D., native of West Finley township,active in the Presbyterian ministry forty years and in service aschaplain of an artillery unit overseas in the World War, died atTarrytown, N. Y., Sunday, Jan. 12th. in his 66th year. The funeralservice was held Wednesday afternoon, in the Presbyterian church atRochester, Pa., where he had held a pastorate. Interment was in acemetery at Beaver, pa Mr. Atkinson was born in Beham Knob School District, west Finleytownship, March 28, 1870, son of James C. and Sarah Kimmins Atkin-son, who resided down the slope to the right as one approachesBeham from the east. He was a pupil of Beham School. He was grad-uated from Wooster Ohio College. His father was a faithful elder inWest Union Presbyterian Church, Dallas, where the son was in theSunday School and church. He entered the ministry, being grad-uated from western Theological Seminary, Pittsburgh. He was unitedin marriage with Miss Bertha Carroll, of his native community.Caldwell, Ohio Presbyterian Church was an early pastorate he held.While residing in Ohio he was connected with a military organi-zation and when the United States entered the World War his organi-zationi:was formed into an artillery unit, which he served aschaplain. Wray Laird, formerly of Claysville, was a captain in thesame unit. Both were honored by France for their meritoriousservice. Since then Mr. Atkinson held a pastorate at Rochester,Pa., and more recently was pastor at Long Island, N. Y. Mrs. EvaAtkinson Giles, of Claysville, whose death occurred in 1934, was asister of deceased.He leaves his wife, a daughter. Helen, wife of J. M. Cowan, Tarry-toen, N. The funeral servicewas held inClaysville presbyterianChurch, where she had been amember 45 years, at two o'clock, Mondayafternoon. The service wasconducted by her pastor, Rev. O. S. Fowler, who was assistedbyRev.H. L. Henderson. Inhis address Rev. Fowler spoke of the Chris-tian's hope andvictoryand of her deep faith. It was remarkedafterwardthat the cloUdless blue sky overheadtypifiedthe uncloudedfaithshe possessed. There were manybeautiful flowers and the hymnnumbers were favorites of Mrs. Giles. She was connectedwith the SundaySchool,member of the Woman's Home MissionarySociety, and servedas itspresident. Her husband was a trustee of the congregation when-thepresent buildingwas erected. Insocial circles Mrs. Giles was acharter member of the Mothers' Club. and a charter member of EveningStar Chapter Order of the EasternStar. Most all of her residencehere she resided on Elmstreet, and her splendidneighborlinessthere went far beyonditslimits. She was unitedinmarriage with Samuel Atkinson, whose father, JohnAtkinson,operateda mill on Castleman's Runand was anundergroundrailroadconducter of ante-bellumdays. Samuel assistedhis father inthatwork, servedinCompanyK First West Virginia Cavalryinthe UnionArmy inthe Civil War, and was a member of the West Virginia legis-lature. Mr. and Mrs. Atkinsonresideda number of years on the oldhome place and were members of west Alexander UnitedPresbyterianChurch. It is saidthat whatever the conditionof roads or weathertheywere always faithful attendantsat church, though it was a lotharder to travel ina buggy or horse back through the mud then thanbyauto today. There arestill to be seen some of the remnants ofthe oldAtkinsonmill belowPotomac which was no doubt built morethana centuryago. The oldmill was firedseveral times, becauseas a of principle, Mr. Atkinson helped slaves to the freedomto which theywere entitled. But beingalert the owner hadhissons, includingSamuel, sleepinthe mill at night, and each timethe fire was discovered. The last consignment of slaves aidedthere was a weekend inSeptember, 1860. Samuel took the motherand childhorse backwhile he walkedbythe horse and his brother,Ewing, went with the husband to the three-storybrickbuildingofJudge McKeever inWest Middletown, the next stationon the system.On the waySamuel was interceptedbyparties insearchof slaves.He had his charges ride on while he held a successful parleywiththe searchers. Grandstaff, ofwashington, Pennsylvania, and Rev. WilliamA.James C. Atkinson was born inVirginia and came as a boy to Delawarecounty,Ohio, where he grewtomanhood and where he was married. Hisoccupation was that of a farmer and he followed thisall his life.In 1886 he returned to Pennsylvania and died inhis washington countyhome, January 14, 1899, aged seventy-one years. His wife died in1897, aged sixty-five years. Both were members of the Presbyterianchurch in which he was a rUlingelder for thirty-five years.The paternal grandfather of Rev. Atkinson was George Atkinson, anative of Virginia and of Scotch-Irishdescent. His wife was SusannaFaris, alsoa native of Virginia and of Scotch-Irishancestry. Thegrandfather was born in 1801, andafter his marriage in 1826, came toDelaware county, Ohio, and was one of the earlysettlers of thatcounty. He was a farmer andinlater years engaged instockraising.In 1805, with a viewof seekinga better locationfor his business,he went to Ford county, Illinois, and establisheda home. After afewyears on a farmhe m o v e ~ to paxton in the same county, where hecontinued toliveuntil his death, May JO, 1885, at the age ofeighty-four years. His wife died inDelaware county, Ohio, in 1859,at the age of 51 years. Intheir family of children were the follow-ing. Livingat home onhis father's farmhe was accustomed toall the work incident to farmlife. He attended the district schools andafter completingtheelementarystudies in these achools, he attendeda select school fortwo years. He graduated fromthat institutionin 1896, and was soon afterward ordainedas a minister and installedas a pastor of the Caldwell and Sharo (Ohio) presbyterianchurches.He continued inthis, his first pastoral charge, for more than sevenyears, and then went to Belle Center, Ohio, where he became pastor ofthe First Presbyterianchurchand continued inthis charge for sixyears and a half.
