A meet scheduled in Hoxie on Friday was canceled due to weather. It will not be rescheduled. The Lady Red Devils scored 158.66 points followed by Hitch- cock County, Neb., 135.33; Rawlins County, 120; Dundy County, Neb., 69; Colby, 33; and Bethune, Colo., 30. The girls had seven firsts, five on the track and two in the field. Oakley is resurfac- ing its weather-damaged track this spring. By JIM MERRIOTT [email protected] Oberlin junior Rory Wendelin has a goal this season, a quest she has been working on since she was a freshman. Wendelin, a two-sport letter win- ner in cross country and track, wants to break the Decatur Community High School girls’ shot put record of 37 feet, 3 inches, set by Jody Elwood (now Black) in 1979. “I am surprised the record has lasted this long,” said Mrs. Black. “Records are set to be broken, that is why they are in the books.” Wendelin started on the shot put in junior high school physical edu- cation class. She started training her freshman year under the supervision of her father, Norm Wendelin, and family friend Bill Manning, a shot put coach from Norton. Her freshman year’s work ended, however, after she broke her throw- ing wrist. Last season Wendelin worked on a rehabilitation program in the Oberlin High School weight room RUNNING CROSS COUNTRY this fall, Oberlin junior Rory Wendelin hopes to break the Decatur Community High shot put record held by Jody Elwood since 1979. Athlete hopes to break record to strengthen the ailing wrist. “My dad got me interested in throwing the shot put when I was younger,” she said. “I enjoy it, but realize in order to reach my goal, I must practice properly and work in the weight room. Not only is it nec- essary to be stronger, but it is just as important to work on the proper techniques to improve.” This season Wendelin is attempt- ing to put it all together. In her first meet two weeks ago against Quinter and Atwood, she put the shot 34-7 1/4. Last week she hit 30-9 at the Rawlins County meet in Atwood. In addition to the shot put, Wendelin runs cross country in the fall, sings with the DCHS Singers and is the lead drummer in the high school pep band. She has a diversified taste in mu- sic ranging from pop to rock, coun- try and rap. Her favorite movie is “Casino Royale” (a James Bond thriller). She also likes Orlando Bloom and Eva Green as movie stars. Her favorite flower is the morning glory and her favorite color is red. She enjoys lis- tening to the Dixie Chicks and Cold Play. She loves horses but does not own one. Her favorite food is corn on the cob. Wendelin enjoys watching mov- ies, shopping, hanging out with friends, being with family and fish- ing in the summer. She plans on majoring in medical technology with a possible minor in drama and the arts. “My favorite pet is Jack our fam- ily dog,” she said. “I enjoy reading in my spare time.” She recently completed Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen. “It took me two different times to try and finish the book because it is so long,” she said. “At first, the length of the book kept me from fin- ishing it, so I put it down for a while before I finished it.” Rory is the daughter of Norman and Joanne Wendelin. She has an older brother, Ladd, who graduated from Oberlin in 1999 and a sister, Greta, who graduated in 2002 and will be attending the University of Kansas graduate school this fall.
