RANDOM STUFF 2
“Remember you are dust and unto dust you shall return.” Those are the words we here on Ash
Wednesday when we get ashes in the sign of the cross on the forehead. In the Old Testament
putting ashes on your head was done either because a person felt bad about a sin, felt bad about
the sins of Israel against God, or they wanted to get God’s attention to help save them from an
impending doom.
When I hear those words, it reminds me that life is fragile, all I have is today, my time here is short, and I want to
live life to the fullest. Last year there was a popular pop song about the acronym YOLO: “You Only Live Once.”
I preached a homily about that at the high school last year. I liked to bring into my homilies there different things
the kids encountered on TV or radio. I emphasized that in the song about YOLO, their emphasis was on getting
hammered on drinking and drugs and having sex outside of marriage.
I asked them if you follow YOLO according to that song, will you go to heaven? I also asked will this make you
happy? I never thought much about the music I listened to growing up and if it had a good message. I’m sure
those kids don’t think about the lyrics too much either when they sing along.
I told the kids I live everyday like I only live once and I’m extremely happy. Our image of happiness can be a lie.
When we chase that lie that was designed for us on TV and aren’t happy, that can be disappointing. That is what
I’m trying to help the kids with. Doing God’s will is what makes us happy.
“Remember you are dust and unto dust you shall return.” “YOLO: You Only Live Once.” Lent is a good reminder
of that. Lent is a good time to look at priorities in our lives and turn to God and repent when needed.
Fr. Greg
There will be no morning Mass on Tuesday, March 11th.
For Lent I will be offering an additional time to receive the sacrament of confession-Sunday
morning from 7:30am—8:00am in addition to Saturday from 4:00pm-4:30pm.
The next 13th Apostle Youth Group for kids in 6th-12th grade will be Sunday March 16th from 5:00-
6:00 pm. We will hear about St. Paul and Lent for faith. For fun we will have a bonfire. I will
supply the graham crackers and bread. Please bring the other ingredients you would like to
use for pudgy pies and smores. -Fr. Greg
How can we speak about God?
By taking as our starting point the perfections of man and of the other creatures which are a reflection,
albeit a limited one, of the infinite perfection of God, we are able to speak about God with all people.
We must, however, continually purify our language insofar as it is image-bound and imperfect, realizing
that we can never fully express the infinite mystery of God. What does God reveal to man?
God in his goodness and wisdom reveals himself. With deeds and words, he reveals himself and his plan
of loving goodness which he decreed from all eternity in Christ. According to this plan, all people by
the grace of the Holy Spirit are to share in the divine life as adopted “sons” in the only begotten Son of
God. What are the first stages of God's Revelation?
From the very beginning, God manifested himself to our first parents, Adam and Eve, and invited them
to intimate communion with himself. After their fall, he did not cease his revelation to them but
promised salvation for all their descendants. After the flood, he made a covenant with Noah, a
covenant between himself and all living beings.

SAINT OF THE WEEK
St. Katharine Drexel(1858-1955) If your father is an international banker and you ride in a
private railroad car, you are not likely to be drawn into a life
of voluntary poverty. But if your mother opens your home to
the poor three days each week and your father spends half
an hour each evening in prayer, it is not impossible that you
will devote your life to the poor and give away millions of
dollars. Katharine Drexel did that.
She was born in Philadelphia in 1858. She had an excellent
education and traveled widely. As a rich girl, she had a
grand debut into society. But when she nursed her step-
mother through a three-year terminal illness, she saw that all
the Drexel money could not buy safety from pain or death,
and her life took a profound turn.
She had always been interested in the plight of the Indians,
having been appalled by what she read in Helen Hunt Jack-
son’s A Century of Dishonor. While on a European tour, she
met Pope Leo XIII and asked him to send more missionaries
to Wyoming for her friend Bishop James O’Connor. The pope
replied, “Why don’t you become a missionary?” His answer
shocked her into considering new possibilities.
Back home, Katharine visited the Dakotas, met the Sioux
leader Red Cloud and began her systematic aid to Indian
missions.
She could easily have married. But after much discussion
with Bishop O’Connor, she wrote in 1889, “The feast of St.
Joseph brought me the grace to give the remainder of my
life to the Indians and the Colored.” Newspaper headlines
screamed “Gives Up Seven Million!”
After three and a half years of training, she and her first band
of nuns (Sisters of the Blessed Sacrament for Indians and Col-
ored) opened a boarding school in Santa Fe. A string of
foundations followed. By 1942 she had a system of black
Catholic schools in 13 states, plus 40 mission centers and 23
rural schools. Segregationists harassed her work, even burn-
ing a school in Pennsylvania. In all, she established 50 mis-
sions for Indians in 16 states.
Two saints met when Katharine was advised by Mother
Cabrini about the “politics” of getting her Order’s Rule ap-
proved in Rome. Her crowning achievement was the found-
ing of Xavier University in New Orleans, the first Catholic uni-
versity in the United States for African Americans.
At 77, she suffered a heart attack and was forced to retire.
Apparently her life was over. But now came almost 20 years
of quiet, intense prayer from a small room overlooking the
sanctuary. Small notebooks and slips of paper record her
various prayers, ceaseless aspirations and meditation. She
died at 96 and was canonized in 2000.

