Tracy: (still dancing) I cant wait till get into the Corny Collins show! Its just so cool. Especially LINK!

Penny: But Tracy, how many times Only cool kids are allowed on the show. I mean youre cool

and all in your own special way but

Tracy: GEE PENNY THANKS! Theres an ad for an audition to join the Show. Cause Lou-ann., youknow the girl with the hair? Yeah Corny said that she cant be on the show for 9 months. Shes on

leave or something.

Penny: Really? Huh, I wonder why?

(Both shrugs in silence)

Tracy: So Im going to audition! I mean I can dance better than thatAmber. Penny laughs and nods.

Maybe Link will even look at me!

(Both girls hold hands squeal and giggle)

Tracy: I can see it now, Penny. Ill wake up every day and all of Baltimore will be holding their breath

till they see me at 4. Ill dance till my legs drop! Ill be the coolest girl in school then. So cool and

pretty and (spins and spins)

(A door opens and Edna comes in)

Edna: TRACY TURNBLAUD, TURN THAT THING DOWN! (Walks to Tracy and Penny) You must think I

have garbage cans for ears. I have ironing to do.

(Door opens to let in Prudy, Pennys mom. Tracy and Penny hide behind a couch)

Prudy: Hello Edna, Im here for my ironing.

Prudy: (stares at her) Oh Edna what are you doing letting your daughter watch that show! Its black

folk music! Im telling you Edna you have to be careful with Tracy; shes got a devil in her. What with

her dancing to those peoples music and her having her hair up to there. Why its pure outrage!

Edna: (keeps on ironing) If you say so Prudy. Wheres Penny?

Prudy: Shes at home reading.

Edna: Hmm. really, thats strange cause isnt that them trying to escape? (Points to Tracy and Penny

trying to crawl to the door)

Tracy: MOOOOOM! PLEASE Im going to audition for The Corny Collins show! (Prudy gasp and stare

at their daughters)

Penny: Hi mom.

Prudy: PENELOPE MARIE PINGLETON YOU ARE SUPPOSED TO BE AT HOME READING! (Drags Penny

by the ear and starts scolding her until they get out of the door)

(Awkward silence, Tracys dad comes in after hearing the conversation)

Edna: Tracy Turnblaud you know Ive forbidden you to go near that studio. I dont know whats

gotten into you but now you want to audition for that show?! First the clothes then the hair ..

Tracy: Oh mom youre so fifties!

Edna: You talk some sense into that girls head Wilbur. She wants to go run- off and audition for thatCorny Collins show!

Tracy: Dad please! (Pouts at her mom and takes her hands) I could be one of the coolest kids in

town.

Wilbur: Oh Tracy .Sure Tracy you can go!

Edna: Wilbur! How can you let our little girl go! Im telling you theyll just judge her for what she

looks and make fun of her, and

Wilbur: Oh honey theres nothing wrong with dreaming! I mean if I didnt dream wouldnt I be with

you right now?

Edna: Alright she can go, but mark my words Wilbur if she goes home in tears youll be sleeping in

the basement for a month!

[Change scene to the studio with Amber, Link and other Council member girls]

Amber: I wonder what kind of losers are going to audition this year. Remember the ones last year?

(Everyone laughs)

Girl: UGHH especially that one girl with the hair! She couldnt even boogie at all. She even tripped

when she did the mashed potato.

Amber: Maybe because someone pushed her (smirks)

(Everyone laughs and Velma enters)

Velma: Okay everyone. Get in line.

(Other council member hopefuls come in with Tracy and Penny)

Velma: Oh. Good morning ladies lets see what you can do.

Council members: Twist. Twist. Mash Potato. Mambo.

Velma: Ready. Begin! Girls proceed.

(Girls roam and insult the other girls)

Link: Amber, theres no need to be mean!

(Velma goes in front of Tracy. Everyone stares at her)

Velma: Would you swim in an integrated pool?

Tracy: (smiles) I sure would! Integrations the new thing.

Velma: Not in Baltimore it isnt. You may go.

Tracy: (downcast and sad) Thanks I guess.

Penny: I think they secretly liked you. (Hugs Tracy and tries to console her)

[Next day in school Tracy gets detention for her GIANT hair-do]

(Tracy comes in and is shocked when she sees all the black kids on the Corny Collins show in the

room. Dancing)

Tracy: Uhm Hi Im Tracy.

Seaweed: Hello there Tracy Im Seaweed and this heres my gang.

Tracy: What are you guys doing?

Seaweed: Well what else do you think were doing? Baking? Were dancing!

Tracy: Cool! Could you teach me that?

Seaweed: Sure thing doll face! (Teaches Tracy the steps)

(Link sees her and invites her to the Sophomore Hop)

Corny: Hey Link, whos that girl out there dancing?

