He was a successful music circus and Broadway producer in the 1920s and ‘30s before his time in Hollywood. The two wrote and produced Good News! in 1927. Other productions of theirs include The New Moon (1928) and Follow Thru (1929).

Scandals (one edition of which featured a young Alice Faye in the chorus), Manhattan Mary, Hold Everything, Follow Thru, and Flying High. They also wrote the scores for the films The Singing Fool and Sunny Side Up. Sixteen years after the song “Together” was introduced in 1928, it became one of the ten biggest hits of the year in 1944. During the fifties, a movie biography of DeSylva, Brown, and Henderson was made, called The Best Things in Life Are Free” with Gordon MacRae, Dan Dailey, and Ernest Borgnine playing the gentlemen in question.

Goodspeed Musicals is renowned for identifying and reinterpreting musical theatre gems so that their brilliance can be revealed to a contemporary audience. But not every musical involves characters that shine intellectually. In fact, the fifth longest-running show of the 1920s, Good News!, was about students putting football before astronomy, engaging in immodest behavior rather than thought, and neglecting their studies to dance the “Varsity Drag.” College attendance reached a high mark in the 1920s while the stock market was still booming and Good News! appealed to a wide audience thanks to the rah-rah atmosphere of the decade’s collegiate craze.

During this era, musical comedies often attracted higher attendance by contracting well-known bands to play in the orchestra pit, and Good News! was no exception. The show began with George Olson’s popular jazz orchestra shouting school cheers to rile up the audience before the overture. Good News! embraced many of the artistic and societal fads of the time, helping it become a stand-out hit during the most prolific decade in Broadway history. In fact, many consider Good News! the quintessential show of the “era of wonderful nonsense,” as it accurately portrayed the hedonistic innocence, good-natured hijinks, and youth culture of the age.

Arguably, no song writing team could capture the spirit of the decade like B.G. DeSylva, Lew Brown, and Ray Henderson. In fact, the song “Varsity Drag” became the dance craze of the year, and dance bands throughout the nation were regularly playing “Just Imagine,” “Lucky in Love,” and “The Best Things in Life Are Free.” and the title song. Good News! was so successful that it led the way for a series of similarly lighthearted musical comedies penned by DeSylva, Brown, and Henderson, involving boxing in Hold Everything, golf in Follow Thru, and aviation as the theme in Flying High.

Before writing the music and lyrics for Good News!, DeSylva, Brown, and Henderson’s careers both paralleled and were influenced by George Gershwin. Like Gershwin, they gained notoriety by composing songs for Tin Pan Alley and a series of revues entitled George White’s Scandals.

Gershwin left the Scandals in 1924 to work on the book musical Lady, Be Good, and White needed a song writing team to replace him. White hired DeSylva, Brown, and Henderson to pen songs for his Scandals of 1925, which provided them their first opportunity to work as a unified writing team. In 1927, when George White decided not to produce the Scandals, this gave DeSylva, Brown, and Henderson the opportunity to compose music for their first major book musical, Good News!. Undeniably, Gershwin, DeSylva, Brown, and Henderson were instrumental in shifting the focus away from the ubiquitous 1920s revue to the development of the book musical.

Good News! opened at Chanin’s 46th Street Theatre (now the Richard Rodgers Theatre) on September 6, 1927 and ran for 557 performances. It became the theatre’s largest hit to that date and was produced the following year in London. Later, MGM made Hollywood film versions of Good News! in 1930 and 1947. Goodspeed Musicals opened its 10th anniversary season with Good News! in June of 1972 to rave reviews. In 1973, Producer Harry Rigby chose Good News! to follow his successes reviving other popular period shows such as No, No, Nanette and Irene. The show toured profitably for two years before closing on Broadway in January of 1975. In 1993, the Music Theatre of Wichita premiered a new version of the show and an acclaimed cast album was released.

Who would have thought fifty years ago that this tiny theatre in a small town along the Connecticut River would have achieved such success?

Did they dare to dream that 19 musicals from the Goodspeed Opera House would go on to Broadway, that the theatre would be the first in the nation to win two special Tony Awards, that thousands of young people would train to become the finest artists and theatrical professionals in America, that Broadway’s best and brightest actors and designers would call this place home? Yes, they did have such dreams.

Our founding artists, civic leaders, and members dreamed an “impossible dream,” and today Goodspeed Musicals is known around the world for its spectacular productions, its name synonymous with excellence in musical theatre.

OUr PASTGoodspeed’s beginnings date back to 1963 when we opened our doors as a professional musical theatre. Under the direction of Michael Price since 1968, Goodspeed has exported 19 productions to Broadway—most famously Annie, Man of La Mancha, and Shenandoah—and produced 65 world premieres. Goodspeed stands as the first regional theatre in America to earn two special Tony Awards, one in 1980 for outstanding contributions to the American musical and a second in 1995 for distinguished achievement for a regional theatre.

OUr PrESENTGoodspeed mounts six new and newly-worked musicals a year—three at the Goodspeed Opera House and three at The Norma Terris Theatre—a total of more than 400 performances during the April to December season. It stands at the forefront of producing and preserving the American musical, simultaneously reinventing the classics and inventing new ones. It attracts well-known icons of the theatre world and fosters emerging talent among composers, lyricists, and librettists. Each year, thousands of actors, directors, choreographers, and technicians aspire to come to Goodspeed to practice their craft. Among millions who know and love this art form—and those who appreciate its history and enduring appeal—Goodspeed is widely recognized as the “home of the American musical.”

In addition, Goodspeed contributes to the preservation of the art form through its Scherer Library of Musical Theatre, the second most extensive musical theatre research library in the United States. Throughout the year, and intensively during the months of winter, Goodspeed addresses issues unique to the field by offering innovative and highly sought-after programs through its Max Showalter Center for Education in Musical Theatre. The Festival of New Artists features students from The Hartt School and The Boston Conservatory performing staged readings of three brand new musicals, six industry-related seminars, a symposium, and two cabarets. The Showalter Center also encompasses Goodspeed’s growing Musical Theatre Institute and programs for underserved children and teens.

The Goodspeed Opera House has endured as a majestic presence on the Connecticut River since it was built in 1876 by William H. Goodspeed, a shipping and banking magnate and avid theatre lover. Since that time the Opera House has lived two lives: the first as a bustling center of commerce, housing a theatre, professional offices, steamboat passenger terminal, and a general store; and the second, after a period of neglect and deterioration, as a magnificent professional musical theatre fully restored in 1963 to its original splendor.

Goodspeed’s history goes back to its opening night on October 24, 1877, when a repertory group presented the comedy Charles II and the farces Box and Cox and Turn Him Out. Featured performers of the day were brought to East Haddam by steamboat, many directly from theatre in New York.

After William Goodspeed’s death, the theatre was eventually sold and used as a storage depot for the State Highway Department. The building was marked for demolition in 1958, but local preservationists became interested and in 1959 The Goodspeed Opera House Foundation was organized to restore and reactivate the theatre. With the cooperation of the State of Connecticut and the support of donor-members, the Goodspeed Opera House was restored and rededicated on June 18, 1963, with the opening of the musical Oh Lady! Lady!!

Goodspeed Guild:The Goodspeed Guild is a volunteer organization dedicated to supporting Goodspeed Musicals’ operations and productions. Since 1975 it has provided services to artists, patrons, and staff on a year-round basis, while offering its members the opportunity to become part of the behind-the-scenes activities at Goodspeed.
