6 PODS Implementation
Intended Audience
• GIS/IT professionals• New to pipeline industry• Little or no exposure to PODS
PODS Training – both PODS Basics and PODS Advanced – create a better understanding of PODS Standards and PODS implementations through geospatial and relational database applications.
6 PODS BASICSPreparing for PODS Implementation

• Technology agnostic• Open to members• Member-directed, Volunteer run• Developed using best technology and
practices—taking us well into future• Multiple physical implementations

Linear Referencing Definition
• A single linear feature is used as a reference for locating pipeline features and characteristics along the length of the line.
• Begins with a centerline - the core of Linear Referencing. Valves, meters, etc. are placed by referencing the measured centerline distance.

What is the PODS Data Model?
The PODS Data Model is…
• a plan defining how all vital pipeline data is connected, stored, and processed.
• “pipeline-centric.”• designed to reside on spatial (ESRI
GIS) and non-spatial platforms.• GIS Neutral and Vendor neutral
Relational Databases• Normalization of disparate data into a Relational Database
• A database design method that organizes information into multiple related tables to minimize data redundancy
• Information goes into the correct table, free of duplicates• Tables are related to each other• PODS database structure is normalized

PODS Data Model
What can I do with my data once its in PODS?
Not Much…PODS is just the container for
your data.
PODS
You’ll need additional 3rd party tools to convert data, load, maintain, map,
analyze, update, and report

PODS Implementation Panel
Panel Discussion Questions
• Who should be at the table? - Getting the right people on board and building consensus
• Who will own/implement PODS? What will “ownership” entail from a data management perspective?
• What types of service providers should I engage and at what implementation phase? Which services are key?
