Lipinski Announces $500,000 USDA Grant for IIT in Bedford Park to Research Health Benefits of Superfoods Congressman Dan Lipinski (IL-3) today announced that researchers at the Illinois Institute of Technology in Bedford Park have received $500,000 from the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA) to research how bioactive components in berries may prevent inflam- mation and promote intestinal health. IIT was one of 20 recipients who received the grant through NIFA’s Agriculture and Food Research Initiative, the agency’s flagship competitive grants program that supports improving access to high- quality, nourishing foods that lead to better health. The project will investigate how berry components will impact low-grade inflammation in obese and overweight individuals. Researchers also want to see how berries can control the microbial community in the colon and how that could influence biological processes in the body. “This is very exciting work,” said Lipinski, a long-time supporter of nutrition and food research. “I joined my colleagues in asking for continued funding for the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative to ensure that we continuously im- prove nutrition. I look forward to seeing the outcome, but in the meantime, I might add a few extra berries to my breakfast.” Amandeep Sandhu, an Illinois Tech assistant professor of Food Science and Nutrition and researcher at the university’s Institute for Food Safety and Health (IFSH), is the principal investigator of USDA/NIFA funded project. “We are taking a whole food approach to deliver bioactive components and monitoring for possible beneficial health effects, including mechanisms of their action in individuals who are at risk of developing chronic diseases,” Sandhu said. “We expect to generate novel data on berry polyphenol components, the role of the gut microbiome as a mediator of inflammation, and opportunities to enhance health benefits by inclusion of berries in the American diet.” Holy Cross Ladies Aid Basement Clearance Sale The ladies are holding an additional day for shop- ping at their annual Basement Sale on Saturday, July 20th, from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. in their church as- sembly hall located at 3116 S. Beauties In The Night

I sit in my yard on a calm summer night,

and gaze at the beauties that pleasure my sight.

The moon appears to be sitting on the branch of a tree, and stars far, far,

far in the distance seem to be

winking a welcome.

Oh how beautiful is the sky on a clear summer’s night.

Lightning bugs fly by, blinking as if to say Hi!

A spirit, calmed with

silence and cooled by a gentle breeze, is moved

by the night’s true beauties, and all

doubts are removed! -Ray Springer

A community landmark continues...as two fine firms come togetherThomas McInerney’s Sons Funeral Home is the oldest funeral home in Chicago, earning a reputation for courteous service to generations of families. Charles McInerney Siedlecki, the last McInerney Family funeral director is retiring and passing the torch to Robert Moynihan, owner of Central Chapel, 62nd & Central. McInerney’s and Central Chapel are now one firm. Central Chapel was founded on the premise that a neighborhood funeral home, serving one family at a time, serves families best.

Bob Moynihan has strong roots in our community. His dad, Jack Moynihan, grew up here and graduated from St. Gabe’s. His

stepfather, Ray Kennelly, grew up in Canaryville and was alieutenant in the Chicago Fire Department, mostly at Engine 39 Stock Yards and Engine 29 Bridgeport. Bob also worked with Peg and Tom McKeon for many years assisting them with their funerals.

Bob Moynihan brings the same commitment to distinctive and affordable service to McInerney’s that is the hallmark of his Central Avenue chapel, familiar to many area families that have relocated to the southwest side. Their funeral packages are among the most affordable and inclusive in the city.

