Bye, Bye June! What a great month we had. Not only did we celebrate Flag day with such honor, but also honored our Fathers, and our children’s fathers.
We had another very successful convention in Wildwood! Thank you, George Coyne, and your entire team, that pulled the event off successfully once again. Everyone really enjoyed going
out to dinner or making dinner on their own this year. We had lots of good fun, great music and lots of laughs. It was so great to have so many new Members attend this year. If anyone has any ideas for next year, please leave a note in my mailbox outside the Secretary’s office. To all the Members, their friends and families that volunteered; OMG! You all do such hard work and keep with it to the end. I know that I am very grateful to all of you with a shout out to Joe, Karen, Bob, Connie, Vinnie, Seiggy, Lisa, Bruce B, Bruce C, Nick, Sue, Nancy and EVERYONE I HAVE MISSED.
Thank you to all the officers, PERs, Veterans Committee, the Boy Scouts Troop 50, and Richard Miller and Jackie Masterson for making Flag Day such a wonderful Ritual. Mark Levey, thank you for being our music man! Finally, to all of you that attended, thank you for your support.
So far, we are having great Bocce and Horseshoe season! Everyone is saying they are having a great time. George and I are so grateful that we didn’t miss opening day for the SCC
Unified Bocce League. The total joy all the participants had is indescribable! The volunteers for hospitality have been so gracious, I cannot thank them enough. Now four weeks into the fun, I’m hearing from the kids and their parents they wish this could go on through the summer. Maybe a fall Unified Bocce League?
I am looking forward to the Grand Lodge Convention in San Antonio, Texas during the first week in July. I have been to the Reno session and have heard how loud and proud NJ Elks are, and can’t wait to be a part of it! Go New Jersey!
Thank you to all the Veterans who have risked their lives to make sure the rest of us are free. I thank God every day that I live in America. As Americans, it is in our blood to work hard for everything we have.
Speaking of working hard; we are lucky to have Vincent Piccoli as an outstanding Member of our Lodge. I always see Vinnie working and working hard. He is made from the fabric that so many of our great Members are made from, the American fabric. Because of your dedication to our Lodge and Members, I am honored to call you the Elk of the Month in July! Thank you, Vinnie, for all you do.I am sorry for being the hold up on our July Newsletter. Jenel, you do a fantastic job!

Unified Bocce Ball is played every Saturday morning at 11:00. The players are having a great time both during the games and after while socializing with each other. We would like to thank all the buddies that have been coming out to play with the kids; Bruce & Kelly Costello for doing the cooking, Eileen Ryan for making sure the teams are set up and seeing that all the games stay on time. Skip for all his input and ideas on how to make this a fun event for the kids. This could not happen without everyone’s help. The last bocce ball game will be on July 21st. Thank you to Hank Manganielo for donating a bicycle to a young man who was very excited to get it. I am sure it will be used every day now that school is out. July 14th is Day on the Bay. This is a carnival type of event with games of chance and everyone always wins, boat rides, dancing, and food. The event starts at 11:00 and goes until 4:00. July 23rd is the Bus trip to Camp Moore. There is no more room on the bus, so if you signed up please be at the lodge by 7:45 because the bus will be leaving at 8:00. We are hoping to have a movie night for the kids in August, so please watch Facebook for the date and time. Have a safe and happy summer and be careful of the kids. Charlene Dolan & Kathy DeMey
Our Annual Scholarship Raffle will be available to purchase in June. There will be 100 tickets available at $100 each. Starting on Monday, July 16th and ending on September 17th, we will have a drawing for $500 each week, at 6:00 PM at the inside bar. Winner need not be present. You are never out...you can win multiple times! (No one has as yet, but the possibility is there!) Tickets will be available from Committee members only.
All proceeds are used for scholarships to local high school students. Jacqueline Masterson PER, Scholarship Committee Chairperson.
The Memorial Day picnic went as scheduled rain or shine. The house committee did a outstanding job with the food; the Jersey Shore Cats were great and had everything up and dancing. To get this event ready, thank you to the folks who came and beautifully decorated, and to all the donations of desserts. Our American Flag cake that was donated was a real treat presented as the band played and sang, “God Bless America.” Others like the Fire Department giving a demonstration and the American Legion coming and having a service, all together made this a fun day for all who attended. I would like to thank every one who gave a helping hand; it was great team work.

School Teachers/Tutors Needed
The ENF Com
mittee is considering applying for an Im
pact G
rant from EN
F to provide support and guidance the our m
ost vulnerable, and underused resources in our comm
unity – children in foster care.
In 2016, there were 429 children in O
cean County placed in foster care. O
nly about 10% of form
er foster care youth will
attend college, and only about 3% graduate, according to a
California-based nonprofit dedicated to foster children. This project proposal is for consideration by the Tom
s River Elks to pursue the im
pact grant from the Elks N
ational Foundation to support foster youth in our com
munity. The proposed
program is to create an ongoing educational supplem
ent for foster children and underprivileged or underserved children in m
iddle school or high school. The purpose of the program
would be to provide instruction and guidance on com
pleting high school and preparing for self-suffi
ciency and/or college. In addition to helping the underserved graduate, the intention of the project is to help students w
ho are working below
their capabilities as dem
onstrated by scores in reading and/or math
reach their potential. A positive PK-12 education experience
has the potential to be a powerful counterw
eight to the abuse, neglect, separation, im
permanence and other barriers
these vulnerable students may have experienced, as w
ell as providing a pathw
ay to success.
We
are looking
for Elks
Mem
bers that
have teaching
credentials who w
ill be able to volunteer one to two hours per
week to serve as tutors. O
ur focus will be on m
ath, English and reading.
The classes will include children from
both middle schools
and high schools. The Grant w
ill provide all of the required resources for the project, and m
ay include a stipend for the instructors. If you have experience in one on one tutoring, or feel that you w
ant to help these children to become better
educated and direct them to a better life in our com
plex society, please contact G
