AFTER CAREFUL CONSIDERATION AND OBSERVATION I CAME UP WITH SOME SUGGESTIONS
FOR A SEARCH DRILL IN THE SECOND BUILDING AT THE NAVY YARD. THE SETUP IS SIMILAR TO
A HOSPITAL LAYOUT BUT IT OFFERS A REAL CHALLENGE FOR BASIC SEARCH TRAINING. THE
ORIGINAL BUILDING WE WERE USING DID NOT GIVE THE LEFT HAND SEARCH TEAM MUCH TO DO
SINCE IT IS A STRAIGHT WALL WITHOUT ANY ROOMS. THIS RESULTED IN THE LEFT HAND TEAM
FAR AHEAD OF THE RIGHT TEAM. ALSO THE LAYOUT OF THE BUILDING DOES NOT OFFER A
SUITABLE EXAMPLE OF A LARGE UNCOMPARTMENTED AREA WHICH IS DESIRED FOR TEACHING
THE SEARCH ROPE DRILL.
SO FAR I’VE OBSERVED ENOUGH COMPANIES DURING THIS DRILL TO SEE THAT THE MAIN
CONCERN SHOULD BE PLACED ON BASIC SEARCH TECHNIQUES AND NOT SPECIALIZED SEARCH
ROPE TRAINING. IT IS FOR THIS REASON WE HAVE INCORPORATED THE SEARCH ROPE ONLY AS A
MEANS TO RESCUE A TRAPPED MEMBER AFTER A SIMULATED “MAYDAY” COLLAPSE.
THE ATTACHED PAGES ARE A LAYOUT OF THE SECOND BUILDING AVAILABLE AND SOME
SUGGESTED PLANS TO DEVELOP A STATE OF THE ART SEARCH DRILL. THE EMPHASIS WILL BE
PLACED ON BASIC SEARCH TECHNIQUES AND A CHANCE TO TRAIN THE MEMBERS IN A
“MAYDAY” MISSING MEMBER SCENARIO UTILIZING THE SEARCH ROPE.
I’VE TRIED TO KEEP THE PLANS AS LOW BUDGET AS POSSIBLE USING MATERIALS EASILY
AVAILABLE FROM BLDG 10’S SUPPLY OF LUMBER. THE PROJECT WILL TAKE APPROX. 2 WEEKS
TO COMPLETE AND SETUP. AT THAT TIME WE WILL DEMO THE COURSE USING LADDER 47.

OUTSIDE ENTRANCE
THE VARIOUS DIMENTIONS OF THE ROOMSOFFER A FORMIDABLE CHALLENGE TO OURMEMBERS. COMPANIES CAN ENTER FROMEITHER ENTRANCE OR 2 COMPANIES CAN BETRAINED AT ONCE USING OPPOSITE DOORSAS AN ATTACK ENTRANCE.
THE HALLWAY DOOR ALSO ADDS A UNIQUEDESIGN TO THE LAYOUT. THIS FEATURE CANBE USED TO TRAIN MEMBERS TO CONFINEFIRE OR PROTECT AN AREA DURING SEARCH,OR AS AN AREA OF REFUGE.
ONE ROOM WILL CONTAIN A PROPANEAIRFORCED HEATER TO SIMULATE THE“FIRE ROOM”. SINCE THE BUNKER GEARTOTALLY ENCAPSULATES OUR FORCES,THEY CAN BE TAUGHT TO “FEEL THE DOOR”FOR HEAT. A CAGE WILL SURROUND THEHEATER FOR SAFETY.
I ALSO HAVE DESIGNED A PADLOCK THATCAN BE “FORCED” WITH THE FORK ENDOF THE HALIGAN AND USED AGAIN.THISLOCK CAN BE USED ON A FEW DOORS TOSHOW MEMBERS HOW TO SEARCH PROPERLY.
IF NEEDED THIS “FIRE ROOM” CAN BE EQUIPPED WITH OUR SPARE “POWERJAMB” DEVICE AND USED TO TRAINFORCIBLE ENTRY DURING SEARCH.
I ALSO HAVE DESIGNED A WALL THAT CAN BEBREACHED TO SIMULATE A RESCUE ANDESCAPE.
FURNITURE FOR ALL ROOMS CAN EASILY BEFABRICATED AS WAS DONE WITH BLDG # 4 ATTHE ACADEMY.
I ALSO PLAN TO HOOK UP SPEAKERS WHICH WILL SIMULATE “FIREGROUND”SOUNDS THROUGHOUT THE COURSE. SEPARATE SPEAKERSWILL BE HOOKED UP IN VARIOUS ROOMS TOSIMULATE A CRYING BABY,COUGHING VICTIMAND CRY FOR HELP. EACH SOUND WILL MATCHTHE DUMMY SIZE THAT IS APPLICABLE.
THE FOLLOWING DIAGRAMS SHOW HOW THECOURSE WILL BE “TRANSFORMED” AFTER THE“MAYDAY” COLLAPSE IS GIVEN.
DURING THE TRAINING SESSION, SMOKELIKETINTED LENSES WILL BE PLACED OVER THESCOTT FACEPIECE SO THE INSTRUCTORS CANOBSERVE THE MEMBERS SAFELY.

