ASTHMA We have been advised by the School Health Nurse Team regarding asthma diagnoses and treatment. If your child has been diagnosed with asthma by a doctor, you need to notify the school. The nurse advised that every child that has been diagnosed with asthma should have an annual review with their GP. It is the responsibility of the parents to ensure that any inhalers that are in school have not passed their expiry date. We have been advised against using any inhalers for anyone other than the child to whom the inhaler has been prescribed. It is therefore VITAL that your child has a satisfactory inhaler in school at all times. If your child has previously been diagnosed with asthma but no longer needs an inhaler, or you wish to check your child’s medical record, please contact the Office. If we do have them recorded as suffering from asthma but they do not have an in-date inhaler in school, they may not be allowed to participate in certain school activities, especially off-site activities.

Friday Night is Nit Night! Headlice are making a regular nuisance of themselves in school. If your child has headlice they should be treated immediately. You do not always need to use a headlice treatment. Washing the hair, applying plenty of conditioner and then using a headlice comb to remove the lice is also effective. The most important thing to remember is to re-check the hair after 3-5 days and again after 10-12 days later to remove any newly-hatched lice. For further information please visit http://www.nhs.uk/conditions/head-lice/Pages/Treatment.aspx

FJS GOES GLOBAL!! Oliver, in Class 3, took the opportunity for FJS to go global when his grandparents went on holiday recently. As part of their holiday they stopped off at the South Pole, and to mark the occasion, Oliver designed a flag which his classmates then added a symbol to which represented the determination of Oliver’s grandparents to reach their goal!

RECIPE IDEA TO TRY AT HOME! During the rest of the school year, Mrs Smith, our school cook, will be suggesting recipes for popular dishes that you could try at home with your children. This newsletter’s recipe suggestion is for Spaghetti Bolognese.

Spaghetti Bolognese To serve 6

Ingredients: 1 kg lean minced beef 2 onions 2 courgettes – grated 4 large carrots – grated 2-3 garlic cloves 2x400g cans chopped tomatoes 3-4 tsp dried mixed herbs (or you could use fresh oregano and thyme) 2 tbsp tomato puree 2 stock cubes 1½ pints water Olive oil for frying Optional: you could add mushrooms or bacon Recipe: Fry mince in a little olive oil, and add bacon if using. Add onions and garlic and fry until soft and the meat is browned. Add tomato puree, tinned tomatoes and grated veg. Stir in, then add the herbs. Add the stock cubes, crumbled over the pan, and the water. Stir and simmer for 45 minutes to 1 hour. Add more water if needed and if you would like a thicker sauce, simply thicken with some gravy granules. Serve with cooked spaghetti or pasta shapes. Lovely with garlic bread and salad!!

New After School Construction Club Starting Next Term. The club will meet in the hall on Thursdays when FILMCLUB is NOT running and we will use Lego, Polydrons and other building materials to construct models. Look out for more information next term.

Inter-school indoor athletics competition On Monday 27th January a team of 19 year 5 and 6 children took part in the indoor athletics

competition at Faringdon Leisure Centre. Eleven schools took part altogether from across the

Faringdon and Wantage Partnerships with around 180 children participating altogether. Each

child from our team took part in two track and two field events, ranging from long jump and

javelin throwing in the field events to obstacle and

relay racing in the track events.

It was a really fun afternoon and everyone took

part in each of their events with enthusiasm and

with a positive sporting attitude. FJS came a very

creditable 5th overall and each member of the team

represented the school magnificently.

The girl’s team included: Emma, Rutendo, Lily, Naomi,

Lucy, Tabby, Bethanie, Mia.

The boy’s team: Jamie, Liam, Aaron, Sammy, Javier,

Fabian, Scott, Liam, James, Hamish.
