The major thrust of this year’s auction will support thecompletion of the upgrades to the Just For Kids Playground atCommunity Park with funds also supporting new fire hoses forthe Linneus Fire Department and the Backpacks For Kidsprogram.

Other projects to be supported this year are: Dollars for Scholars(SAD 29, SAD 70, SACHS, SAD 14, GHCA), Cary Library,Salvation Army, Student Recognition Day, Dominican WaterProject and Rotary Youth Exchange. In addition, the auction willsupport the Boy and the Boot Foundation of the Houlton RegionalHealth Services Foundation. We also support Rotary InternationalProjects.

Jack Ketch - A Rotarian and FriendThis year's Houlton Rotary Radio & TV Auction is dedicated to the memory of Floyd

"Jack" Ketch who passed away June 8, 2014 at the age of 78.Jack was a Rotarian for approximately 50 years. He served as President from 1967-

1968 and was recognized in 1989 as a Paul Harris Fellow - the highest honor a club canbestow on a member. Jack was made an Honorary Member in 2009.

Jack was always an active member of the club from faithfully attending meetings toparticipating in Rotary events and projects. Many in the community, as well asRotarians, will remember Jack as a sought after DJ for Rotary Radio Day, working in theRotary food booth at community events, seeing the familiar Sherwin Williams van at theend of the Canoe Race, even making holiday visits in a red suit to the homes of excitedchildren who had won their visits on the annual auction (he was one of the jolliest!). Healso made a memorable appearance as the head cheerleader at a Donkey BasketballRotary fundraiser that had the crowd in stitches!

His participation in the annual Rotary Auction is practically legendary. He wasknown for years for his phone pranks on new Rotarians ... and, sometimes those whowere not so new. He was a friendly voice on the phones for years and always entertainedas an auctioneer with his good friend and fellow Rotarian Walt Burlock. He would gothe extra mile to bring in some additional money for the club by singing silly songs fordonations and one year agreeing to shave his head if enough money was pledged ...

which it was thanks to his co-worker Chris Putnam & Albert Fitzpatrick. He did whatever was needed, including "pegging& sorting", soliciting items, assisting with supplement advertising, helping at "card parties" and selling raffle tickets (alwayswith a packet of tickets in his shirt pocket).

In recent years, while not able to be at the auction, he continued to to be a part of the event and to support the club. Jackwas a regular bidder. He especially enjoyed the homemade goodies ... most noteably Bob Blanchette's peanut butter fudge, Molly Bailey's bread and Sandy Cummingschocolate chip cookies.

Jack embodied the Rotary motto of "Service Above Self" through his dedication to the Houlton Rotary Club and also to the community as a whole. He gave his serv-ice to numerous organizations and causes in the area, often in leadership roles, including Houlton Regional Hospital, Madigan Memorial Hospital, Aroostook GeneralHospital, Greater Houlton Chamber of Commerce and Retail Trade Board, Masonic Lodge, Salvation Army, County Crimestoppers, Houlton Federal Credit Union, Lion'sClub and served on the Town's Board of Budget Review and as a Town Councilor.

Although Jack was not originally from Houlton, having been born in Bath, New Brunswick and graduating from Presque Isle High School, he loved Houlton and con-sidered it his home. Houlton is where Jack met & married the love of his life, Georgia and raised his daughter's Ginny & Nancy. Jack also had three grandchildren, Ben,Leah & Noah.

This year's auction may be just a little less fun without Jack's involvement, but we hope his Rotary spirit will touch everyone and make for a successful event. Weexpect he'll be watching!
