Live Christmas All Year Long Christmas is about a way of life. Knowing the depths of God’s love for us in this Christmas time, we stretch

ourselves to live as Christ’s people every day.

“I wish I could put some Christmas spirit in jars and open a jar of it every month.” Pope John XXIII. Why

does the warm feeling we have around the Christmas season suddenly disappear? Many people say that

Christmas is their favorite time of year. But why? What does this season have that the others are lack-

ing? After the liturgical Christmas season is completed, the holiday lights come down, we walk past dried-

out Christmas trees and over filled garbage totes. When the props have all but disappeared from view, so

often does the Christmas spirit that had recently filled our hearts. At Christmastime, people are often a bit

kinder, merely based on the fact that it's Christmas. Why do we limit ourselves to only keeping this cheery

feeling one month out of the year? Why do we put time restrictions on ourselves? It's the time of year

when we all act a little nicer, we smile a little easier, we cheer a little more. We are the people that we

always hoped we would be. There are people that are having trouble making their miracle happen. There

are people that don't have enough to eat. There are people that are cold. You can go out and say hello to

these people. But what if we didn't limited it? What if we kept that spirit all year long? Unfortunately,

most of us tuck away our Christmas spirit until the next year. This feeling needs to stay alive long after the

snow has melted. “Christmas isn’t just a day, it’s frame of mind” – Miracle on 34th Street. It needs to stay

alive during the dog days of summer. It needs to stay alive when family and friends gather for camping,

picnics, BBQ cookouts, walking the trails, resting on a beach. It needs to stay alive as we admire the colors

of the leaves changing in the fall. The Christmas spirit needs to live bright not only when it is 20 degrees

outside but also when it is 80 degrees. These “actions”, “feelings” and “state of mind” MUST live all year

long. Christmas is a time of great joy. Think about it: GOD, himself, came to this Earth as a baby to live a

life that was just for us. So shouldn’t we celebrate this every single day of our lives?

Christmas is not a day or a season, but a condition of heart and mind. Each day dawns an opportunity,

which sets in motion achievements, no matter how small. If we live this way, then every day is Christ’s day

and Christmas is always near. If we love our neighbors as ourselves, then our riches can be seen by being

    poor in spirit.

Christmas can be a season of great joy. It is a time of God bestowing His great love onto us. It can be a

time of healing and renewed strength. Christmas is the time we celebrate the fact that God sent His Son,

Jesus, into the world to be born. His birth brought great joy to the world. Shepherds, wise men, and angels

all shared in the excitement. They knew this was no ordinary baby. Jesus was born so one day the price

could be paid for the things we have done that are wrong. We can truly be happy at Christmas! No matter

what may be happening, we can know that we are His children. We then become sons and daughters of

God. Heaven will be our home one day. Look at Christmas in a new way this year. This is the year to invite

Jesus into your heart. You will then have a "Merry Christmas." If you constantly invite Jesus to be born in

your heart, the joy and peace you will receive will last all year. One of the most remarkable stories of

Christmas comes from one of the darkest moments of modern history. World War I ravaged a continent,

leaving destruction in its wake. The human cost still staggers us. But from the midst of this dark conflict

comes the story of the Christmas Truce of 1914. The Western Front, only a few months into the war, was a

deplorable scene of devastation. Perhaps as if to give the soldiers one day to breathe again, a truce was

called from Christmas Eve through Christmas Day. As darkness settled over the front line, the sound of

exploding shells and gunfire faded. Suddenly, faint carols, in French and English voices on one side and in

German on the other, rose to fill the silence of the night. By morning, hesitant soldiers, began filing out of

the trenches and into the dreaded and parched soil of No Man’s Land. There was more singing and gifts of

rations and cigarettes were exchanged. Family photos were passed around. Soccer balls appeared. Up and

down the Western Front, soldiers, who only hours before had been locked in deathly combat, now faced

    off in soccer games.

  • The Holy Family of Jesus, Mary and Joseph December 27, 2020

For one brief but entirely remarkable day, there was peace on earth. Some have called the Christmas

Truce of 1914 “the Miracle on the Western Front.”

The Times of London reported on the events of the Christmas Truce. Soldiers recorded the day in letters

home and in diaries. Some of those lines made it to newspapers. Here’s one such line from the diary of a

    German infantryman:

“The English brought a soccer ball from the trenches, and pretty soon a lively game ensued. How marvel-

ously wonderful, yet how strange it was. The English officers felt the same way about it. Thus Christmas,

the celebration of Love, managed to bring mortal enemies together as friends for a time.”

So, Christmas is supposed to be the time of year when we celebrate the birth of Christ. Unfortunately, it

has become a commercial holiday rather than a religious one. It's mostly known as a time for businesses

to make money. The "reason for the season" is supposed to be the recognition and appreciation of the

birth of the one who loves us and died in our place. Give God the highest place in your life this Christmas.

Understand, first hand, what the real meaning of Christmas is. Just “thinking about it,” or going through the

motions of the holiday is not what we are called to do. Accept that this baby, born in a manger, came to

earth to pay your debt. Receive the peace and enter the new year a changed person.

“I will honor Christmas in my heart, and try to keep it all the year.” Charles Dickens

It is my sincere wish that you have a glorious Christmas season, both now and all year long.

    Many blessings,

    Sherrie Clutts
