“Our rotating team of undergraduates has successfully designed and built two production-quality hybrid vehicles with a third under way. We’ve had access to GM’s Milford and Desert Proving Grounds as well as the EPA’s National Vehicle and Fuel Emissions Laboratory, where we have tested our vehicles. Our cars have been on display at the Peterson Museum, the Maryland Science Museum, and at GM’s world headquarters. We’ve transported senators, congressmen, representatives, and mayors. We’ve presented at ASEE in Pittsburgh, SAE in Detroit, FTF in Orlando, EDTA in Washington, D.C., and EVS in Monaco, Los Angeles, and in Norway. We’ve even been in Jay Leno’s garage.

“I’ve truly enjoyed sharing the rigor of the last seven years with some of the best undergraduate students in the world. Their intense efforts have not only rewarded them with an arsenal of technical skills but within an international framework that they will remember forever.”

–Zac Chambers, associate professor of mechanical engineering and EcoCAR faculty advisor

EcoCAR2*

EcoCAR2 International Design Competition Provides the Hands-On Practice

The Challenge: Design, build, and test a hybrid electric powertrain to decrease petroleum

consumption and emissions production while maintaining performance,

utility, and safety.

The Goal: To develop the next generation of engineers for the hybrid vehicle sector

who will help redefi ne the automobile.

Our Success:

• One of 15 North American schools selected to participate

• Increased weighted fuel effi ciency from 26 mpg to 62 mpg on highway

• EcoCAR2/Challenge X alumni are now working in the hybrid vehicle sector

“EcoCAR2 has been nothing short of a life-changing experience. Before going into this project, I hadn’t even considered a career in the automotive industry or considered myself a ‘car guy.’ After being exposed to the amazing technology and opportunities in vehicle development, I’m actively pursuing a future in the industry to work on advancing vehicular technology and meet the ever-changing demands of the market.

“The opportunity for a student to make important decisions is not often available in an undergraduate setting, but in the EcoCAR2 program it’s strongly encouraged. Seeing there are areas in which I’m capable of handling such responsibility has made me more confi dent in my overall abilities.”

–Jon Nibert, Computer Engineering student and EcoCAR2 team leader.

EcoCAR2 Awards and Recognition• Lyn St. James Women in Engineering Award four years in a row• NSF Outstanding Incoming Faculty Advisors• Model Based System Design – 1st place three times• Bosch Diversity Award

* EcoCAR2: Plugging Into the Future is an engineering competition sponsored by General Motors and the U.S. Department of Energy.

Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology has identifi ed Advanced Transportation as one of fi ve academic focus areas critical to the future of engineering, science, and mathematics.

Our ATS program consists of:

Education: Leading-edge curricular material developed in collaboration with program sponsors and supported by world-class laboratories provides under-graduate students with an unparalleled experience.

Practice: The full contact application of education through complex, interdisciplinary design competitions at the international level.

Scholarship: The professional dissemination of technologies, methodologies, and pedagogies discovered through the study and practice of advanced transportation.

EcoCAR2 team faculty advisors Zac Chambers and Marc Herniter mentor students throughout the design process.
