Purpose 1.1. The Wikwemikong Board of Education (WBE) recognizes the value of play in the healthy development of children. Independent and cooperative play helps to foster social, creative, emotional and physical development. The WBE is committed to ensuring that all students have access to their fair share of facilities and equipment. 1.2. The Wikwemikong Board of Education will approve the construction and ensure the maintenance of safe playground structures and sports fields for use by its students. 2. Guidelines 2.1. All new playgrounds shall meet the most recent requirements of the Canadian Standards Association (CSA). 2.2. Existing playgrounds shall be modified to meet the most recent requirements of the CSA. 2.3. Trained personnel, using the standards defined by the CSA and the manufacturer, shall do installation of new playgrounds. 2.4. School grounds and playgrounds will be inspected daily prior to the arrival of pupils by a staff member designated by the school principal. These visual inspections will identify vandalism, safety, and/or maintenance issues.

1. Purpose

2.5. Issues of an urgent matter will be brought immediately to the attention of the principal and the maintenance supervisor.

2.6. Playground equipment that is in need of repair will be closed to students until such repairs are completed.

2.7. If the nature of such repairs is deemed prohibitively expensive, the playground equipment will be removed under the direction of the maintenance supervisor.

2.8. The principal or designate shall ensure that staff and students are instructed in the safe use of all playground equipment at the start of each school year.

2.9. Yard supervisors and other staff on yard duty shall enforce the expectations for behaviour on playground equipment.
