Pharmaceutical Manufacturing Plan for Africa Business Plan

Initial meeting of potential partners in Nov 2012 Political launch at Jan 2013 Summit had to be postponed Launch now at Abuja +12 Heads of State Summit Meeting of the “Nucleus” of the consortium in Tunisia in March 2013 Those present – AfDB, WHO, ANDI, UNIDO – UNAIDS unable to attend at 

last minute plus snow storms in Paris and visa problems limited WHO attendance.

Agreed to collaborate in Ghana for early implementation of the BP Resource mobilisation activities on‐going Significant further work between nucleus to establish the detailed 

implementation structures and mechanisms for the working of the consortium.

Trade Associations

Federation of African Pharmaceutical Manufacturers Associations (FAPMA) Formal launch in Addis in January at the time of the Summit Board elections took place during closed session  Expanded Board planning session will take place in RSA at the end of June

Southern African Generic Medicines Association (SAGMA) Continued support of the secretariat Assessment of training needs of members completed SAGMA Conference focusing on advocacy to be held end June

African Vaccine Manufacturers Initiative (AVMI) Have been approached by nascent AVMI to assist in formal establishment of the 

organisation Further discussions imminent

Other Activities Developing a 4 day workshop to introduce the key dimensions of GMP to industry in 

Ghana and Kenya (would welcome discussions with WHO – no need to reinvent the wheel)

Intended to be a basis for ongoing support and coaching for implementing GMP upgrading projects across manufacturers.

After introduction of principles will focus on the most severe and critical deviationsidentified during assessments.

New team member with background in finance, business development, biotech, and biochemistry has joined the team. Will be driving work on developing a platform to facilitate business linkages of al shapes and sizes.

Working with St Gallen University and their Operational Excellence Programme (OPEX) to adopt methodology to assist African manufacturers to implement efficient production practices and to transfer methodology to African Academic  Institutions

Initial work on GMP roadmap undertaken  – need to engage with WHO EMP on the roadmap and associated risk assessment of the Essential Medicines List

Very preliminary discussions with IMS Health about entering SSA and capturing business focused market data.

Continuing to sponsor advanced industrial pharmacy training at St. Lukes Foundation
