CISV Jacksonville September 2006 President’s Letter We are off to a great start to our 2006-2007 year. The Adult and Junior Branch Boards participated in a joint retreat in August to reflect on the past year's programs and activities and to plan for the coming year. As you can see from the contents of this newsletter, our Faces of Jacksonville and Peaceful Song Village this sum- mer were a tremendous success. It is so exciting to see the positive impact of CISV programs on our youth--see what they have to say about their experiences this summer on pages 8 and 9 of this newsletter. In honor of our 30th anniversary in Jacksonville we will present the first CISV Peace Builder Award at a luncheon on October 12 at the Wyndham Jacksonville Riverwalk. We hope you will be able to join us. We are pleased to sponsor what we hope will be an official CISV Mosaic program in conjunction with the Peace Builder Award luncheon: Mr. Kimmie Weeks will be with us for three days, speaking at the luncheon and to various community groups and ending his visit with a day long workshop with our Junior Branch on October 14. Isn't it amazing what we are able to do as a dedicated and committed group of volunteers? In CISV, Val Chritton, President, CISV Jacksonville Kimmie Weeks has worked to alleviate poverty and human suffering in Af- rica and around the world since he was fourteen. At the young age of nine, he came face to face with civil war, human suffering, and death. At age eleven, he committed himself to creat- ing a better world for children. Ever since, his life has been a journey toward fulfilling this commitment. Over the years, Weeks has formed partnerships and led organizations that have provided education to thousands of students in West Africa, lobbied the disarmament of child soldiers and pro- vided health care and recreation supplies to children. Hello every-

In this past year, ourJunior B

(NY

). Also, our JB

board updated our by-laws

and started succession plan-ning that w

ill make the tran-

This new year has al-

And to follow

are many

more exciting activities

planned by the new JB

Board, including the eventssurrounding the 30th yearcelebration of the Jackson-ville Chapter.

With another year

our high school graduates

and JB legends go on to col-lege. O

You know how

over the course of your life you collect “thebest days ever?” I had m

y best day ever in July this summ

er. Ifyou w

ere to ask me w

hich day in July, I’d probably laugh. My

whole m

onth of July was an am

azing experience. I had a girlfrom

Slovenia come to stay w

ith me, as did seven other kids

from Jacksonville. In A

pril, as soon as I got the matching form

for my partner, I started counting dow

n the days until she ar-rived. W

e emailed every day, regardless of the seven-hour tim

edifference. In M

ay I felt like I had known this girl forever. In

June I had ants in my pants. W

hen July finally rolled around, itdidn’t stop—

it just kept rolling on by. Even though July was the

most fabulous m

onth of my life, it felt like three days. That’s

because time really does fly w

hen you’re having fun, and in thiscase, this w

as the most fun I’d ever had.

My trip to Luxem

bourg was one that I w

ill never forget. The experi-ences I had there and the friends I m

ade will stay w

ith me forever. I learned

so much from

the people I lived with and it w

as fascinating to become

educated about so many different cultures. The political discussions w

ehad changed m

y perspective on many issues and I now

read the newspa-

per with real interest about w

orld events. My best friends w

ere from Sw
