GSM-R Network

A Train Controller is responsible for all trains in his area. He must be able to reach any of these trains quickly and without mistakes. It is established international practice (since many years) that each train has a number (which you may find in the time table).

GSM-R Function#1: The Train Controller simply dials the train number (not the MSISDN, which he anyway does not know!) followed by a two digits function code to reach the wanted function on the train (most commonly the Train Driver). This is achieved through Functional Addressing. Example: If the train number is 12345 and the Train Controller needs to reach the Train Driver he will dial 12345 followed by 01, i.e. 1234501

It must be very easy for the Train Driver to reach the responsible Train Controller!

GSM-R Function #2 : The Driver only has to press one single button on his radio to reach the Train Controller responsible for the area his train is just passing through. This is achieved through Location Dependent Addressing LDA (cell based or enhanced)

GSM-R Network

A Train Controller is responsible for all trains in his area. He must be able to reach all these trains at the same time for exchange of information of common interest.

GSM-R Function#3: The Train Controller simply dials the Short Code nnnn for Call All Trains in the Area. All Train Driver radios in the area are notified. The Train Drivers will take the call and start listening to the Train Controller. They also one by one can Push to Talk (PtT) and contribute to the information exchange. This is achieved through the Voice Group Call Service VGCS.

In Emergency situations a Train Driver must be able to warn all other trains at close range! The Train Controller for the Area must also be informed!

GSM-R Function#4: The Train Driver simply presses the red Railway Emergency button on his radio! All Train Driver radios at close range are notified and will automatically take the call! The Train Controller for the Area will also be alerted! This is achieved through the Railway Emergency Call REC.

UIC Advanced – GSMR Project

Packet switching mode for ETCS (GPRS & Others)Target : field test campaign GPRS QoS for ETCS to prove that

GPRS could be the right solution;

Based on the results of RFI and BV in GPRS QoS test campaigns, we are preparing live tests in real HSL environment for next period, and a frequency capacity study in mixed environment CSD & PSD

Frequency matters :Support the campaign for frequency band extension

Protect the GSM-R spectrum against interferences

(e.g. UMTS 900, MCPA)

GSM-R for ETCS• GSM-R is the bearer for ETCS• The GSM-R Network has to guarantee a high level of

Quality of Service in order to fulfill the needs of ETCS. • ETCS requires critical real time interactive data transfer; if

the movement authority is not available at the right time, the train will brake

• From strictly telecom point of view, only small application messages are sent periodically

• They are sent from OBU to RBC , as well as from RBC to OBU

ETCS Requirements• Subset 093 defines the

ETCS requirements for GSM-R

• Tests have been done in Belgium, France, Germany, Italy, Netherlands, Switzerland, Spain

The test results show a general fulfillment of the requirements

Total Network vs. GSM-R Planned Network

Total Railway Network : 220752 Km

Planned with GSM-R : 147719 Km

In Europe,67 % of the Railway Network is planned to be covered with GSM-R; from this 52101 km , which means 35,2% are in operation!

Conclusions

GSM-R is a proven system, taken into account all over Europe, and not only

Starting 2008, from an implementing system, we speak about a working system

End of 2007 we have 5 administrations migrated, that means more than 47,700km migrated

It was proven to work at 500 km/h!
