business-friendly council committed to being an enabler for business opportunities- NCC. A petition universally signed and support-ed by all persons contacted in the Maitai Valley has been submitted to the NCC declaring the frustration of the locals and informing the NCC about the Blackspot Grant Scheme. We are 3 kilometres from the CBD yet we are light-years away from communications. We implore that NCC acknowledges our commitment to Nelson.Hamish Kennedy, Maitai Valley - Nelson.

New mural: Do we need reminding that pub-lic spaces are shared by children,

too? That new mural of a couple in a mouth-clamped embrace doesn't belong in a public space. A nightclub perhaps. How much more virtual graffiti is going to be plastered over the city buildings? Add to the tacky blue stripes and silly, cold, white seats in Bridge St, and we see areas of the city beginning to look degraded. Don't Nelsonians have any say about these afflictions? They're not classy at all...Morag Woode.

Birchwood Schools popular fertilizer fundraiser has been a major source of funds for the school since it was first established in 1995. Since then, its not only helped the school with updates and additions, but has provided the community with quality fertilizer at a very reasonable price. For those who dont know how the fundraiser works, its as simple as filling in the form to the left and posting or delivering it to the school. Once the orders have been tallied, the correct amount of fertilizer is arranged and then bagged and delivered by parents and other volunteers. Alternative ordering options include filling out the flyer that will be delivered by parents into letter boxes, or by calling organizer Tracy Fallow on 547 4881.All orders need to be back to the school by July 24, so there is still plenty of time to think about what your garden needs. Organisers then hold a bagging night on August 6, and delivery day is on Sunday, August 9. Not only is delivery free, but those making the drop-offs will happily put the fertilizer wherever you need it, a handy

service for those who cant manage the bags themselves. The school gets a great response from this fundraiser with an average taking of $3000, and it certainly has everyone covered with fertilizer for citrus, rhododendron and camellias, lawn, lime, flourish compost, and Crop Start

nitrophoska. All bags are sold in 10 kilogram weights except for the Crop Start which comes in five kilogram bags and the flourish compost which comes in 20 kilograms. This year, the money raised will be going towards the completion of their senior playground. They are upgrading the area to a fitness trail that will feature two

obstacle type courses running parallel to each other so that the students will be able to race. The construction of the playground will be done in stages with the first stage expected to cost around $15,000. Treat your garden and support Birchwood School by placing your order for the annual fertilizer drive.

Forget playstation and computers - last week Birchwood School students showcased the best in handmade entertainment at their Games Gala. The event was the grand finale to the schools current focus on technology. During the topic, classes looked at how technology impacted on their lives, and took part in some practical technology problem solving activities. To bring the topic to a close, every class designed and constructed their own games, applying some of the techniques they had learned throughout the unit. The games needed to meet certain criteria, which each class decided on, including being

strong and sturdy, desirable and fun, practical to play, and realistic in their construction. The result was a Games Gala for both students and parents, featuring activities like The Claw Game, Fantastic, Fun, Fast Flicking Soccer and Whack a Fruit. I think the highlight for me has been the engagement of the students the fact that they have been so engaged in the activity and that the learning has almost been second-place, says Principal Chris Herrick. Students and parents bought tickets to play some of the many games that took over the junior and senior classrooms, with the money made going towards a worthy cause decided by each class.

School of Music, Tuesday, June 23: The Nelson School of Music restoration and rebuild has launched its fundraising campaign. Fundraising committee chair, Colleen Marshall says the project has a great team behind it who are currently busy setting up opportunities for naming rights, local business sponsorship and personal donations. Brochures detailing how people can donate have also been successful around town. Colleen says the public have already shown a lot of support for the School of Music and the fundraising committee will soon be working on public events.

Nayland College, Tuesday, June 23: Nayland Colleges arts coordinator Rose Shepard says the schools Performing Arts Festival was fabulous. Not only was it a great experience for both parents and students, the show sold out all its tickets. Rose says the school will definitely be doing the festival again.

St Paul's School Vinnies have cre-ated a special gift for vision im-paired people in Nelson, making a tactile children's story book fea-turing words in Braille and large print. The Vinnies, which is the youth group of the Society of St Vincent de Paul, were inspired to create the book after a visit from Gill Clayton and Kaye Halkett, who spoke about their experiences with sight loss. Gill and Kaye showed the Vinnies examples of tactile books and the children decided to make their own to do-nate to the Blind Foundation. The Vinnies transformed the children's story Whirly the Heli-copter, written by Ian Pillinger, into a tactile book featuring 3D illustrations with words in both Braille and large print. The Vin-nies presented the book to Gill,

Kaye and Amanda Stevens, who is also vision-impaired, and Paul Richardson, from the Nelson branch of the Blind Foundation, to be used by vision impaired people living in the region."I'm a blind parent with sighted-children and there was nothing like this around when my chil-dren were young," Gill says. "It is so important for any parent to be able to read to their children." Amanda says tactile books are also good for vision-impaired children and are a key resource for helping develop their literacy while Paul says the Vinnies cre-ated "one of the best tactile books I have seen in my years of work-ing in this field".Youth Coordinator for the Soci-ety of St Vincent de Paul, Philip-pa Winch says the Vinnies group took a term to make the book

which was part of a two year study on disability awareness. The Vin-nies also buddied up with young people with disabilities and their caregivers to go canoeing and created musical instruments for Little Stars playgroup that caters

for children with disabilities as part of the study. "The children learned so much from this pro-ject," Phillipa says. "It's helped the students to reach out to and value all people for the unique qualities they are able to offer."

