2.4 Public Information Team (PIT)2.4.1 Executive Summary

PITs role was to produce communication materials, interact with the public, anddesign a private view event that encouraged the project's primary target audience

and the core GM audience to participate in other project outputs, fulfilled the

requirements set by LOCOG for participation in SOTW, and informed academics and

professionals in the museum and heritage sectors about the project.

PIT conceptualized design ideas for the project postcard. In order to create thesedesigns they organized and directed a photo shoot of students and their homes. PIT

solicited designing help from an outside consultant.

PIT designed a postcard with the assistance of a Graphic Designer, Elizabeth Warry, and regular feedback from the GM staff. The postcard design was then submitted

and approved by LOCOG in accordance with the STOWprogramme within the

    Cultural Olympiad. (see appendix 2.4.2)

PIT attended regular meetings with their GM counterpart. PIT manned a stall during the February half term Family Days at the GM. The team

communicated information to visitors about the Student Homes Project. The team

also encouraged visitors to sign up and receive updated information about the

project through the GMs e-newsletter. PIT also invited visitors to attend the project-

run Family Days in April. The team's goal was to incite interest in visitors about the

project so that they would participate in project outputs in the future.

PIT wrote a case study for the Arts Council England chronicling the outputs, results, and student experiences of working on the Who Stole my Milk?: Exploring Student

Homes in London project. The Arts Council England case study provided an outlet for

more information to be disseminated to the wider museum sector audience about

the project. It also fulfilled a requirement of participation in the STOWprogramme.

    (see appendix 2.4.3)

PIT designed an invitation for the private view event with the assistance of aGraphic Designer that was distributed to the invitees. (see appendix 2.4.4)

The invitation design was approved by LOCOG in accordance with the STOWGuidelines.

PIT manned a stall at the Easter Holiday Family Days at the GM. The teamdistributed project postcards and provided information about the opening of the

exhibition and the web resources. The team's aim was to attract the GMs core

audience and the project's primary target audience to participate in the projectoutputs.

PIT assisted in writing questions, contacting participants, and recording interviewsat the GM for the UCL Communications documentary video chronicling student and

staff participation in the Who Stole my Milk?: Exploring Student Homes in London

    project. (see appendix 2.4.5)

PIT coordinated the planning and organization of the private view event held onMay 24th, 2012. PIT produced an event memo, refreshment brief, guest list, detailed

plan of the event, and floor plan. The private view event provided a time for the

project outputs to be on display for a select group of guests including UCL students,

UCL staff, GM staff, and student homes participants.

    APPENDIX 2.4.2 PIT POSTCARD

The postcard juxtaposes an image of the Regency Room at the GM with an image of a

typical student home. The purpose of this contrast is to engage both the GM's core audience

and the projects primary target audience (16-25 year olds). The text on the back of thepostcard also seeks to intrigue the visitor to tour the exhibition by explaining that the

conventional stereotypes of student homes will not be its only focus. The text gives thedates for the exhibition and uses a QR code to provide a link to the project blog. The

postcard serves as a way for project members to engage the potential audience as they can

    be easily distributed.

    APPENDIX 2.4.7 PIT REPORTAGE PHOTOGRAPHS

PIT organised a photo shoot with members of WRT, PMT, and university colleagues. The

visuals were used to create the postcard promoting the project and the private view event.

During the third panel meeting, PIT presents its private view event invitation design to the

UCL team members, GM staff, and MSI course coordinators.

PIT mans a stall, alongside Geffrye Youth Panel members, promoting the Student HomesProject as a whole, inviting GM visitors to the Family Days, to Global Homes opening

    evening, and the exhibition.
