Adapting 2301A SpeedControls for Torque
Converter UseINDUSTRIAL APPLICATIONS
May be used whenever the driven load’sspeed must be constant, and the load iscoupled to the prime mover through a torqueconverter.
Typical applications of this technology maybe found in dragline operations as well ascar body or rock crushers.
FEATURES
Woodward has designed a version of ourproven 2301A Speed Control for use withdiesel engines coupled to loads throughtorque converters. To handle the torqueconverter operation, you’ll need two 2301ASpeed Controls, two magnetic pickups, andan EG-type hydroelectric actuator.
The two 2301A Speed Controls useseparate magnetic pickups, one measuringthe engine speed at the flywheel and theother measuring the tailshaft output speed.Together they can hold a load driventhrough the torque converter at constantspeed.
Although the two units are separate, theyare electrically connected in series, and theunit requesting the lowest level of fuel willcontrol the speed of the engine. As a result, you can maintain constant tailshaft speedunder load while the engine is protectedfrom excess speeds that could beencountered under extreme load conditions.
Typically, the engine governor is set to limitthe maximum allowable engine speed whilethe tailshaft governor is set at and regulatesthe desired output speed. An optional circuit
provides a minimum actuator currentadjustment that allows the engine tocontinue running when the tailshaft speedexceeds the speed setpoint for too long. This condition can exist when the tailshaftis connected to a load with highmomentum. The circuit is adjustablethrough the 1 k( potentiometer for aminimum actuator signal to allow theengine to idle.