Vinnie Josephine Hills says the book is "much more than some-thing people can read". "If you are blind and a Braille reader it is much better if you can touch the pictures as well. It's something they can really enjoy."

Nelson newcomers invited to meet and greetNew-comers to Nelson are encouraged to head along to Rhythm and Brown this Wednesday to meet new people and so-cialise.The Nelson Newcomers Network hosts various events in the city, including the monthly get-together at the New St bar.

Coordinator Howard Fairbank says he was pleasantly surprised when he turned up to his first meeting. There were a di-verse range of people, both in age and backgrounds. People were there from their 20s to their 50s and from North America, Europe, Asia and from other parts of New

Zealand. But the nights arent just for those from outside of the region, locals are also en-couraged to come along for diverse en-tertainment. This event is specifically designed for people who are keen on net-working and socialising, although the first

question youre often asked is how long have you been in Nelson for?The drinks and nibbles are at Rhythm and Brown on Wednesday, July 8 from 7pm. For more information, contact Howard on 021 209 0486 or email [email protected]

Garin College Mahi Toi Showcase Concert over the last Wednesday and Thursday nights was a sell out at the Hope Community Church. Principal John Boyce said that in all of his 15 years at the school, it was the best he had seen. Under the guidance of Garin College Arts Coordinator, Lindsey Furlong-Taylor, Year 13 Arts Captains Jess Brooks and Nick Erasmuson, had been planning this event for months and taken it to the next level. The audience was amazed and spell bound by the varied and entertaining acts performed by Garin College Students. Year 12 students now have the difficult task of trying to match such a polished performance for Mahi Toi 2016, says Lindsey.

Money is a dirty word, and sharing is the motto at Nelsons Koha shed, which opened its doors last Tuesday. The shed, which is being run out of a volunteers fathers garage in Stoke, is a place where people can come and receive donated goods at no cost. The only payment required is a smile. Organiser Cara Christall says that it all started when a post was shared on the Pay it Forward Nelson Facebook page to see if anyone would be interested in starting a local shed. Cara, along with three other dedicated volunteers, put their hands up and decided to give it a go. The following weeks were spent

shed hunting and putting the word out for donations. The response has been huge, says Cara. Were seeing all sorts of people donating stuff. I think people find a real richness in giving. Cara says the shed is all about providing free goods for anyone and everyone. This is a place where anyone can come and get what they need there is no taking involved. Here, its all about sharing. When you think about it, its such simple concept, she says. The organising committee has started a Facebook page to get the word out,

which has already hit more than 1000 likes. Were blown away by the support. We were doing a happy dance at 48 likes - we had no idea it was going to be this big. For the Koha shed to continue to grow, a new location is crucial. Our immediate concern is finding a more suitable space, says Cara. We need somewhere bigger, drier, and with more parking spaces. Somewhere in Victory would be ideal. The shed is located at 556 Waimea Road, Stoke and is open Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays 11am 1pm.

Members meet twice a month for breakfast which features an engaging format and a guest speaker from

outside the club an expert in their field who provides tips and insights relating to a particular area of business. Members themselves also give presentations and there are plenty of opportuni-ties for informal networking. Business breakfast Club is a great way to learn, grow, build relation-ships and keep motivation levels up, while giving back to the community at the same time.

Dont miss out on hearing Haydens story, his ad-vice for success and being among the best, and the chance to put those words into action for the growth and development of your own business venture.

The Big Brekkie with Hayden PaddonThe Business Breakfast Club is once again proud to pre-sent The Big Brekkie featuring rising Kiwi motorsport champ, Hayden Paddon. In order to maximize Haydens flying visit to the Bowater Hyundai showroom, a full on day of media, racing and photo opportunities has been organised. Join Hayden, the next big thing in New Zealand motor racing, for breakfast at the Business Breakfast Clubs Big Brekkie. Currently, Hayden is racing all over the world and consistently placing in the top 10 rankings in the

WRC (World Rally Championship). Nelson is lucky to have Hayden for a whole day and those attending The Big Brekkie will no doubt be inspired by his story. Come and listen to Haydens experiences competing at the pinnacle of his chosen sport globally, and the hard work and com-mitment he has shown to get to the top. As New Zealands most successful rally driver, Hayden recently demonstrated his talents once again, securing a history-making, career-best second place at the Rally Italy Sardegna. Hayden described his first-ever WRC po-dium finish the best result by a New Zealander in an

overseas rally as a dream result. With Hyundai being Haydens major sponsor, locals have Chris Bowater, CEO Bowater Hyundai to thank for the Nelson visit and as the motor group is also proud to sup-port the Victory Boxing charity, a portion of money made through tickets to The Big Brekkie will go towards the lo-cal organization. The breakfast event is also a fundraiser for Victory Boxing, so bring your wallets as there will be some great opportunities to support a valuable cause.

A day of excitement with WRC rising starHaydens visit will also include an exciting race challenge for six lucky Bowater Hyundai cus-tomers. Between 11am and 1pm, six Bowater Hyundai customers will get the once in a life-time chance to go head to head with Hayden on the Pro Karts track in Tahunanui. Come along and watch how the professionals do it, take some
