You may have seen our new signage – which we are so very pleased with, especial-ly the neon signage in the hall which looks really striking –this was designed by Mark Elliot of Darling Signs, based in Weybridge, the service from Mark was great as were his ideas and enthusiasm – its always lovely to work closely with another local business.

We are also working closely with Glitterati in Weybridge to launch a very special ‘10 Years Younger’ campaign – this is so very exciting and details will be released on the 30th August….

We are also hosting our very first ‘Ladies Day’ at Portmore – see our ‘News’ section, very exciting and we hope it will be a great success.

On a different note, we hope to have a refurb on our patient bathroom in the next few months to create a more sumptuous and elegant environment for our lovely clients, if you have any ideas or feedback for improvements, please email me at [email protected] I would love to hear your thoughts.

HYGIENESpaHOW TO CARE FOR YOUR DENTAL IMPLANTS

Implants are becoming more common as a way of replacing missing teeth. They are more stable than dentures and most prefer the idea of not having teeth that come out or that could fall out!

However many are unaware of the maintenance and care that implants require. Implants themselves are not susceptible to decay like our teeth but they are affected by gum disease.

Implants, like our teeth, are held into place by bone and ligaments within the gum. It is during the healing phase that theses ligaments form and tighten, but never to the strength that we would find between healthy gum and natural tooth. For this reason implants, in some ways, require even more oral hygiene and maintenance than natural teeth to prevent gum disease and loss of the implant.

Here at Portmore we want to help you maintain your implants. Here are some helpful recommendations to follow that will aid in this:

• Have a hygiene appointment at our hygiene spa every 3 months.

• Brush your implants like you would teeth, with a toothbrush, 2 times daily.

• Use interdental brushes, of the correct size, daily.

• Use Superfloss around each implant daily, reaching below the gum line.

• Visit your dentist regularly for a check up.

Implants are not just for Christmas, they are a life long investment that require your TLC; it would be like having a car and not having an MOT. Visit the hygiene Spa for any advice or instruction on how to maintain yours.

TOOTH WHITENINGIt’s fair to say that tooth whitening has been around in various forms for a good few years and is no longer just for the rich and famous.

This is mainly because extensive research coupled with growing demand has meant that whitening products have dramatically lowered in cost and have increased significantly in the quality of their results.

Teeth can start to darken down over a period of time, this is usually caused by dyes that are commonly found in most food stuffs. Staining usually occurs over time as the foods and drinks we consume regularly deposit tiny molecules onto enamel where they settle and become very difficult to remove. Smoking, drinking tea/coffee/red wine and just good old-fashioned ageing can also cause teeth to darken.

There is a lot we can do ourselves to prevent teeth darkening, stop smoking for a start, regular visits to the hygienist for a professional clean, sugar free chewing gum to improve the saliva flow in your mouth, and whitening tooth-pastes & mouthwashes can all help to prevent staining or teeth darkening.

However, it may not be easy to keep teeth from ultimately becoming discoloured and tooth whiten-ing offers a simple solution to treat discolouration

quickly and effectively. quickly and effectively.

Tooth Whitening at Portmore is a simple, cost effective treatment that can provide fantastic, natural looking, whiter teeth in very little time. It can be a great boost to someone’s confidence to suddenly have a beautiful, white, glossy smile. The

treatments are designed to be non-inva-sive and will lighten the colour of your teeth

depending on the specific result desired by the patient.

All whitening patients will see a dentist prior to commencing treatment, just to ensure teeth and gum health is in tip- top condition and there are no underlying issues.

Often, our dentist may recommend a visit to the Hygienist for our luxury ‘Diamond Gloss’ polish. Airflow is a bit like microdermabrasion for teeth, in that it gets rid of those difficult to remove stains, preparing your teeth for whitening to ensure optimum results. We particularly recommend this treatment for smokers or those patients with very heavy staining.

We offer two excellent whitening solutions at Portmore, one that takes place in practice, and one that lifts stains gradually over the course of a few weeks in the comfort of your own home.

We offer two excellent whitening solutions at Portmore, one that takes place in practice, and one that lifts stains gradually over the course of a few weeks in the comfort of your own home.

Home whitening is a very popular choice for patients as it is extremely cost effective and can be carried out in the convenience of your own home, perfect for those with busy lifestyles. We will provide you with custom made whiten-ing trays (similar to a soft, sports mouth guard). The trays are comfortable to wear and depending on the on gel we provide, the trays are designed to be worn either overnight or for between 2-4 hours during the day at any time that suits you.