Reduce Fatalities Caused by Electric Shock Drowning in

Pools and at Marinas  With summer in full swing, the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) and Electrical Safety Foundation International (ESFI) are joining forces to re-mind people about the potential electrical hazards in swimming pools, hot tubs and spas, on board boats and in the waters surrounding boats, marinas and launch ramps.  Electric shock drowning (ESD) can occur when faulty wiring sends an elec-trical current into the water, which passes through the body and causes paralysis, and ultimately results in drowning.  “Most consumers, including boat and pool owners and swimmers, are not aware of the risks of electric shock drowning,” said Lorraine Carli, NFPA’s vice president of Outreach and Advocacy. “By sharing our water safety resources, NFPA and ESFI hope to educate people so that they can safely enjoy summer water activities.”  ESFI and NFPA have pool and marina safety resources, including tip sheets and infographics, brochures, reference guides and checklists that cover safety devices, common ESD causes and prevention methods, response protocol, and marina electrical safety considerations. ESFI and NFPA also recommend the following tips for swimmers, pool and boat owners:  Tips for swimmers: Never swim near a marina, dock or boatyard, or near a boat while it’s run-ning. While in a pool, hot tub or spa, look out for underwater lights that are not working properly, flicker or work intermittently. If you feel a tingling sensation while in a pool, immediately stop swimming in your current direction. Try and swim in a direction where you had not felt the tingling. Exit the water as quickly as possible; avoid using metal ladders or rails. Touching metal may increase the risk of shock.  Tips for pool owners:  If you are putting in a new pool, hot tub or spa, be sure the wiring is per-formed by an electrician experienced in the special safety requirements for these types of installations. Have a qualified electrician periodically inspect and -where necessary-replace or upgrade the electrical devices or equipment that keep your pool, spa or hot tub electrically safe. Have the electrician show you how to turn off all power in case of an emergency. Make sure any overhead lines maintain the proper distance over a pool and other structures, such as a diving board. If you have any doubts, contact a qual-ified electrician or your local utility company to make sure power lines are a safe distance away.  Tips for boat owners: Avoid entering the water when launching or loading a boat. Docks or boats can leak electricity into the water causing water electrification. Each year, and after a major storm, have the boat’s electrical system inspected and upgraded by a qualified marine electrician to be sure it meets the required codes of your area, including the American Boat & Yacht Council (ABYC). Check with the marina owner who can also tell you if the marina’s electrical system has recently been inspected to meet the required codes of your area, in-cluding the National Electrical Code® (NEC).  Have ground fault circuit interrupters (GFCI) installed on the boat; use only portable GFCIs or shore power cords (including “Y” adapters) that are “UL-Marine Listed” when using electricity near water. Test GFCIs monthly.  “Many swimmers, boat and marina operators unknowingly place themselves in danger by swimming near electric-powered boats and docks,” said Brett Brenner, ESFI president. “As incidents of electric shock drowning continue to occur every year, we are collaborating with NFPA to emphasize the importance of regular electrical inspections of pools, boats, and docks performed by qual-ified electricians to help prevent these tragedies while out on the water.”  ESFI has additional spa tips and resources for marina operators on raising awareness of electric shock drowning, as well as steps for keeping marinas and boats safer for patrons.  For information and resources about electric shock drowning, please visit www.nfpa.org/watersafety and the ESFI website.

Pets and the Hot Weather   As people brace for the hot weather that summer brings veterinarians urge pet owners to take precautions for their pets during the sweltering days ahead.  There are several simple steps to help prevent your pet from taking a trip to the emergency room:  • Avoid physical activity during the heat of the day; keep exercise to the cooler mornings and evenings.  • Ensure your pet has access to plenty of water throughout the day and during times of exercise.  • Spray your pet down with room temperature or cool water, but never ice water. Ice cold water causes a decrease in blood flow to the skin and heat can’t escape the body properly, which actually makes heat exhaustion symptoms worse.  • Make sure pets are kept inside of air-conditioned spaces to avoid excess exposure to heat.  • When walking or jogging with your pet, try to avoid asphalt as your pet’s paw pads can burn. Instead, stick to concrete, dirt or grass, as those surfaces are less hot.  • Never leave your pet in a car unattended, even with the air conditioning running. If the air conditioning fails, your pet could easily over-heat in as little as a few minutes.  • Don’t give sports drinks or electrolyte supplements to pets. Dogs cool off by panting and they do not sweat like people. Supplements like sports drinks can actually harm animals and make pets sick.  Most importantly, be familiar with your pet and know when they aren’t acting right. Lethargy, vomiting, diarrhea and dark red gums are all signs of heat re-lated distress. If your pet is panting uncontrollably or collapses, take the animal to your veterinarian or nearest emergency veterinary hospital immediately.

