READING FROM THE EPISTLES Rev. Elizabeth B. Johnson

One: Come to the scripture and rejoice in the glory of God. All: Hearing these words God’s glory rests on us.

Ephesians 1:15-23

I have heard of your faith in the Lord Jesus and your love toward all the saints, and for this reason I do not cease to give thanks for you as I remember you in my prayers. I pray that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give you a spirit of wisdom and revelation as you come to know him, so that, with the eyes of your heart enlightened, you may know what is the hope to which he has called you, what are the riches of his glorious inheritance among the saints, and what is the immeasurable greatness of his power for us who believe, according to the working of his great power.

God put this power to work in Christ when he raised him from the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly places, far above all rule and authority and power and dominion, and above every name that is named, not only in this age but also in the age to come. And he has put all things under his feet and has made him the head over all things for the church, which is his body, the fullness of him who fills all in all.

RESPONSE

One: These words are a guide for our lives. All: And a blessing on the journey.

*HYMN OF DEVOTION “Blessed Assurance” ASSURANCE

READING FROM THE ACTS OF THE APOSTLES Rev. Dr. Anna V. Copeland

One: Hear the account of Jesus, who has ascended to God’s presence. All: We join with his disciples to tell of his power and love.

Acts 1:1-11

In the first book, Theophilus, I wrote about all that Jesus did and taught from the beginning until the day when he was taken up to heaven, after giving instructions through the Holy Spirit to the apostles whom he had chosen. After his suffering he presented himself alive to them by many convincing proofs, appearing to them during forty days and speaking about the kingdom of God.

While staying with them, he ordered them not to leave Jerusalem, but to wait there for the promise of the Father. "This," he said, "is what you have heard from me; for John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now." So when they had come together, they asked him, "Lord, is this the time when you will restore the kingdom to Israel?" He replied, "It is not for you to know the times or periods that the Father has set by his own authority. But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth."

When he had said this, as they were watching, he was lifted up, and a cloud took him out of their sight. While he was going and they were gazing up toward heaven, suddenly two men in white robes stood by them. They said, "Men of Galilee, why do you stand looking up toward heaven? This Jesus, who has been taken up from you into heaven, will come in the same way as you saw him go into heaven."

RESPONSE One: We turn our gaze from heaven to the world around us. All: The Holy Spirit empowers us to carry on the ministry of Christ.

SERMON “What’s up? Jesus is!” Rev. David W. Johnson

“…as they were watching, he was lifted up, and a cloud took him out of their sight.” Acts 1:9b

SOLO “O Clap Your Hands!” Nancy Freer, soprano Don McAfee

O clap your hands, all ye peoples; shout unto God with the voice of triumph.

God is gone up with a shout, the Lord with the sound of a trumpet. Sing praises to God, Sing praises to God, Sing praises to God, Sing praises to our King.

Sing ye praises, Sing ye praises, Sing ye praises!

For God is King of all the earth; Sing ye praises with understanding.

God ruleth over the earth; God sitteth upon the throne of his holiness. Praise ye the Lord!

O clap your hands, all ye peoples;

Shout unto God with the voice of triumph. Praise ye the Lord! Clap your hands! Clap your hands!

THE GREAT THANKSGIVING

CALL TO OFFERING Rev. Dr. Anna V. Copeland

When we connect through zoom calls, sing in our homes, and laugh on our phones, we offer joyful noises to God. When we open hearts as we reach out to the lonely, write a note to the distressed, and deliver food to our neighbors, we offer loving actions on God’s behalf. When we open our hands as we wave a greeting, help one another, and share our gifts, we offer a generous response to God’s bounty.

UNISON OFFERTORY PRAYER Lester Coker

We do praise you, God, grateful for the blessings that flow and for our opportunity to return these gifts. Make us a well of blessing, a spring of hope and a river of tenderness for all your children, those gathered as this church and those who are in need. Amen

OFFERTORY “O Divine Redeemer” Nancy Freer, soprano Charles Gounod

CALL TO PRAYER Rev. David W. Johnson One: God be with you. All: And with your spirit. One: Let us pray. O God open our hearts All: For we trust you with our deepest need. One: God knows our weeping and joy All: And walks with us in risen hope.

MUSICAL MOMENT “All Is Well” Josh Pinnock, baritone arr. Mark Hayes

When peace like a river attendeth my way, and sorrows like sea billows roll,

Whatever my lot, God has taught me to say, It is well, it is well with my soul.

It is well with my soul. It is well, it is well with my soul.

All is well, all is well,

All is well with my soul. All is well, all is well, all is well with my soul.

PRAYER OF THE PEOPLE AND THE LORD’S PRAYER

Our Father which art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name.

Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth, as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread,

And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors,

And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil,

For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen

SENIOR MINISTER SEARCH COMMITTEE CONGREGATIONAL UPDATE MAY, 2020

As you know, our search committee has been at work for over a year to find the next Senior Minister God has planned to lead our church. We want to share with you an update from our committee in these unexpected and challenging times.

First, we want to assure you the committee continues with our work. We meet often to discuss candidates we are reviewing. But there is a slowing impact from the pandemic. Of course, like everything else, our meetings are now online through teleconference and Zoom. Each of our committee members attends from his or her own home or office. We have adjusted well - attendance has been great - and the discussions frank and lively.

YouTube and the internet have been great tools for us through this whole process because many churches publish video records of sermons and services. Through these, we can assess preaching by candidates and the flow of their Sunday services.

But of course, as important as preaching is, we are also looking at other things: can a prospective candidate continue to unite us, along a broad middle ground – in the belief that “there is more that binds us together than separates us in the worship of God?” And does he or she have the experience and relatability to serve the diverse identity of Community Church, with our variety of religious traditions, political viewpoints, and wide-ranging life experiences? Finally, but no less important, we evaluate candidates on their leadership experience in a large church with an equally large staff and a complex budget, such as we have at Community Church.

Our committee has talked to many candidates and met with some but we continue to wait for “THE ONE” whom God has planned to lead us.

Our committee is heartened by the welcoming reception our congregation has given to our Interim Senior Minister, the Rev. Dr. Anna Copeland and her husband Ellis. We are grateful for the experience she brings to help us weather both these unusual times, and the transition to our next Senior Minister.

Please continue to pray for us and for our candidates, that we may be moved by God to feel the Holy Spirit leading us to a mutual decision, in God’s own time.

Thank you.

Dave Sams Chair of the Senior Minister Search Committee
