to 14th, 2014, in the wonderful town of Arnprior, a mere 40 minutes

from the heart of Ottawa. Getting here could not be easier. The

Ottawa region is served by an international airport, a bus station and

train station. There are also major highways from all directions to

and from Canada and the USA.

NAOC2014 is the North American Orienteering Championships sanctioned by the International Orienteering Federation (IOF) as an official regional championships. Held every two years , the largest orienteering event in North America is alternately hosted between Canada and the United States of America. In 2014 they will feature 3 World Ranking Events (WRE), the Bjorn Kjellstrom Cup, training camps, the People’s Cup, clinics, festivities, food, fun, the town of Arnprior, 12 countries and counting,the attractions of Canada’s Capital ‐ Ottawa, and so much more.

As the official Regional Championships a lot is on the line ‐ top North American in each race in the elite class will automatically be entered in the World Championships. The stakes will be high and the drama will be worth watching.

HOST TOWN

ARNPRIOR

The gateway to the Upper Ottawa Valley, Arnprior is the HOST TOWN for NAOC2014. It is located at the mouth of the Madawaska River, as it enters the Ottawa River. The town is a namesake of Arnprior, Scotland, and is known for lumber, hydro power generation, aerospace and farming. A modern town where you will find all the conveniences of living in an urban area surrounded by the beauty of nature, which comes from being WHERE THE RIVERS MEET.

We are lucky to have such a great partner that has bought into the idea of a host town and is doing eve r y th i ng t o he l p make NAOC2014 a great experience for all participants. Take some time and explore all the town has to offer including a restored early 20th century theatre, unique shops and some great nature areas including Macnamara Trail.

NORTH AMERICAN CHAMPIONS All citizens of the following countries are eligible to be named North American Champion ‐ Canada, USA, Puerto Rico, Jamaica & Barbados. Participants from other countries are welcome and encouraged to participate and will still qualify for awards.

NAOC age classes ‐ with age classes from 12‐and‐under to 85‐plus this is your chance to compete against those in your age group for championship medals. Open classes ‐ if you want to choose your own level of challenge (technical and distance), these non championship classes are just for you.Recreational events ‐ each day there will also be a fun score‐O event for orienteers of all abilities.Clinics ‐ There will be two clinics offered on Saturday morning ‐ a Learn to Orienteer clinic for newcomers to the sport and a Orienteer Smarter Clinic for orienteers of 'intermediate' technical ability. Clinic participants will be able to test their new‐found knowledge in the recreational, open or age class events immediately after the clinics.

WRE: The Middle, Long & Sprint events are IOF World Ranking Events (WRE). All competitors wishing to qualify must provide their IOF WRE number at registration. If you have already registered please submit to Linda Connell ([email protected]) as soon as possible. Please check the IOF website to ensure you have your correct number. Only those registered in F21E and M21E for the Long and Middle, and in F21E, M21E, F20E‐ and M20E‐ for the Sprint, can receive World Ranking points.

TIMING: All events will use SPORTIDENT (SI) timing. Please provide your SI # when you register. If you do not have an SI device you can rent one when you register.

NICK SMITH CENTRE ‐ Downtown ArnpriorThe epicentre of NAOC2014. Outside of the races this recreation centre will be the hub of the action. It will be the PLACE TO BE, the place to TAKE CONTROL; a place to relax and socialize with each other. The EVENT CENTRE is 25 minutes to CARP RIDGE, 55 minutes to Ottawa and 5 minutes to ROBERT SIMPSON PARK.

The opening ceremonies, medal presentations, meals, entertainment and showers happen here. This is also our main event office for race and training kit pick ups, and general inquiries during NAOC2014. Camping and Hardfloor accommodation are located next to the NICK SMITH CENTRE as well as the main parking for all events. Shuttle buses will provide transportation to and from Carp Ridge and Robert Simpson Park, so you don’t have to worry about the driving .