You only need 2-3 short visits with the dentist; firstly there is a short 10 min appointment where we take some impressions of your mouth to get the bespoke trays made. Around 10 days later you come back into practice and the team will fit your trays and show you how to use the whitening gel correctly.

Commonly, patients will see great results after wearing the trays for a few days however most individuals will be happy after 2 weeks of home whitening.

We also provide ‘top- up’ whitening gels, which are available upon request and can be purchased from the practice: this means that the treatment is very cost

effective and you can continue to whiten your teeth at home way into the future.

Zoom! whitening has been one of the most popular in-practice whitening procedures for many years but is still very much at the forefront of tooth whitening technology. Perfect for patients who are time poor or who would like instant results for that special occasion or last minute holiday.

The Zoom! system involves the patient coming into the practice for around an hour and a half and means that we whiten your teeth whilst you wait. Zoom! provides instant results in most cases. You walk in with a tired, grey smileand leave Portmore with a sparkly, whiter smile. If you want instant results with minimal hassle then this treatment is the one for you.

Whatever your lifestyle, either option is safe, effective and provides absolutely great results.

Are you thinking about whitening? Why not give us a call? We offer FREE complimentary whitening consultations for all Portmore patients. 01932 855011.

DENTALEXAMINATIONS

How often do I need to come to the dentist for an examination?

This is a frequently asked question at Portmore and the simple answer is that we tailor dental care to suit individual needs. The need for examinations can vary a great deal depending on a patient’s dental history and/or their current concerns and can range from anything between 3 months to 2 years.

The frequency of examinations are influenced by many factors including:

- Your medical history and/or current conditions

- You age- Your dental history, i.e. have

you had a lot of dental treatments? Orthodontics? Cosmetic Dentistry? Implants? If so, we would like to see you more frequently to monitor and manage longevity. Every kind of dental treatment requires maintenance of some sorts.

- Have you recently finished acomplex course of treatment?

- Are you a new patient to thepractice

- Your gum health

What exactly do you look for?

Did you know that it’s not simply a ‘check-up’ that we provide at Portmore? Your consultation appointment is so much morethan that – check out our list (page 10) of what we do and what we look for during your consultation time.

Why do you need to take x-rays?

Dental X-rays (radiographs) are images of your teeth that your dentist uses to evaluate your oral health. These X-rays use low levels of radiation to capture images of the interior of your teeth and gums. This can help your dentist to diagnose problems, like cavities, tooth decay, and impacted teeth where examination alone is incon-clusive. For patients undergoing any kind of implant dentistry, it is extremely important to take either a ‘full-mouth’ x-ray or a dental CT scan which shows bone density, height & width. Our specialised, state of the art CT scanner is low dose and extremely safe & effective.

Why do you need to update my medical history at each visit?

During your first dental visit, your dentist will ask for a thorough medical history, which typically is included on a patient registration. This section may include questions about:

- Lifestyle - hobbies such as high-risk sports. - Your profession.- Smoking habits.- Alcohol consumption.- Vaccinations.- Pregnancy.- Allergies.- Current medication.- Current ailments, disease, conditions.- History of operations or hospital visits.- Family medical history.

This information, combined with the results of your initial clinical examination, gives us an overview of your current health status and will help to assess your immediate dental-care needs and recommend the best treatment approach.

After your first visit, be sure to keep your dentist informed every time there is a change in your current health status. Let your dentist also know if you are pregnant, have developed allergies or are a smoker. Depending on your health status at the time of your visit, different treatment alternatives, or even delaying treatment, may be recommended.

Can you help me to stop smoking?

Smoking is extremely detrimental to your oral health and is the main risk factor in developing oral cancer. It goes without saying that we are very keen

for all our patients to stop smoking and we will support you in any way that we

can to do so. Our Dental Therapists are trained in

smoking cessation and can put you in touch with organisations and self-help groups who will have the latest information to help you quit as well as offering

in-house advice and support.

If you would like to stop smoking, but need some help,

please don’t hesitate to give us a call. Why do you refer me to the hygienist? Why can't you clean my teeth? We are passionate about oral hygiene and prevention at Portmore. We have a team of highly qualified Dental Hygienists and Therapists who are specialised in cleaning your teeth and promoting oral hygiene and who can spend much more time with you as this is their area of expertise.

Our Regular Refresh treatment is a health focused service that is designed for patients who value their oral health by regularly attending the hygiene spa. As clinicians, we highly recommend this treatment as a 6 monthly maintenance programme to ensure that you aim for optimal oral health for life.