FORCED HOTAIRPROPANE HEATER
METAL CAGE SIMILAR TO ONE BUILT AROUNDPOTBELLY STOVE IN SEARCH HUT AT ACADEMY.
ONE ROOM WILL BE DESIGNATED AS THE “FIRE ROOM”. THE PROPANE HEATER WILL ENABLE THEINSTRUCTOR TO ATTAIN A TEMPERATURE THAT WILL SIMULATE THE “HEAT” FROM THE FIRE.THIS METHOD OFFERS A SAFE CONTROL OF THE ROOM’S ATMOSPHERE. THE PROPANE HEATER WILL AFFORD A DESIRABLE TEMPERATURE WITHOUT THE HAZARD OF ANUNCONTROLLED OPEN FLAME.
METAL DOOR WILL HEAT UPDUE TO INTERIOR TEMPERATURE OFROOM.
HOLES ARE DRILLED THROUGH THE LOCK AND SHAFT AT POINTWHERE HASP ENTERS LOCK BODY. COTTER PINS OR SMALL NAILS ARE FORCED INTO THESE HOLES WHEN LOCK IS SET.AFTER THESE PINS ARE BROKEN BY THE FORCE OF THE FORKEND OF HALIGAN THEY ARE REPLACED AND THE LOCK IS SETAGAIN.
IN OPEN POSISTIONATTACHED SIDE OFHASP IS CUT AS CLOSEAS POSSIBLE TO BODYOF LOCK.
OPPOSITE SIDE CUTOUTIS GROUND DOWN TODISABLE ITS LOCKINGBALL.
HASP IS REPLACED IN LOCKED POSISTION FIRST.

“FIRE ROOM”
FALSE FLOOR AS WIDE AS HALLWAY TO BE BUILT OUT OF 2X4’S AND 3/4 INCH PLYWOOD.RAMPS WILL LEAD UP AND DOWN BOTH SIDES. AREA WILL BE APPROX. 5’8 X 6’.
BEFORE “MAYDAY” COLLAPSE, PLYWOOD ON HINGES WILL SWING STRAIGHT UP EVEN WITH ONE WALLTO EXPOSE THE BEAMS AND SIMULATE AN UNSTABLE FLOOR. UNITS WILL BE OBSERVED CROSSINGOVER THESE BEAMS.
PLYWOOD RAMPS
RAISED PLYWOOD WILL BE LOCKED IN PLACE WITH PADLOCKTHROUGH HOLE IN WOOD TO ASSURE SAFE POSISTIONING.
THE “POWER BREACH” DEVICE INSTALLS ON A WALL WITH STANDARD (16” ON CENTER) STUDS.THE DEVICE PROTECTS THE STUDS FROM DAMAGE AND CAN BE “RELOADED” AFTER EACH DRILL.THE AREA TO BE BROKEN IS 16” BY 3’. AFTER BREAKING THE SHEETROCK, THE MEMBER GOES INTOTHE ROOM USING THE LOW PROFILE MANUVER. A DUMMY IN FIRE GEAR WILL THEN BE “RESCUED”THROUGH THE OPENING. AFTER THE DRILL,THE FRAME IS LIFTED AND ANOTHER PIECE OF SHEET-ROCK IS PUT IN PLACE.