SPRINT EVENT

The NAOC2014 National Team Relay will be a great spectator event with the National teams from Canada, US & Barbados

competing. In the spirit of friendly international competition, the relay will also be open to other countries who either form their

own or a mixed team to compete. All team members must have competed in the elite categories in the individual races at

NAOC2014 (21E or 20‐E) to be eligible to be on a relay team. Each team must be comprised of two men and two women, with the

women running the first and last legs. After the National Team Relay all other NAOC2014 participants will be able to run for

their club in the PEOPLE’S CUP FINALE. This will be on the same course as the National Teams in a mass start solo event by age

class. There will be a lot of forking so following is not an option. Challenge yourself ‐ can you beat the National team members

on the same course? Let them cheer you on through Robert Simpson Park & Gillies Grove.

RELAY



EMBARGO 1 : ARNPRIOR ‐ In the Town of Arnprior the area North of Madawaska Street and Elgin street West of its junction with Madawaska River (in red), is embargoed until after the sprint and relay events, with exception for John Street N from Madawaska Street to the Arnprior Hospital entrance.

EMBARGO 2 : ARNPRIOR Competitors are allowed (and encouraged) to visit the Arnprior Downtown business district south of Madawaska Street, and the Arnprior Museum and Library on the North side of Madawaska Street (at corner of John Street), but it is prohibited to do any orienteering training, use a map, testing routes, etc. in this area. On the morning of Mon Oct 13th the whole of Downtown Arnprior West of Daniel street and North of Elgin Street is out of bounds, except for travel to the event arena. Instructions for

how to get to the event arena will be given in the final bulletin and event details.

EMBARGO 3: CARP RIDGE ‐ Everything in the rectangle bounded by Carp Rd on the south‐west, Thomas A.‐Dolan Parkway to the south‐east, Stonecrest Rd. to the north‐east, and Kinburn Side Rd to the north‐west is embargoed. The only exceptions are the Bell Sensplex at the corner of Kinburn Side Rd and Carp Rd and the Stonecrest school yard at the corner of Kinburn Side Rd and Stonecrest Rd.

Carp Ridge ‐ Middle & Long

The Carp ridge is a 30 Km long rocky

outcrop just west of Ottawa. It’s a

beautiful piece of the Canadian Shield

popping out of the flat and fertile

Ottawa Va l ley fa rmland that

surrounds it. Most of the ridge has

been designated as a conservation

a r e a t o b e p r e s e r v e d f r om

development. While most of the ridge

is privately owned, the City of Ottawa

is slowly buying up sections in the

heart of the ridge as part of the

preservation process. Orienteering

Ottawa is fortunate to have event‐based access to most of the area.

The terrain is made up of forested, rocky ridges, with many large and small

marshes and a fair bit of rock detail. Beavers are active in the area with many

beaver ponds and dams. Some sections have an extensive trail network and other

areas are completely wild and undisturbed. The ridge is mapped with 2.5m

contours to reflect the intricate topographic details. The relief is often rather

vague and hills are less than 10 metres high. The area has a mix of runnability

from open hardwood forest to denser vegetation. The result is a very technically

challenging area that will be a great test of your navigational skills. We have

included a map sample of the new portion of the map for you on page 11, with the

older existing map.

The sprint and relay take place in the town of Arnprior, with a mix of urban areas, parkland, and forest. The forested part is

a tract of old growth forest, with towering white pines and sugar maples, many root stocks, and a dense trail network. The

area has only small elevation changes. Uncrossable fences, hedges and forbidden areas add challenging route choice

elements to the very fast running of the forest and parkland. Closed streets of downtown Arnprior for the sprint add to the

excitement and the challenge as competitors change gears multiple times throughout the race. The arena and the downtown

streets both offer superb spectator opportunities.

AWARDS

BJORN KJELLSTROM CUP

The Björn Kjellström Cup, named after a Swede who was instrumental in

introducing orienteering in North America, is a competition between the

national teams of the USA, Canada and now Barbados, at the senior level

(M21E, F21E). Contested every 2 years, it was first awarded in 1980. The cup

is currently held by the USA.

FUTURE CHAMPIONS CUP

Instituted in 2012 at the NAOCs in Pennsylvania, the Future Champions Cup is

the junior version of the BK CUP. It is contested by the national teams at the

Junior level (M20‐E & F20‐E). In 2012, the cup was somewhat aptly won by

both two competing countries ‐ Canada and the USA.

