heta Xi’s basement has had a rough past, but now renovations have been per- ormed that makes it look nicer and last longer. Te pool room has seen everything rom ooding, to halloween parties, to watching ootball games, and just playing pool. Te pool room is one o the most used rooms in the house, which posed two prob- lems: it didn’t look good, and mom’s sleeping quarters were located directly above it. We sought out to x this problem out o respect or our house mother and give us something to be proud o. Te week ater everyone moved out, the construction crew moved in. We were armed with hammers, saws, power drills, a hot wa- ter pressure washer, and a truckload o mate- rials. We knew our main objective o sound- proong the pool room was going to be no easy task. Our plan to soundproo the basement was to incorporate a special sound deaden- ing ber board underneath all ceiling cover- ings as well as covering the walls with acous- tic carpeting to absorb the sound. Te plan also called or new composite tile oor, new paint on all suraces, new lighting, and a new sound system. We thought not only should we spruce up the pool room, but the rest o the basement would need just a little work to keep it up to par.  Ater the ceiling was torn out, dr ywall re- moved, and oor pressure washed to remove the eroding oor paint, more insulation was put in the ceiling. Finally there was a clean slate to work with. Te sound ber board was put up on the ceiling and covered with drywall in a staggered pattern to prevent the seams rom cracking and painted at white. New, low-prole, round uorescent lights were installed on the ceiling. All the pine paneling was put back up to cover up the steam pipes and painted blue. Recessed hal- ogen lighting was installed in the blue over- hang to keep visibility up on the perimeter o the room instead o having dark corners like beore. Wall sections were built, put into place, then insulated. Te bottom our eet were covered with hal inch OSB and the re- maining two and a hal eet were drywall. Te OSB creates a more sturdy section that resists puncturing and was a good sur- ace to glue the tan colored acoustic carpet to. Te drywall was painted a neutral yellow color to keep in with color scheme. Some weeks later, laid the tan VC ooring. Te room was nished of with a navy blue chair rail and cove base, new aceplates and switches, and new at panel V mount and sound system. otal, the group clocked in over 60 hours o work in 6 days. For nishing touches, the Teta Xi crest was painted at the bottom o the stairwell and words “Teta Xi Fraternity” were writ- ten on the upper west wall o the pool room. Overall, the basement’s transormation was well needed, looks great, and will last a long time. As or soundproong, our ambitions were a little out o reach. Music and loud noises can still be heard through the oor, but mom did tell us it had improved. Even though the main goal o completely sound- proong ell shy o being successul, the pool room is a much more inviting place or us to use. Trough all this, we enjoyed working to- gether and making stronger riendships that will benet our brotherhood. Trough our eforts o working together, we can all now be proud o our basement and shows what some willing guys and a little determination can accomplish.