SUNDAY GOSPEL REFLECTION 6
Reflecting On Sunday’s Readings
THE FIRST SUNDAY OF LENT—March 9, 2014
Introduction: Lent, the forty days and nights proceeding Easter, should be a meaningful time of prepa-
ration which we look forward to with anticipation. The early church saw these days as preparation not
only for candidates presenting themselves for baptism, but also for the entire church.
Lent can be a time of both sorrow and joy as we reflect on our humanity and on him who is the re-
deemer of our humanity. During Lent, as we read, pray, and reflect we often sadly recognize our hard-
ness of heart, willful disobedience, and lukewarm devotion. This very recognition of our stained human-
ity should give us hope. As C.S. Lewis said, “It is when we notice the dirt that God is most present in us, it
is the very sign of his presence.”
St. Francis de Sales tells of St. Catherine of Siena’s struggle with temptation. “This temptation contin-
ued for a long time until our Lord one day appeared to her and she said to him, ‘Where were you, my
sweet Lord, when my heart was filled with such a great darkness and filth?’ He answered, ‘My daugh-
ter, I was within your heart.’ ‘But how could you dwell within my heart where there was so much impu-
rity?’ she asked, ‘Is it possible that you could dwell in so foul a place?’ Our Lord replied to her, ‘Tell me,
did the filthy thought within your heart bring you pleasure or gloom, grief or delight?’ and she said, ‘The
very greatest grief and gloom.’ He replied, ‘Who placed this great grief and gloom in your heart but
me who remained hidden in the very center of your soul? My daughter, believe me, if I had not been
present there those thoughts which beset your will and which you could not drive away would certainly
have conquered and entered into it. Once accepted with pleasure by your free will, they would have
brought death to your soul. Since I was present within you, I put that displeasure and resistance in your
heart and thus enabled it to reject the temptation as far as it could. When unable to do as much as it
wanted to it felt still greater displeasure and dislike for both the temptation and for itself. Thus these trials
have been a great source of merit and profit for you and have greatly increased your strength and vir-
tue’”
This Sunday’s Gospel reading gives us immense insight into the nature of temptation and the source
of strength to overcome temptation. Someone, speaking of temptation has said, “We can’t prevent
the birds from flying overhead but we can prevent them from building a nest in our hair.” So it is with
temptation. We cannot prevent our soul from being subjected to temptation, it is part of the human
drama. However, we don’t need to surrender to it.
Even Jesus, the Son of God was put to the test by Satan. Satan pulled out all the stops and ap-
pealed to all of man’s senses and inner desires for self preservation and glorification to tempt Jesus to
step outside of the Father’s will. But Jesus did not succumb. In his experience overcoming temptation
Jesus provides the key elements we need for overcoming temptation also. As a Jewish man Jesus was
schooled in sacred Scripture to understand both the nature of the Father, and his expectations of us for
living a holy life and Jesus was already determined that he would submit to the Father’s will, regardless.
So when a tempting situation was offered to him he knew the Father’s will as revealed in the Scripture,
and willingly surrendered his will to the Father’s.
Jesus’ experience and St. Francis de Sales’ advice have one thing in common, the Word of God.
Jesus who is the Living Word used the written Word to safely lead him out of temptation’s trap. St. Fran-
cis de Sales rightly identified the indwelling Word of God as the one who safely turns our dark days of
temptation into stepping stones of strength and virtue. As we enter these days of Lent, let’s not primarily
fasten our eyes on our stained humanity but rather upon him who is the answer to that stain, the Word
of God, the indwelling presence of Jesus.

Needed: Communion Ministers at Aspirus Hospital
As faithful Catholics are aware, Holy Communion
brings us spiritual and emotional strength to cope with
many of life’s difficult moments. For those of us blessed
with good or adequate health, we have the privilege of
attending Sunday or weekday Mass and receiving
Christ’s presence there to strengthen us for the week.
Hospitalized patients are just as needy, and long for
Christ to be brought to them in their pain and suffering.
Could you spare an hour a week or month to be the
feet that enable Christ to visit and comfort the sick? You
chose the day, and the frequency. The hours are
between 8am & 10am every day of the week. We
provide training.