PEOPLE’S CUP

One of the initiatives of NAOC2014 is the creation of the PEOPLE’S CUP. This

is a club competition that takes into account the results of all competitors by

club. The club with the best results over the whole weekend will take home the

cup, with Monday’s PEOPLE’S CUP FINALE after the NATIONAL RELAY.

AWARDS & MEDALS

Each of the three championship events will feature a flower ceremony for the

top 3 runners, in the elite categories, at the arena at the close of each race.

There will also be a medal ceremony for all classes at the end of each day, as

part of the evening festivities at the Event Centre. This will include national

anthems but we promise they won’t take all night. Not only will the ceremonies

be worth it but the awards ‐ created by Lorna Guttormson are incentive enough.

Medals will be awarded to the top 3 North Americans in each age class. The

winner being crowned the North American Champion. Awards will be given to

the top 3 finishers in each age class regardless of nationality.

TRAINING

We are offering 12 different courses on 8 of Orienteering Ottawa’s best maps as training opportunities for

the North American Orienteering Championships. You can purchase any or all of these maps as part of

your registration for NAOC2014 or by e‐mailing our registrar at [email protected].

Maps will be available for pickup at the front desk at the Nick Smith Centre in Arnprior from 8:30 am to

9:15 pm Monday Oct. 6th through Thursday Oct. 9th or at Race Kit Pickup from the 9th to the 13th. If you

wish to pick up your maps earlier please contact Jeff Teutsch at [email protected] to arrange

alternate arrangements.

Ribbons or orienteering flags will be hung at the marked control locations between Monday Oct. 6th and

Thursday Oct. 9th. You are welcome to train on these courses at other times but we do not guarantee there will be any markers at the control locations.

Orienteering Ottawa will also be holding its regular Wednesday evening running training at 6:00 pm which

is open to everyone. If you are interested in joining this session please e‐mail coach Francis at

Join us at the EVENT CENTRE for healthy, hearty, plentiful, mouth‐watering and reasonably‐priced breakfasts and dinners starting with Friday evening dinner through to Monday morning breakfast. Menus have been planned by our food coordinator, Registered Dietitian Marketa Graham and Arnprior caterer Riley's Catering Co. Each meal offers a wide selection of great food for everyone with a variety of vegetarion choices as part of the regular buffet table.

FESTIVAL

Our aim is to make NAOC2014 a fun and festive experience. With our partners the Town of

Arnprior, we are planning several initiatives to make this aim come true.

OPENING CEREMONY: Wear your club or national colours including flags, banners, jackets

etc., and join the festivities. Let’s show the town what Orienteering is all about.

Starting at 6:30pm sharp on Friday the 10th we will officially open NAOC2014 with a parade

of clubs/nations in the arena of the Event Centre. The ceremonies will also feature a

cultural exhibition , torch lighting, music and and official address. Make sure you are in

Arnprior to cheer on your club/nation. These festivities will be followed by dinner at 7:30.

MARKETPLACE: While Orienteering Ottawa loves arena production, this year with our

partners in Arnprior, we are adding a marketplace full of local food, craft and other

vendors. Grab your lunch here or browse the souvenirs to take home and remember

Arnprior, then get back to the excitement of the races.

SPECTATING: On first sight of the Sprint Arena you will say “WOW! What a view!”. There

will even be bleachers. We will also have souvenir programs and an area for fans to collect

autographs. Our announcing team will feature local sportscasters with orienteers keeping

you informed and engaged throughout the day as you cheer on your fellow orienteers at

spectator controls and in the finish chute.

KIDZONE: Don’t let your wee ones give you concern while you are out on course. You can

focus on your race as Laura Teutsch has some great activities to keep the young ones

active and safe.

AFTER‐HOURS: When the races are done each day NAOC2014 will not go to sleep. While

some may want to be preparing for the next day’s event, we will have activities to keep

everyone else entertained. From the meals to music and other activities, evenings in

Arnprior will be worth staying at the Event Centre.

THEME‐SONG: NAOC2014 has commissioned local band the ORIENTEERS to create our

theme song ‐ TAKE CONTROL. This is a first for NAOC. Check out the song on