Link: Thats Tracy Turnblaud, she auditioned last time but Velma kicked her out.

Corny: Did she now? Well well see who really runs this show.

(Corny approaches Tracy)

Well Tracy Turnblaud. Youve got some skill and can sure charm the folks. How would you like to join

the Corny Collins show!

Tracy: REALLY!? THANK YOU! (Hugs Corny)

Corny: Let me down please. Alright go to the studio tomorrow and dont worry about Velma Ill takecare of her.

[The next day]

Penny: MR & MRS TURNBLAUDDDDD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Wilbur: Whoa Penny who died?

Edna: Penny does your mother know youre here?

Penny: Doesnt matter, turn on the TV know! (Out of breath)

(Roll call ends with Tracy. Penny, Edna and Wilbur scream out of delight)

Edna: My little girl! Dancing like a little star on a regular wide screen.

Penny: Listen!

(Corny interviews Tracy)

Corny: So trace, tell us a bit about yourself

Tracy: Well I loooove The Corny Collins show, and nothing else!

(Corny laughs)

Corny: Well a lil bird told me you have a heck of a dream tell us about it?

Tracy: Well, I would love to win Miss Teen Hairspray!

(Amber to Corny)

Amber: But Cornythats my title.

(Corny laughs it off)

Corny: When you win what would you do with the show?

Tracy: Uhm, well I would make every day Negro day!

Corny: Youre dream could soon come true Tracy. Miss Teen Hairspray is just one month away and

all you need are the votes of the people!

Amber: You have to vote for a person, Corny not a bus.

Corny: Oh Amber always the charmer.

(Amber screams and walks out along with the some girls)

Velma: Corny, what were you thinking hiring that that MOUNTAIN?

Corny: Well since shes a better dancer than your daughter I thought why not and besides Velma I do

the deciding for this show. Not you.

Velma: Everybody can be replaced Corny. You know that.

Corny: Gee, Velma how are you gonna have the Corny Collins show without Corny Collins?

(Corny walks out)

New Girl In Town

(Velma approaches Motormouth Maybelle)

Velma: Stop letting your girls sing songs that my girls are singing!

Maybelle: But those songs were written by MY girls! You have no right to tell me what to do!

Velma: It doesnt matter Maybelle one of these days Im going to get rid of you and this whole Negro

day. I mean who actually watches you but maids and lonely house wives? Please.

[Tracy, Link, Seaweed, Wilbur, Penny and Maybelle are at her record store]

Maybelle: Im telling you Tracy weve had enough of Velma stealing our songs and making hertalentless porcelain ninnies dance like theyre better than my girls! Enough is enough tomorrow

were marching to the station tomorrow!

Seaweed: Yeah mom! Enough is enough those white boys acting like theyre better than us. Screw it

lets go down there tomorrow and show them what we want!

Tracy: Yeah Penny me and Link are with you all!

All: YEAH!

Edna: Tracy dont you think this is dangerous honey?

Tracy: Mom, if we dont do this now then when?

Link: Im sorry Tracy but I just cant risk getting my big break.

Tracy: I understand.

Link: Im really sorry Trace please understand me. Ive been working so hard for this and with Velma

inviting movie agents for the Miss Hairspray Pageant I just cant risk it.

Tracy: I understand Link. Youd rather dance and be famous than stand up for something.

Link: Trace I-I

Edna: Come on Tracy; lets go home we have a long night tomorrow.

(Maybelle and the others protest on the station and are arrested. Tracy hides in Pennys house)

Penny: You can hide here Tracy. Mom doesnt really go down here in the bunker just to check it for

supplies.

Tracy: Thanks a lot Penny I knew that I could count on you.

(They hug but then the door opens and Pennys mother comes in)

Prudy: Penny! What are you doing hiding that fugitive!

Penny: Please mom whatever the news is saying its not true!

Tracy: Mrs. Pingleton please Ive been friends with your daughter for years! You know me better

than that.

Prudy: Keep quiet and stay here Tracy! Ill call the police tomorrow morning. As for you Penny go to

your room now!

(Prudy ties Penny on a chair in her room)

Prudy: You stay here until I can call Fr. Collins for your exorcism! (Sprinkles water on Penny)

(Seaweed comes through the window while Link goes to Ednas house to ask after Tracy)

Seaweed: Hey there Missy? You called for a rescue?

Penny: Oh Seaweed. I thought that the color of our skin would separate us from each other.

Corny: (Looking down cast and forced) *sigh* and now Ladies and Gentleman it is my obligation

(amber playfully hits him) to announce the winner of Miss Teenage Hairspray of 1962. It was so close

ladies and gentleman but Miss Teenage Hairspray Amber Von Tussle.
