The Six Ws of Chanukah

1

Everyone! Men, women, and children light the menorah. Sometimes only one menorah per household is lit. Who lights?

What is lit? A menorah/chanukiah with 9 branches, one of which is taller than the others. It is called a shamash.

The shamash can be all the way on one side of the menorah or in the middle of the menorah. Olive oil, other oils, or candles.

The eight branches of a menorah symbolize the eight days the menorah burned. But why is their a ninth called the shamash? We are instructed not to use the chanukah lights for any purpose beyond the mitzvah of (publicizing the miracle). We light the shamash, an extra candle, so that if a we use the light of the menorah accidentally, we can say that he was only using the shamash candle.

What is lit? Is it Kosher? Check your answers.

When do we light?

On the eight days of chanukah. The candles are lit after dark. The candles should burn for at least 30 minutes. On Friday, we light the Chanukah candles before Shabbat before the Shabbat candles, and they must stay lit for at least 30 minutes after dark (bigger candles)

5When do we light on Fridays (shabbat)? The candles are lit right before sunset, then the shabbat candles are lit. When do we light motzei shabbat? Some say the chanukah candles are lit after havdalah because the we say havdalah more often and therefore it takes preference ( , ). Others disagree and maintain that we light the chanukah candles before havdalah because we want shabbat to continue as long as possible ( ).

Where & why do we light? Candles are lit on Chanukah to publicize the miracle of Chanukah. Therefore, candles are lit in a place where they are visible to others: window sills, doorways, outside, etc.

6

What do we do? How? From left to right, every night starting with the newest candle.Use only shamash to light other candles.