JOHN “GIMPY” SERRITELLA January 3, 1948 — June 20, 2019

Though he were dead, yet shall he live. My husband was a great man and he will be dearly missed.

It is with a heavy heart that the family announces the passing of John C. Serritella, Jr. Dedicated husband to Kathy (née Willis), devoted father to John III (Rheanna Casica) and Jamye Lyn. Beloved grand-father to John IV, Marissa Lyn, and Donald James. He was a cher-ished brother to the late Victor “Artie/Sonny” (Nancy), Victoria “Dolly” (Richard) Prochaska. Dear son of the late Katherine and John Serritella, Sr. Dear brother-in-law to Richard (Feli), Harry (Cynthia), the late William, Barbara, Vivian “Gail”, Frederick (Patricia), and David. Dear son-in-law to the late Marian and Harry Willis, Sr. Fond uncle to the Serritellas, the Willis’, the Kaminskis, the Bertuccis, the Cristianos.

As an honorable mention, I’d like to thank my daughter Jamye, my son John, my daughter-in-law Rheanna, and my grandchildren John IV, Marissa Lyn, and Donald James.

How do I find the words to explain how much I love all of you dear children? You have been the joy and love of your father’s and my life all our lives! I couldn’t be more proud of each of you. Your love, your support, your strength, your patience, helping me countless hours upon hours with your father. Jamye, you were the apple of your father’s eye. You are the excellence of quality! You have a gentleness and compassion for others, as well as the strength and beauty of many in your family. You are a woman of grace! John, you have always been the pride and joy of your father and I. You have the strength of your father’s commitment to his family. You have his strong work ethic, you have his backbone, his smarts, and you have his sense of humor. You are a true Serritella! You are the man of our family now. Rheanna, how do I thank you enough for taking care of my son and my grandsons? You are a loyal and loving daughter-in-law. You have the spirit of a champion! You have the code of honor, you en-lighten and brighten our lives. To my three grandchildren, John IV, Marissa Lyn, and Donald James, you are the heart and soul of me. You are perfection in my eyes. I am wrapped in pride and joy. You will always be first and a true blessing from above.

Special mentions to six of the greatest guys we know: Chuck Marino, Leo Caruso, Carmie Bertucci, Mickey Bertucci, Willy Dabrowski, and Frank Falco

Who faithfully went far above the call of a friend. Your acts of kindness and your countless hours of dedication spent helping my husband during his time in need cannot ever be repaid. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts!

First Lutheran Says Farewell to Pastor

First Lutheran Church of the Trinity is saying Far-well to Pastor Cheryl. The Reverend Doctor Cheryl Pero has served as interim pastor at First Trinity for the 10 months and has made quite an impact on the community in that time. Pastor Cheryl completed her Ph.D. in New Testament at LSTC in 2010 and became the first African American Lutheran woman to earn that degree. In 1980, she became the second African American woman ordained in the Lutheran Church in America (LCA). After briefly serving on the churchwide staff of the LCA, Rev. Pero served parishes in Chicago and worked in campus ministry for 12 years. She is recently retired from the The Al-bert “Pete” Pero Jr. Multicultural Center at LSTC.   During her time at First Trinity, Pastor Cheryl was known for reminding congregants that we belong to God. She has built relationships with many in our community, especially seniors and those experienc-ing homelessness. She will be greatly missed.   First Trinity will be celebrating Pastor Cheryl's time with us with worship followed by a potluck lunch on Sunday, June 30 at 10:30 am. First Trinity is located at 643 W 31st Street. All are welcome and you are invited.
