Meet Our Pirates – William MayhemWe have ourselves a fine crew

aboard the Pirate Ship Black Raven, and we thought it only proper thatyou get to meet them and hear theirstories. So we’ll be having a smallwrite-up about each of our piratesand wenches, randomly drawn, foryour amusement. For our 2nd articlein a series of 10, we’ll introduce youto our very own pirate magician, William Mayhem.

Hailing from some unknown reaches of Scotland,William Mayhem was born in the spring of 1666 andturned to piracy to seek out his fortunes. In his travelsaround the world, he found a penchant for illusionsand magic. His weapons of choice were none otherthan a rapier, his wit, and a deck of cards. While inthe seaport of Cardiff, England, Mayhem’s sleight ofhand caused a disagreement with a fellow card player. When the resulting argument led to the man’s intro-duction into the afterlife, William set sail for theCaribbean and St. Augustine, turning his trade into aviable skill both on land and at sea. We aboard theBlack Raven welcome him as our Pirate Magician, andlet his talents and tricks bring us the good fortune thathas followed him since he arrived.

Yesterday’s Bridge, Tomorrow’s Riprap*Some 7,000 tons of concrete are filling the south

end of Riberia Street in one of the largest recyclingprojects on record.

The concrete is the remains of the temporary Bridgeof Lions, and the blocks and rubble will be used toriprap a marsh area. Incoming City Manager JohnRegan negotiated a multilateral agreement with bridgecontractor Skanska, the Florida Department ofTransportation (FDOT), the St. Augustine PortAuthority, and state Department of EnvironmentalProtection (DEP) for the riprap.

For FDOT, the move saves the cost of more distanthauling. For the city, it reduces from nearly $1 millionto about $100,000 the cost of a DEP-mandated secur-ing of the Riberia Street marsh area.

City Archaeologist Carl Halbirt is gathering the evi-dence that Aviles Street is the oldest in continuous usein North America.

A redesign project at the north end of the street hasbrought him in to probe beneath the surface, and so farhe’s found artifacts identifying at least 13 distinct roadsurfaces dating from the early 1600s, and HenryFlagler's road improvements of the late 1800s.

Aviles Street was part of our original town plan, laid out by Spanish royal ordinance in 1573, thirty-four years before the English landed at Jamestown andnearly 200 years before the establishment of theUnited State of America.

Installation of mooring fields in the city’s bay andSalt Run is expected to continue through August.Location reservations were accepted in June. A total of178 city-regulated moorings will be installed, 80 inSalt Run, and 28 north and 70 south of the Bridge ofLions.

And the city has begun streetscape improvementsfor its upcoming commemorations with the bulldozingof the former car wash at US 1 and King Street, one ofthe city’s entrance corridors. It will be landscaped toimprove the corridor.
