Lewis Library building is of Italianate design, a late
nineteenth century style well-characterized in this building
in the round-arched windows and doors, the accentuated
quoins, the belt course dividing first and second floors, and
the high bracketed cornice with its broad overhang.
The building is two stories high and constructed of brick
with cast iron columns for interior support. The exterior
walls are presently painted yellow. Cornice, trim, and brick
quoins are painted white.
Main entrance (south) is a handsome variation of the Palladian
motive having triple round arches. The large central arched
opening extends the full height of the first floor from top
of foundation course to the belt bour 3. It is flanked by
lesser arched openings. A wrought iron gate encloses all
three arched openings of this entrance. This triple arched
main entrance opens into a vestibule with curving iron stair
cases to left and right which give access to the second
floor. A subsidiary door with arched transom light at north
end of building's east wall is presently used as main public
entrance.
All window openings are round arched with brick caps and stone
sills. All windows have double-hung four over four light sash
framed in wood.
One old view of the building shows a large peaked tower over
the major part of the south third of the building. (T. Berry
Smith and Pearl Sins Gehrig, History of Chariton and Howard
Counties, Topeka, Indianapolis!Historical Publishing Co.,
1923, p. 3lu ) Tower was removed at unknown date.
Library interior has original walnut bookcases, desks and chairs
in the reading room.
Vihen constructed (1866) the first floor was used as a lecture
hall by Lewis College (1867-1869) and the library was on the
second floor. At present, both floors are used as a public
library.
Building was formerly surrounded by a cast iron fence on a
stone wall base. This fence survives intact on the building's
front side (south). Only a few sections of iron remain standing
on the building's east side, none on north or west. Stone wall
base still surrounds the building.
The building is presently well maintained and preserved in
excellent condition.

The primary significance of the Lewis Library derives both from
its initial and continuous use as a library building, 1866 to
present, and from its architectural form, which is a splendid
example of the Italianate style in Missouri.
The building was designed by architect John Aldridge. (John A.
Bryan, Missouri's Contribution to American Architecture, St. Louis,
Wo.: St. Louis Architectural Club, 1928," P« 53.)
This library is also the oldest Missouri library in continuous
use.
Colonel Benjanin W. Lewis, a prosperous tobacco merchant, be
queathed "10,000 for its establishment. By virtue of this
endowment, the building is an outward expression of the prosperity
of the Missouri River port city of Glasgow, during the steamboat
era, ca. 181.0-1890.
Benjamin W. Lewis came to Missouri in 1831 and began working in
a tobacco factory in Glasgow. By the time -of the Civil War, Lewis
and his brother, James, were partners operating their own tobacco
business. They employed more than £00 workers and shipped I,,000,000
pounds of tobacco annually, sending large quantities to Europe.
("Glasgow's 75-Tear-Old Lewis Library was Built with Tobacco
Profits", Fayette, Democrat-Leader, January 9, 191,2.)
When the Confederate Army captured Glasgow in 1861,, Benjamin
Lewis, a Union sympathizer, was taken prisoner and beaten severely.
A ransom was paid for his release but the injuries he suffered
caused his death two years later. (Missouri Historical Review,
Vol. 14,, pp. 1,30-1,31.)
In his will, Benjamin Lewis left $10,000 for a public library to
be managed by a board of trustees appointed by the Methodist
Episcopal Church. The library vras built in 1866 at a cost of
§26,000. In 1867, the Lewis College and Library Association was
organized to manage the library and newly formed college. Between
186? and 1869 the first floor of the Lewis Library was used as

a lecture room for the college's 11(0 students. The college
moved to a different location when the library building be
came too srall to house both library and lecture room. The
lecture hall was also used regularly for community lectures,
a nineteenth century communication medium that lost its
prominence with the advent of radio and television. (Kenneth
Westhues, The Dream of Thirteen fen, Glasgow, The History
of Glasgow, Founding to Present. Glasgow: The Glasgow Lions
Club, 1966, pp. 52-514.)
