The heart monitor will be worn by patients experiencing arrhythmic patterns and will record the information taken from the patient. Information will be sent to Dr. Frist Cardiology Group in Nashville. Within 72 hours the information will be analyzed and sent back to the doctor. The “Resusci-Annie” is a life-like mannequin that facilitates training in first aid resuscitations. Annie will be available to all hospital personnel and interested civic groups for training purposes. These instruments were financed entirely by a fund begun by doctors and civic groups in the late 1950’s to finance a vaccination drive to fight polio. The program was a success and the remainder of the fund, along with new donations, made the purchases possible. City gets HUD grant $702,300 for project Mayor Joe Taylor announced this week that Representative Ed Jones has informed him the Department of Housing and Urban Development had approved a grant in the amount of $702,300 for the City of Brownsville. The grant allows the city to continue housing and rehabilitation and public facilities improvements. The new grant will probably be used to improve streets, gutters, drainage and housing in the north central section of town. Areas now designated are Bradford, Tyus, Reid, Church and Cherry Streets, and possibly some other areas, the Mayor said. Cats score 82 points, opposition only 6 After meeting three opponents, the Tomcats have scored 82 points while holding the opposition to 6. John Dancy leads the offense with a total 307 yards followed by Terry Taylor with 172. Bill Taylor leads in pass receptions with 2 snags for 45.5 average yards. The Tomcats have accomplished 39 first downs and has held the opposition to 18. The defense has had 101 tackles with Doug Taylor at 26, Nevil Hess at 21, and David Mitchell at 20 leading the pack. The defense has scored one TD and allowed one. Thursday, September 27, 1990 Western Sizzlin’ restaurant coming A franchise steak house, the Western Sizzlin’ Restaurant, received Brownsville Planning Commission approval Monday night to build a 7,800 square foot restaurant adjacent to I-40 off Highway 76. The site approval, according to builder David Coulston, meant that construction would begin “tomorrow.” Owners hope to have the restaurant open by the first of January. Prize winning hams Charlie Tripp, head of Tripp Country Hams of Brownsville, was notified last week that two of his hams had won two significant honors at two state competitions. A Tripp ham entered in the Tennessee State Fair in Nashville was judged Grand Champion, and another Tripp ham was named Grand Champion at the Mid-South Fair in Memphis. Both hams won in the whole ham categories, where they are judged on appearance, feel, texture, and look-not on taste. Tripp was Grand Champion at the Mid-South Fair in 1989 as well. Haywood Junior High Warriors conquer Covington The Haywood Junior High Warriors, under the direction of Coach Mike Young, chalked up their second win of the season, defeating Covington Crestview Tuesday, September 18. The first turnover of the game occurred when Warrior Jake Waddell intercepted a pass. Clifford Witherspoon, halfback, ran the ball into the end zone from six yards out. Tailback Marcus Henley swept in for the two-point conversion. Coach Young praised linebackers Dexter Hines and Jake Waddell for outstanding play. Cleadis Russell, Fred Brown, Keith Powell and Tiant Lee offered good defensive pressure. Coach Young substituted liberally, putting in 50 Warriors for field time. With money in the bank and experience under their belts, Habitat volunteers say they will begin taking applications from prospective homeowners during October, anticipating beginning the next home in late winter or early spring. Habitat’s goal is to eliminate substandard housing by partnering with families to build adequate, affordable housing that is then sold to a family without profit or interest. Edward Shirley, Jr. was born January 16, 1960 to Artis Deberry Shirley and Edward Shirley, Sr. In the early morning hours of September 2, 2010, after a long illness, Edward went home to be with the Lord. Edward grew up in Brownsville, TN, attended the public schools of Haywood County and was a 1979 graduate of Haywood High School. Edward accepted Christ at an early age and grew up attending the Farmer’s Chapel C.M.E. Church of Brownsville. After high school, he moved to Great Falls, Montana, later relocating to Memphis, TN. He was employed by the Kroger Company and later joined the Dollar General Stores as a manager. Mr. Morris was born February 9, 1930 in Hardeman County, the son of the late Charlie Hugh Morris and Maggie Mae Clutts Morris and lived most of his life in Haywood County. He was a US Army veteran serving during the Korean War and a member of Harmony Baptist Church near Whiteville. Services were held Sunday, September 19, 2010 at Harmony Baptist Church near Whiteville with burial in the Harmony Baptist Cemetery. Doctors donate equipment

The staff doctors at Haywood Park General Hospital recently donated a Holter monitor and a “Resusi-Annie” training dummy for resuscitation methods. The heart monitor will be worn by patients experiencing arrhythmic patterns and will record the information taken from the patient. Information will be sent to Dr. Frist Cardiology Group in Nashville. Within 72 hours the information will be analyzed and sent back to the doctor.

The “Resusci-Annie” is a life-like mannequin that facilitates training in fi rst aid resuscitations. Annie will be available to all hospital personnel and interested civic groups for training purposes.

Habitat plans second house

With the paint barely dry on Gusta Watkin’s house on South Washington, Haywood County Habitat for Humanity Chapter organizers say they’re ready to get started on a second one. Edward Shirley, Jr. was born January 16, 1960 to Artis Deberry Shirley and Edward Shirley, Sr. In the early morning hours of September 2, 2010, after a long illness, Edward went home to be with the Lord. Edward grew up in Brownsville, TN, attended the public schools of Haywood County and was a 1979 graduate of Haywood High School.

Edward accepted Christ at an early age and grew up attending the Farmer’s Chapel C.M.E. Church of Brownsville.

After high school, he moved to Great Falls, Montana, later relocating to Memphis, TN. He was employed by the Kroger Company and later joined the Dollar General Stores as a manager.
